Loved the entire process! I really enjoyed learning about how to process wild clay! I’ve heard that natives would burnish their pots and left them unfired. And people wonder why handmade pottery is pricey. And there’s no price tag for all the trials and errors along the way. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your creations, and all the learning along the way 🫶🥰. Scratches for Akela❤️

I'm so glad you decided to repair the broken pot. The Japanese art of Kintsugi uses lacquer mixed with gold, silver, or platinum to repair broken ceramic pieces. I've always been in love with those pieces, I think sometimes even more so than the pristine, unbroken pieces. Lots of hard work and lots of learning for you but what a lovely result.

Back in the 70's there was a gathering of the ceramics departments from several of the local colleges. It was called "The Full Moon Raku", and what an event it was. We met up in the Sand Dunes at Pescadero Beach for a weekend of Raku, Pit firing, etc. I still have a few of the pieces I fired at that event. Those are both beautiful pieces, and the experience is part of the beauty.

You won't make that mistake again unless you do it intentionally! Use horse hair on the pot in your firing to add another element. OH!! I loved doing this in highschool (whoa almost 40 yrs ago) After creating our piece and allowing it to dry, we surrounded it with newspaper and put it in a coffee can. Coffee can or any vessel large enough to hold it and allow air flow. After it was placed in the can, light the paper. Allow it to burn out and it leaves a beautiful pattern. Then fire it!

It is so fun to watch you throw and create beautiful art in the wild. When coning down try pushing the clay down and away from you. It uses the momentum and will cone down beautifully. & ignore me if you are already doing that, it's hard to tell from the angle of the camera lol You can add all sorts of crazy things for variations like dried animal scat. Dog, bird, moose, bear- a great way to add a special touch to your wild clay pieces.
@oculusangelicus8978Ай бұрын
I think that you and I, on a certain level are kindred spirits. I had a very hard life, and I am considerably older than you, likely three or so decades over than you, but I have as much passion about the things you are doing as you do. my life has been a battlefield of betrayal, disappointment, and failure, and after I developed an autoimmune disorder that forced me to undergo a liver transplant, I discovered Pottery. And my soul rejoiced. How could something so ancient, so traditional, so artistic and so primal have so much allure over me. I knew I was an artistic person, having been an oil painter when I was your age so long ago, but when I discovered pottery a ancient level artform caused my mind to bloom fields of wildflowers and angels sang for me. Saying I fell in love with it is an understatement of galactic proportions. I attended a class run by a potter of 40 years, who was an employee of A local pottery company that no longer exists but has a massive following of people who clamber over each other to collect old pieces of commercial pottery made long ago. So needless to say I valued his teaching immensely and then reality set in. I am old. I am also very poor, living on a disability income that barely affords me the opportunity to have enough of the basics in my life, and then there is the elephant in the room...I am Disabled and suffer heavily from a restricted range of motion and such poor health that the dream of ever becoming a potter who could make and sell their own works to the public is something that will NEVER happen. I even collected electrical components so I could build myself a pottery wheel that would make even the most well-established pottery drool with envy. with the kind of over-engineered pottery wheel I could build, I would be able to throw pots big enough to bury people in. But the reality is, I live in an apartment, have no capital to properly build a set up in a short enough of time that would make it worthwhile to even bother as my heath only continues to degrade, and the final arrow though my artistic heart, is that I have such limited skill in the artform that I doubt very much I could even get people to lok at my stuff let alone buy it. Why Am I telling you this? Because I see in you, the passion I had when I was young, and you stir those old feelings in me when I see where you have bought land, near the mountains, which is my most beloved place to be, out in the countryside where so much beauty abounds in almost everything you lay eyes on, and, you have your whole life ahead of you!!! You Are young, have talent and most importantly passion for Artistry like few others I see on KZbin. I want to tell you to grab hold onto your dream to be the best potter you can be, explore and learn and never stop learning. I can stand as an example of that, I learn as much as I can every day and I cannot get enough of it, so please focus on your dream, and make it happen! never let anyone stand in your way and let your loved ones be your pillars when you need them. make your name a powerhouse among artists in your chosen media and make it unique to you. I wish you all the best, all the success I wish I had had from a young age, and I will be silently watching your journey from my computer desk as long as you allow others to see in through your KZbin Videos! Perhaps even one day I might be able to but a piece from you and be able to cherish it for what remains of my life, and perhaps pass that on to my children, if they so desire to follow in my passions. thank you for being willing to share your path of discovery with us all, and I hope you can find all kinds of ways to express yourself through your art! Cheers, and may your future be bright with success.

Enjoyed yet another video of yours. Burnishing was done by the Greeks and anything they did, the Roman's would do. They used Terra sigillata for some of theit fine red (Terracotta clay) pottery with glossy surface. If you translate terra sigillata it simply means 'sealed earth'. They would apply as much as three layers of this and burnish it. Terra sigillata is basically the finest of the finest clay slip, and the sealing of the pot by burnishing is actually aligning all the clay particles flat. I'm looking at your wheel and don't notice a well. I was going to suggest wetting your pot as you throw it - wet it with slurry. It stops the pot becoming too wet and becoming weak. You can make your own well from wood and line it with lead or something you prefer. Love the whole concept of what you are doing. Burnishing can be started on the wheel, but as you dont like trimming on the wheel, you probably wouldn't enjoy it. You are a very creative person, working with what you have. A suggestion is that some cracked pots could be sculpted. Vases don't have to hold water. If it doesn't work, you still have clay to be reprocessed. I do prefer slow drying times like yourself, but when it's done commercially, you Also then need a lot of space. Some of your designs are very challenging for the clay to hold its shape- hence they collapse. I think we have all there. You can overcome this by using too much clay a trimming when leather hard, or throw in two pieces. Your office space probably makes most of us jealous in a good way. I like how in a sense, you are bringing back centuries old techniques. Some old potters would take clay from anywhere and they would literally take it from a trackway. Times were tough and potters couldn't afford to buy clay, so they dug holes in the road and stole it. The next day, wagons would be just about wrecked and the coachman would cursed the Potters and their potholes.

I am impressed with how you maintain a single minded focus of your end result image. Even though you are constantly adjusting through out the process. In the end there will be the results, and it will possess it's unique characteristics. They are not flaws, they are features. I was watching an Andy Ward's Ancient Pottery video where he was doing a pit firing. His pots cracked and I think actually exploded. He does a lot of his firing out in the desert around Phoenix, Arizona. He watched his video of the firing and decided that putting his pots on the bear ground around the fire to warm allowed them to absorb just enough moisture to damage his pots. So now he tries to set them on a rock or a pot shard. There is always more clay, I hope you will be able to sell some of your very unique pottery in the future, cheers.

🌷 Your pottery is absolutely gorgeous... I worked in that area for a little while in high school... We used to get free clay from the university... It would need to soak for a few days in big barrels... It was hard work but we were young and silly and yes, there were a few clay fights lol But truly, the design/shapes and the colors of your works are stunning. Congratulations! 👍
