At 4:44, when you asked what the best move for white was, my first instinct was pawn b3. I tried to play a few scenarios with it in my head and came up with this: What if at 5:00, instead of bishop d2, you went pawn b3, preventing the king from taking the knight and allowing bishop d2 the next turn, forcing black to lose their queen to stop checkmate? After pawn b3, black could defend with knight e4, but that just frees up your own queen to go f5 check, forcing their king to move b4. You could then take their knight on e4, allowing the aforementioned bishop d2. Of course the position has now changed so now black can play king a3 instead of sacrificing their queen, but if they do you play queen e3, threatening forced checkmate with pawn b4 discovered check followed by queen b3 checkmate. So they would have to give up their queen to prevent checkmate anyway. Regardless of when the queen capture happens, you will then take advantage of black's lack of developed pieces in this line in order to coordinate the rooks for a checkmate. I kinda just did this in my head and I’m still practising with the visualising of future moves so I’m sure I’m missing something, but I spent a good 45 minutes on it. Very unrealistic management of time, but right now I’m trying to practise actually seeing the moves rather than doing so quickly. Anyway if anyone could tell me if this is a solid plan or not I’d greatly appreciate it. I’m positive there’s something I’m missing, but I can’t see anything. (Edit: just put it on a chess board. black pawn b5 completely shuts this down. as does black knight a6. I knew I wasn't seeing something.)

In the expert terminology this is called a "Steel King", named not after the metal but after a player named Steel. The term was popularized by Dutch author Tim Krabbé in his Schaakkuriosa.

It's similar to the Legal's trap

Surprised a 2200 didn't know that Bg4 was a blunder, that's a very common trap
@christopherheckman79577 ай бұрын
Well, there were only 3 minutes in the game (which is why I don't consider 3-minute games real games). I'm more surprised at Bh5.

Black originally wanted to play the Scandinavian defense, and there this trap doesn't exist. Maybe that's why he didn't recognize this combination in this, for him unknown opening territory.

I cant believe a 2200 played so poorly. That's a common opening trap that he didnt see

There are a couple of board games which resembles what you said. Scotland Yard and Letters from White Chapel. One player is trying to run from the rest of the players. Those are great games if you are a board gamer.

1:04 personally, I like Ne5 first
@christopherheckman79577 ай бұрын
The problem with Ne5 is that Black can play Be6, and White can't win a pawn.

I would liked to see what would happen after black king moved to b6 , white bishop would have moved to e2 It would have allowed the queen to come back into play I think.
