Many of Tamora Pierce' books are written about strong female and/or children characters. Her books are classed as "juveniles" but are excellent reading, no matter what the readers' age.

Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite Young Adult authors! I am 32 now but I honestly still enjoy reading her strong female characters. One of my favorites of hers is Trickster’s Choice and the fallow up book, Tricksters Queen. This series is my second top favorite.

I meant to remember the musical soundtrack's performer name, Bruce Hogan(?), but am not sure I did but his performance was so riveting and transforms one to an earlier time. This is the first audiobook I've actually listened to all the way through. I've tried a few others but the narration on them was horrible, the voices the one person reading imagined for the characters sucked. Ms. Pierce is an excellent narration reader and the fact that The Full Cast Family is there reading the speaking parts of the characters is a huge plus. It was more like watching a play than listening to an audiobook for me. I made several crochet projects while listening to this.

Hey, I don't know if this is up your alley or if these are the sort you'd prefer to read in hand, but I've really enjoyed the audiobook of how to train your dragon (read by david tennant), Coraline, Wizard's first rule, and Eragon, all on yt. Also, I really enjoyed The Host by stephanie meyer (completely unrelated to twilight, and found on audible) Hope you have some luck finding ones you like, and have fun crocheting! ...just saw you posted this a long while ago, but anyway there u go
