I have always been apprehensive about working on a drill motor or any electric motor but after watching you do 12 or more I'm going to start on the 6 or 7 that I have from the 50s Thank you for your videos.

How timely this video is. Just a few weeks ago I stumbled upon an advertisement for an old Disston circular saw. I had no idea they made power tools.

Until I saw this drill I never knew they did either. I wonder why they got out of the game.

@@floridarusticrepairs There must have been dozens of American power tool makers in those days. I have a Sunbeam jigsaw in the basement.

@@rightlanehog3151 I've seen a Sunbeam drill before. I suppose it makes sense since they were making powered kitchen appliances that they could also make power tools.

Wow, this is like... the world's first model of cordless drill, dang! What a weird shape; sort of like one of those hand-bucket paint sprayers. (Maybe you mentioned that too, but I haven't seen the whole video yet.) And for such a small chuck, too! Man, good luck getting that into kind of a tighter space, huh?
@floridarusticrepairs
@floridarusticrepairs 6 ай бұрын
It's really fascinating how they did it. The chuck is actually mounted inside the housing so you only see the gear and jaws but there's an entire chuck in the unit. Once I got the new power cord on, it fired right up.
@HelloKittyFanMan
@HelloKittyFanMan 6 ай бұрын
@@floridarusticrepairs: Yeah, but by "small chuck," I meant that it only opens up to 1/4". Also, did you like my little joke about the cord? 😁
@floridarusticrepairs
@floridarusticrepairs 6 ай бұрын
@@HelloKittyFanMan Yes! With the shape of it you can imagine there being a battery in there. Regarding the chuck, yes, it's only a 1/4" but I'd also say it's the weakest point of the design. It's cumbersome to open and close because you need to rely on the key at all times since you can't grip it anywhere.

Holding the craftsmans drill. if your using a small bit 3/16 or below. you point along the opposite side of the drill with pointing finger. Thumb straight up on opposite side and activate trigger switch with ring finger ( 2nd finger ). Bit like your pretending to shoot the hole. If you wish to clean parts electrical, an option is mineral turps ( best cold ) washes grease well and air dries clean

Thanks for the tips! I've instinctively held a drill as you described several times to drill straight but I never gave it any thought. I'll pick up some mineral turpentine. My father used that and it's a lot cheaper to clean a housing than what I've been using. :)

I had an idea for not just one video but, you can make it a series for more views. The end goal is to create a master set from what you buy at these sales. Take one of the Craftsman chests you have acquired, refinish it, put together complete “Master Set”. Complete set of SAE and Metric wrenches, ratchets, sockets, screwdrivers, pliers, you get the idea. You can do a starter video, then as you purchase, sort, clean, maybe at the end of some videos, walk over with a cleaned up set of _____ place it into the master set build. Of course, do footage all along to keep for creating and building, etc. This could be a great long term project. It could add views to all of your videos and then a finale video of how to create a masters set from sales. Teach people how to do it. You would be perfect for this. The same things you are already doing but, building a full set. Edna can help! All the cats can help!

Funny you say that. I've been thinking the same thing and would bet that I have enough right now to build a complete set. It may not be all from the same era but I've got all of the tools. Also, I restored some 1950's Craftsman wall cabinets and once i hang them I plan on doing the same thing with those.

@@floridarusticrepairs outstanding. Great minds and all that. No, it doesn’t have to be all the same era. I figured you had more than enough but, that would give you the chance to make a centerpiece set. You have some nice chests, pick the best one, refinish it, show everyone how to do it. Then each week add “something” and put it at the end of your video to keep us all coming back and when you are done, a full compilation video. I think it would be a cool concept and you will get lots of views. Well deserved. Keep up the good work!

Thanks! I do think this is the most unusual design I've worked on but once you hold it in your hand it has a good feel to it. The weak point is that working the chuck takes time because the only way to spin it is using the key.
