Yes I am intending to do loads more in this series. Some plants will not be edible but they will have other uses and rich folklore surrounding them.

Excellent information. Here in the Appalachians we tend to call them Ramps. We also have garlic that grows wild. Looks just like the bulbs you buy in the market, only smaller. Also in the spring when the Ramps & garlic are fresh & abundant, the turkeys will eat them & there's definitely a strong garlic flavor to the meat if you eat spring turkeys.

Great video mate, hope to see more of these from you, i seem to find a lot of these kind of videos from channels in different countries, but not too many here in the uk so it's nice to see videos like this that may actually be of use rather than talking about a bunch of plants etc that we don't really see in this country.
@pondguru8 жыл бұрын
Yes that's what I thought too and although some channels from the UK do a great job of their plant videos the lore surrounding them is never brought into it yet that is often the most interesting part.

Great one Richard. A well put together video. That Allium Triquetrum plant was one of my first wild picks back in the day. I am sure they appears to ne more of it around now.

They are all over the place up here in the wooded stream valleys and I've got a few growing around my pond although they don't do very well as the ground isn't rich enough and there isn't enough shade.

Great part 2 of your new series Richard . I love onion and garlic mixed together . My favorite potato chip was that mix , but I can no longer find it . I hear that is how Chicago got it's name back in 1687 when Robert De La Salle wrote about trying to open a fur trading post here . The Native Americans of this area called it Shikaakwa , and La Salle borrowed from that . Calling the area (Chicagua) . For the Garlic , onions and Leeks that grew wild here around the Chicago River . Loved the Folk Lore about the Cross Roads as well . I'm not all that sure about that either though ...lol

Chicago is twinned with my local town - at least I joke that it is as Consett is right on a hill top and always windy, lol It is always interesting to hear how places got their name so thanks for that, man.

While I can't say that I practice Wiccan or any other system beliefs it is definitely interesting to learn more about the links to plants as that is the knowledge the Wiccans, Pagans and practitioners of the ancient beliefs have carried forward through history when certain other systems chose to suppress or destroy it.

great video Richard and I fully agree with your comment that information should be shared freely I wish other you tube channel were like you done are just out there to rip people off and beg for money lol
@pondguru8 жыл бұрын
Yes it is a tricky one and the norm now seems to be for channels to have a 'donate' button, even when they will be more than self supporting from advertising. That's just not for me and won't happen here. I have one friend on KZbin who has a donate button on their channel and I can see that is justified as his channel is not yet self-supporting and he goes on all sorts of varied adventures into the wilds on his own money. His videos are excellent and a full 180 degrees from the channels who are earning a tidy profit yet still want more for bashing out the same old videos week in week out. I'm just happy to get information out and if there is something entertaining in there its a bonus - even after all these years KZbin is still very much a hobby for me as I have a real job which pays the bills. Glad you enjoy the videos, man.

Can you get wild garlic with more bell like flowers (almost like a bluebell but white)? I've seen some that smell like garlic but the leaf more like the one you dug up towards the end,
@pondguru Жыл бұрын
Sounds like a white (albino) bluebell - you do get them occasionally and the than the leaf and flower they look similar to wild garlic at a glance. They also have a similar bulb but it doesn't taste of garlic and is non-edible.

The channel which is good is Andy's Fishing. He's in Australia and really goes out of his way to make great videos and interact with the viewers so is definitely worth checking out. I have been following his channel since it was first set up. As for the parasitic creature you're referring to I've no idea what he or his find faking associates are up to as I just absolutely ignore them. I tend to support a variety of smaller genuine channels who love the hobbies they are showing in their videos as their real enthusiasm is great to see and really refreshing to watch in a world of greedy, fame craving morons, lol.

@pondguru8 жыл бұрын
Native knowledge which has been passed down through the generations is more valuable than all the gold in the world and the problem we have in the UK is that much of that was lost during the witch purges back in history.

Hey bud, why is your wild garlic look nothing like the wild garlic that are being shown by other KZbinrs? I mean, most other wild garlics being shown have narrow stalks like the domesticated green onions we typically see at grocery stores. And they also have these clusters of small oval-shaped cloves that grow at the top of the onion stalks. But yours look nothing like the ones I mentioned. Check this video out to see the kind of wild onion I am talking about: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5PLfWucr7CNgq8
@pondguru5 жыл бұрын
The link you gave me is for a guy in the US so their garlic is simply a different type. Even in the UK we have a few different types but the one with big leaves and bold white flowers like the one shown here is by far the most common so videos from UK will typically show this type.

Why do you disable likes and dislikes?
@pondguru8 жыл бұрын
They still register but are not viewable on the videos. Its not that I get many dislikes (this video currently has 87 likes and 0 dislikes) but even when there are a couple of dislikes it brings about comments pointing the finger at individuals who think its funny to hit the dislike on every new video and that degenerates into a chain of stupid comments. I really appreciate the viewers I have as they are willing to be open to new hobbies and experiences so making the thumbs up / down stats private is one way to maintain that quality.
