Time out in Scotland to work on my knee injury gave me the chance to visit some beautiful spots, including the chance for a bit of wild swimming in Loch Tay.

Hi mate. Just wondering how do you know if a river is safe to swim in? Parisities and all that. Imagine most rivers and lochs here in Scotland are pretty safe.

Hi Andrew. Good question. The Environment Agency website has a Water Quality Map on it. You can check the water quality for a certain area by putting the nearest postcode into the search and this will provide some info. Generally, if the water is flowing well, has no obvious blooms of any kind (some algae are dangerous) and there appears to be thriving wildlife then it's a good sign of clean water. Not sure about parasites, however I'm not aware of any that are a risk to humans in the UK. Let me know if you are aware of any. Cheers.

@@BeyondTheTrail Appreciate the information! Thank you. I'm not aware of any myself, just something I was concerned about.

@@BeyondTheTrail This map doesn't appear to show any results for locations north of Edinburgh. Don't suppose you know any other sites where you can find this information?

@@andy5959 no, I'm afraid not. It might be worth a quick email to the Environment Agency to ask them. British waters are generally very clean. If it's a reservoir there are sometimes information boards at the site, particularly if there is sometimes algae.

@@BeyondTheTrail No worries, that's a good idea. I'll shoot them an email and see what they say.
