I thoroughly enjoyed this discussion and will plan on reading this book. The Cure is a special band to me. Up until recently, I did not realize I could get my Black Sabbath and The Cure from similar sources because I have friends who tend to like one and not the other. I don't think The Cure have ever released a bad album and it was fun to hear Martin champion The Top because so many people think it is their worst album from the classic period. I have a different take on Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. I agree that it is disorganized, but I see it as The Cure's answer to The White Album with all its different directions. I had the pleasure of seeing The Cure for the third time this summer. It's amazing that they still play 30ish songs each night with setlists that change constantly. I noticed that they played over 50 different songs on the recent tour. Robert Smith never dials it in. I'd enjoy seeing a Siouxsie and the Banshees tie in discussion since their orbit overlapped with The Cure thanks to Robert Smith playing with them, the bands touring together, and the collaboration between Smith and Steve Severin with The Glove. Both came from post punk origins, made gothic albums, and then headed in a more melodic direction. I view Pornography and Juju as sibling albums in a way, even though they each have their distinct sound.

For me the big difference between Robert Smith an almost anyone else from the alternative rock scene is that when he put his mind to it he could write a proper top 20 hit - and he did it over and over again from Boys Don’t Cry onwards.

Starting as “Junior High Metal Head” my friend gave me The Cure “ Head on the Door” and it along a with few other Alternative/post modern bands .. change my whole out look on music .. all the sudden Guitar Gods/ solos weren’t everything ..
