It seems some of you believed the white mushrooms appeared on 2:14 are angle wings. I was thinking the same but after learning that angle wings grow only on conifers, and those speicimens was found on a deciduous log, I think they are a type of oyster mushroom. Since I don't have any kidney or liver problem, I tasted some out of curiosity (and people with such problems should not risk consuming anything resembles angle wings) They indeed tasted a bit different from the common brown oyster (not as fishy as some) and were less meaty. I ate all mushrooms I marked edible on this channel and am continuing to explore more edibles. Most of the time I am 100% sure of what I eat, or, I make sure the lookalike are not poisonous to me, like in this case. That said, do not imitate me and use these videos as field guides, and I cannot be responsible for any possible consequence. Please note that there are always some potential risk involved even when the mushrooms are considered edible by all. Both my wife and I got diarrhea after consuming large quantity of Suillus Granulatus(picked on different spots and ate on separate days in different dishes). I didn't see many people discussing this specific reaction at all but that was what happened to us.

@DusanMijailovic995 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it is kinda confusing. Choice edible would be a mushroom that you would CHOOSE to eat before all other edibles. So choice edibles are the most prized mushrooms. And the difference between the good edible and just edible mushroom is relative, some people consider certain choice edibles to be average at best while they could consider a very unpopular edible mushroom to be very delicious.

Old Man of the Woods I actually did go ahead and watch several of your vids last night... Pretty impressive really. As I suspected, you are indeed knowledgeable on the subject. The videos I watched were fun... I loved the ones were you actively find mushrooms while filming, like in the blewitt vid I watched. In that video you imparted a lot of knowledge as well. They don't seem to scripted, which is a plus, the editing is good, not too flashy. And you're clearly a real nature lover. I'd happily watch many more of your videos. Thanks for the content! I'm counting the days myself... A month til we will start getting warmish winter days to scout the woods...maybe 2 more months til morels... CANT WAIT!

Old Man of the Woods where do you live? Its beautiful woods, lovely diversity! It makes me a bit green with envy. I have access to nice woods myself, but they're all small pockets of wood, not really very diverse, but I'm lucky to even found access to any decent woods at all! Central Kentucky is surprisingly sterile... Just a desert of grass... Very few homes for wild life and nothing more than tree lines in fences... Nothing resembling a true forest floor environment for miles... For that matter in lucky to have ever learned to forage at all around... I've yet to find anyone to even hunt morels with me... At my spots ... Much less some one that can actually teach me. Thank god for the internet... I'd have never learned a thing without it. Thanks for the vids and response.

@brianadams31893 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they all grow in Pennsylvania and I am sure they are in your area too. Make sure you learn everything you can about identifying the toxic mushrooms in your area(usually a much shorter list than all the edible ones) and try to start your collecting with hard to mis-identify species like chicken of the woods or hen of the woods. I would also recommend looking into local clubs, sometimes they have woods walks to teach people how to identify what is in a particular area. Also, please be mindful of private property. I simply ask permission if I see an area that looks interesting and I don't think I have been told no yet.

The advice for anyone who has not studied Mycology (at college level is the best) is DO NOT EAT WILD MUSHROOMS. If you have someone you know who has studied, and you believe you can trust him/her, AND you yourself watch them eat the mushrooms first, then that is the next best option. Have this person you trust check what you have before you consider eating it. "WHEN IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT" Think about it; is eating a wild mushroom that MAY be good, worth getting very sick, or dying for? REMEMBER, out of the ones you decide to eat, always save one - for the hospital. Any mushrooms of the Aminita group, be especially wary of. The Aminitas have species (Aminita Phalliodes "the death cap", Aminita Ocreata "the death angel") which have caused more deaths and liver transplants than should have happened. CHOICE? EDIBLE? Most wild mushrooms don't taste good enough to eat, frankly. The novelty of "eating wild mushrooms'" is not that novel. Collecting and identifying them is the most fun. The Chanterelles, Morels, Boletas Edulis, Agaricus Augustus, and other related to these are really the only one that are truly worth it. Study, study, study.

OMotW-I'm in Ct. and LOVE mushrooms! Sulphurs can be blanched, sauteed, fried or baked. You can replace Sulpher Shelf with chicken or tofu in ANY recipe....YUM!! They work good in curries or casseroles, risotto, rice recipes, or any egg dish! Try this recipe over any starch of your choice. 3 Cups Chicken of the woods, cleaned and chopped in bite sized pieces 3 TBSP Olive Oil 1 med onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 Cups tomato sauce 1/2 Cup dry white wine salt & pepper to taste Clean mushrooms with damp cloth, then either tear or chop them into small pieces. Warm oil over med. heat. Add onions & cook 3 to 5 mins. till starting to get translucent. Add garlic & cook another min. Add mushrooms and cook for 10 mins, stirring occasionally until mushrooms turn a vibrant orange. Pour in the white wine and cook for another 5 mins. Add the tomato sauce, salt & pepper, simmer all for another 10 to 15 minutes. Serve with, or over, starch of your choice. Change this recipe up, by taking out the tomato sauce, and replacing it with 1/2 to 3/4 cup of heavy cream, leave all else the same. Also VERY yummy with the cream sauce!! Simple, quick and delicious! You can change this up by adding herbs & spices, and peppers for heat, to your taste. PLENTY of other recipes to try besides frying them (although they ARE delicious fried). Newly subbed and I'm enjoying your videos!!!

I found what appears to be a giant puff ball mushroom in Ontario Canada. I am thinking it is safe to consume. Just want to make sure that there is not something that it can be confused with that is deadly. All other type of mushrooms here in your video I am not even going to ever consider for the dinner plate. Just the puffball mushroom and that is where the ball stops. But not even sure as of yet that I give this a pass. Is there a poison mushroom that looks like a giant puff ball that can kill me? That is my question. In my research on google. It is my opinion if there was. Would they not put a picture next to a mushroom you can eat but warn you of its deadly look alike? I believe they would so. More homework for me to be done before I am totally sold. Please get back to me and tell me that there is nothing it can be confused with. I believe if there was. I'd come across such a thing. But I best here from more sources. Thanx for your help. And I believe I found the mushroom that is referred to chicken of the woods. But I am not even consider it. Not allowing myself to look into other mushrooms at all. Reason is I might get it wrong. I know some experts have made wrong choices. I don't want to go into other species of mushrooms. What are your thoughts? Please let me know. Or state you don't know.

2:13 is not oyster mushrooms. Those are angel wings and will make you sick. I ate them once, making this very mistake, and had volcano booty for 30 hours. Bad ID.

Right a chantrelle has gills
@brianadams31893 жыл бұрын
Nope, it has gill-like structures on the fertile surface. If it has actual gills it is likely a Jack O Lantern(toxic look-alike)

The "old man look alike" is an old man that has been parasitized by Hypomyces chrysospermus, also called "the bolete eater".

Wow, mystery solved. thanks for pointing this out, Liam. Glad I include this the footage in the video.

I've seen the same parasite attack many other boletes as well, especially edible species. Boletus badius, and Boletus edulis grp. are two that I find frequently parasitized.

That sounds very interesting! Thanks for the information, Liam.
