Excellent video ... we were trying to identify whether we have wild onion or wild garlic (or wild camas/ leeks, etc.) in our yard. It is definitely wild garlic. Thank you!

That's a totally different plant than what we call wild garlic in the UK. I would call what you have chives.
@EatThePlanet
@EatThePlanet 3 жыл бұрын
yes. I believe your species of wild garlic is allium ursinum. We have a similar species to that here called ramps allium tricoccum. The species in the video is often called crow garlic, wild garlic or onion grass. Even though it looks like chives which grow like onions. The reason it's groups with the garlics more often than onions and chives is because the bulbs grow similar to garlic with cloves instead of just one single bulb like onions.

We got garlic from a yard that claimed to have a variety from early 1900’s. They come back every year . They don’t look like todays 🧄 garlic where it’s a head of many cloves. These are the size of golf balls and are individual and are shaped like globes

Mine has a garlic/onion smell.. have a little bulb growing on top. All my plant I'd says it's wild garlic. Mine are not hallow and come to a point on top. Is that garlic?

Do bulbs get bigger? I found ton today (leafs smell good-taste like strong oniony/garlic) but bulb doesn’t smell/tiny like kidney bean.
@EatThePlanet
@EatThePlanet 4 жыл бұрын
The bulbs for this species only get about as big as they are in this video. If what your finding has smaller bulbs it could be a different species or might just need another month or 2 to get full size.

How do they grow next year if you pull them out with the roots?(where can I get seeds for this plant
@EatThePlanet
@EatThePlanet Жыл бұрын
you would only harvest a few patches and make sure you leave enough to propagate on their own for the next year. These are very common in my area so I'm not too worried about harvesting some.

The wild garlic I found had shoots that were really tall….like over 2ft and had what looked like mini cloves at the top that were sprouting flowers. There was a single bulb, with single shoot, under ground that was east to pull up. What sort of variety am I looking at
@EatThePlanet
@EatThePlanet 3 жыл бұрын
It's actually the same species. That 'clove' at the top is called bulbils. It's basically genetic clones of the parent plant that act as seeds. I noticed that when the garlic is a single bulb underground vs a clump of bulbs it tends to create bulbils more often.

i had few tablespoons of old wild onion seed 2-3 years old they were all dead dry as a bone inside. instead fo throwing them in the garbage, just for fun i put them in a dish of water, and many of them are germinating now. Its almost july. What can i do to preserve and plant them so they can be productive, or did just plain mess them up? Maryland resident. Jay Dee

Your best bet is probably to put them in the ground at the end of august or in september when it starts getting cool again. this should allow them to go dormant over the winter and then continue their normal cycle in the spring. You don't happen to know what species it is do you?

@@EatThePlanet it doesnt have the floppy wild garlic leaves. narrow stalk about a an eight to a quarter inch wide. wild onion seed head must be wild onion. ok. so, they have tiny roots. Ill use container soil? peat pots?? or 2 inch plastic square pots? how deep should i put the rooted seedlings? the roots are about a milimeter long maybe. How far apart? how many seeds per hole?
@EatThePlanet

@@joelboardgamerpger5393 if they have tubular foliage then it could be this species allium vineale.

Yes! I’ve yet to find wild garlic. How common is it around here and where does it grow?
@EatThePlanet
@EatThePlanet 5 жыл бұрын
you're in MA right, According to plants.usda.gov it's pretty common there. Which makes sense because its very cold tolerant here in southern CT. I find it in yards and wooded edges, over the next few weeks is a good time to look for it. I always look for the bunches of dark green, once i know what I'm looking for they tend to stand out.

People use different common names but the important thing to know is that this is Allium vineale. wild garlic is an acceptable common name for this plant. Garlic and onions are in the same genus and many people interchange the common names of the wild varieties. In my opinion its fine that they do that because detailed discussion about which plant is being identified usually includes reference to the genus and species.
