To travel the last third of the journey sideways pointing into the wind must have been pretty scary and I was convinced it was going to hit the other hovercraft when it made the beach. Excellent seamanship and pretty marginal for travelling in those weather conditions.

I'm clapping to a job well done,the pilot did a brilliant job at manoeuvring the hovercraft across the sea in such awful conditions and made a great return at base.

Both seriously cool, and probably scary/not all that pleasant, but the crew did great. What a ride!

I was at the IOW last summer. Saw a hovercraft coming across, wind was so strong it stopped the hovercraft not far from the Ryde terminal, was sat there for a good few minutes with the fans at the back going mental. Finally got moving and got safely to Ryde, was very fun to watch nevertheless

Just wow! Despite having ridden hovercraft many times ever since the days of the SRN6, it's still a bit freaky to see them travel sideways

Does that thing have a front undercarriage? It looked like he used some such thing to complete that straightening manoeuvre.

Regularly, they struggle with high winds - as this video demonstrates!

More regularly than the old craft. These newer craft are larger but with a proportionally smaller skirt compared to the old ones and they struggle much more. I miss the leaky, noisy, old reliable craft.
@petergroves93434 жыл бұрын
They tried one more flight after this & then suspended the service as the wind gusts were in excess of 25knots. I have this cam on my TV most days, it's fascinating watch. I'd love to hear what pilots have to say when they're close to their limits like that

Soon after I moved to the Portsmouth area in 1969 a hovercraft overturned in rough seas with the loss of several lives.

I believe the deaths were caused when the rescuers cut a hole in the hull to access the occupants, this allowed water to flood the cabin drowning several of the passengers.

PLEASE DON'T OVER EGG THESE THINGS. Like an aircraft landing in strong cross winds, the pilot is in full control, these craft are very maneuverable. This was NOTHING SPECIAL in a strong easterly wind. Many people on the island were surprised and disappointed this even made news in their local newspaper. This may have been a slightly bumpy crossing but it's well within the crafts limit.
