According to Wiki - Tussilago farfara is coltsfoot. Tussilago means "cough suppressant" (as in Tussin syrup). Says that coltsfoot tea has caused some liver problems in infants. Usually that means Mom gave the tea way too often, or child had something like whooping cough to begin with IMHO (In my humble opinion). Got to go look for this in this area. Member of the Aster family by the way. Thank you.

The coltsfoot flower comes up early spring before the leaves come up.The white stuff is normal, part of the leaf structure. I've always dried my leaves whole on trays, turning them once or twice a day. I may try it with my new dehydrator, though it's best to keep the leaves whole until ready for use, but the leaves are too big! It's time for me to harvest too! One thing to warn ppl about too is that some plants interact with prescription meds (and herbs). Check contraindications! Very important.
@OurHalfAcreHomestead12 жыл бұрын
No need to dye them..BUT..if you are going to..make it fun..Green for herbs..read for meat..orange for veggies...lol

Amazing! I have this huge patch of Coltsfoot growing, for weeks now I wasn't sure what to do about it. It's a bit past early summer but I think I'll go for it. That Katzkradul is a smart cookie like you, I'm glad you shared her tip as I would have missed it.

I don't think so..because the bees only use the pollen..not the whole plant.

You are right! Almost every wild plant or weed has a dangerous cousin that looks so much like the benign version, you really have to be careful. Great video! Thanks for the sock tip!

@AnnCrumsMiniHomesteadNews10 жыл бұрын
I know you did this a couple of years ago, but still very helpful to me since I just watched it. Awhile back I used a sharpie and numbered my trays. So often, herbs all look the same when they're dry and maybe even the fragrance isn't strong enough to tell them apart. So, I write down the tray number and the herb name on paper. That way I know what they are when I remove them for packaging. :)

I will look for that book on Amazon, it has pictures lol which is good ID. I've used the red or white with good results for everything you said. One should get used to id-ing and using all the various herbs at hand. My herb "bible" (is that sacriligous? ) is "Back to Eden" by Jethro Kloss, circa 1974. the newer editions were edited by his daughter, don't give 1/2 as much. But no pictures to ID. Also, when I'm where I can get herbs, I hang them to dry. Thanks for sharing! Good info and how-to.

The white stuff on the plants looks to be something called Powdery Mildew that you an search on the net. If you spray it with diluted vinegar or baking soda it will kill it. I had a problem with it in my garden on my melon and zucchini plants.
