This is so cool! And inspiring! Foraging is definitely so satisfying and one of the added bonuses of living on a boat and being in the wild :) I'm going to have to copy this recipe though as I haven't tried pickling kelp yet! Thanks for the great idea!

We’ve done a lot with kelp. We’ve made the following: sweet Pickled Kelp, Jalapeño Pickled kelp, kelp salsa, kelp relish, kombu. We will never go back to store bought relish or salsa. Kelp is very healthy for you!

This is great. At the Outpost, we didn't get much in the way of fresh vegetables so tried a few different seaweeds but not kelp. Would love to try it. I'm all for free food :)

Which seaweeds did you try? It’s hard to find info on which types are edible and for what! I would love to try some more!

Love this video! Thank you so much for sharing! I live on the central Oregon coast and forage for many things. I have harvested Bullwhip Kelp and tried to pickle the tube once and could not stand the overbearing flavor of iodine. I dehydrate the leaves for Kombu and I also turn them to powder for adding into soups for thickening and nutrition. I LOVE it in a good Miso soup! I have a close friend here who is an Alaskan Native and she says the best pickled kelp is good a little sweet and super spicy. She lost her recipe during a bad divorce, so she was unable to share it with me. I want to give it another go, however, I have searched EVERYWHERE on the Internet for a solid recipe, but have had no luck. Does anyone here have a SPICY pickled kelp recipe you would be willing to share?

I unfortunately don't have an exact recipe and didn't love these pickles right off the back, but after leaving them for a couple more months than usual their flavour really improved and i greatly enjoy them now. After trying other people's and comparing them to this recipe I can say that the pressure canning and that cooking process really helps to get rid of the iodine and fishy flavour.

@@WaywardLifeSailing Thanks for that tip! Makes sense to me as that texture is pretty heavy duty. Probably does take time to penetrate into the pickle. Very smart!
