Vice President of the Kitsap Mycological Society and long time forager Aaron Hilliard takes us on a guided walk into Mushroom Wonderland to discover a bunch of the mushrooms that are growing this spring. Trailside or in urban settings, Aaron tracks down the fungi and helps to describe them and teach identification characteristics as well as habitat and edibility information. If you love the outdoors mycology might just be the hobby for you. Make sure to subscribe to the channel and hit the notification bell to see upcoming episodes of Mushroom Wonderland and get hooked up with your community of mushroom lovers!
In this video we will look at some good edibles that can be foraged in the woodchips in the landscaping and some of the most common lawn mushrooms that come up in the spring. This video also shows a False Morel versus a true Morel and all of the differences. This video shows medicinal mushrooms and how to process them, and there is a cooking segment where Aaron cooks and try's a new-to-him wild mushroom that is a less popular edible.

We will not accept any responsibility for negligence or accidental ingestion of poisonous mushrooms or plants. These videos are not intended to be a definitive field guide, but rather a starting point to become familiar with habitat, Everyone is encouraged to do their own studies, acquire literature or internet resources to safely and confidently identify wild foods before they eat them. When eating a new wild mushroom, it is advised to start with only a small amount, and make sure that it is fresh and that it is cooked thoroughly. Some mushrooms do not agree with certain individuals, and this is typically discovered on a case-by-case basis. Even the most edible of mushrooms contain compounds that can be tough for the human digestive tract to handle. Some “edible” species have small amounts of certain toxins that will easily break down with cooking. Fungi contains a molecule known as chitin that is the same thing that makes the exoskeleton of shellfish so hard, and cannot be broken down by the human digestive system, so it is another good reason to thoroughly cook mushrooms. All the ideas expressed in the comments should be taken with a large grain of salt. I don’t think there is any other field of study or science that has more misinformation being shared so freely and boldly. Mushroom Wonderland and Aaron himself have no opinion and neither encourage nor discourage the use of mushrooms containing mind-altering compounds. These mushrooms contain powerful chemicals and should be treated with a high level of responsibility. Any video topics on the habitat, natural distribution, and morphological features of psychoactive mushrooms portrayed on this channel are purely for scientific and educational purposes.

I really enjoyed this as I sit relaxing on a rainy day after hunting morels for the last four days. I've found nearly 30lbs now, my feet ache and I've sent little paper bags full of morels to all our friends as it's been the best year I've ever had only a few days in and they're just everywhere this year! Happy hunting!

Check wood chip beds this time of year also. 😊 ... no section cyanescens in the spring, but you might find _Psilocybe ovoidiocystidiata_ Another urban mushroom to look for right now, in the PNW, is _Morchella importuna_ -- saprotrophic morels that pop up in crappy bark mulch beds. Usually not in large numbers, but if you keep walking around, you'll keep finding 1 or 2 here or there.

If you find an immature specimen of “The Prince” mushroom, just pick it up and put it into your fridge for a few days, and it will grow to full size. But make sure there is something damp in the container with it that it can draw moisture from, like a damp kitchen towel or another (preferably full grown) mushroom with a lot of moisture in it. I discovered this on accident after picking a couple of babies and leaving them in the fridge. (This only works well if the mushrooms are maggot free, by the way. Otherwise, the little crawlies are gonna eat your entire mushroom before you get to enjoy them. So check that there are no entry holes anywhere. You also don’t want to cut too far into the mushrooms, that seems to hinder further development.)
@misterx3188
@misterx3188 25 күн бұрын
Have you tried picking them with the base intact and some mycelium still attached to it? It has been reported that some mushrooms can then be put in a vase like flowers and continue to grow or at least stay fresh for days. I have seen several reports that it works very well with Macrolepiota spp.

I heard for a proper dosage take 50 grams of dried Turkey Tail and 1 liter of water bring them to a boil then simmer overnight in a crock pot or for a minimum of 2 hours , top up the water as needed. I reckon this would be 4 servings but could be more? Is there somebody in this KZbin that can verify the dosages and servings for the immune boosting turkey tail.

For most mushrooms I would generally not recommend putting a lid.on them. You'll steam the mushroom too much, rather than saute them. Just turn the heat up a bit more.
@mushroomwonderland1

Steaming the mushrooms isn't a bad thing. It thoroughly cooks them to the middle, then remove lid and caramelize.😁
