Most cows on working ranches may only have human contact a couple times during a year so they get a bit of a wild nature out grazing in the pastures. But there are several reasons why a cow might need milking out in the pasture. A cow who has lost a calf will still produce milk which can lead to a bloated udder which causes her to feel a lot of pain so she needs to be milked to relieve it. In the best case, there may be a maverick in the herd who has lost its mother during a difficult birth but the calf has survived. There is a chance the cow who lost her calf might be tricked into accepting the maverick as her own if her milk is smeared on the head of the motherless calf. This puts her own scent on the orphan and she will be more likely to accept it. All-in-all, the cows are not real happy about being milked by hand and it will take several cowpokes to get the job done which can lead to some hilarious wrecks. #Rodeo #WRCA #WildCowMilking #RanchRodeo
This was the fourth event of the 24th annual World Championship Ranch Rodeo held at the Civic Center Complex in Amarillo, Texas. A total of four rodeos are held during the week to determine which ranch team will take the world championship back to the ranch with them.
In March of 1995, a group of people from across the western United States created the Working Ranch Cowboys Association. WRCA produces the World Championship Ranch Rodeo as a means to showcase the skills of the working ranch cowboy and to raise funds for the WRCA Foundation (WRCF).
For more information about the organization and the results of the rodeos during 2018 see their website at: wrca.org/
