I live in Oregon ,USA and I enjoyed your tutorial. I have been watching different videos and am learning that there are so many setting to try. I have a Canon T6 rebel camera with kit lenses. Just started and have been taking some great photos. We had so many fires this summer so was not able to get out and do the Milky Way. On my summer list. Will be watching for new night tutorials.

Great video, but the 500 rule says Ideal Shutter Speed= Focal Length X Crop Factor. In your case 500/(20 X 1.6), or 500/32=15.6 or about 15 seconds. The 300 rule would give an exposure of about 9 seconds.
@WildAstro3 жыл бұрын
It’s been so long since I made this film. What did I say that doesn’t agree with that? I know the 500 and 30@ rules and the 1.6 crop factor 👍🏼
@treforwilliams82703 жыл бұрын
Great video which explains clearly the basics of equipment and techniques. Looking forwards to putting them into practice tonight. Liked 👍 and subscribed. Just one question do you always keep on AWB as other videos suggest typically 4000k?
@WildAstro3 жыл бұрын
Great question. Sometimes I like to play with the white valence IF it looks like the previews aren’t showing the colours I’m seeing in front of me. For the most part though I leave it alone as it is easy to change in processing. Thanks for watching and commenting buddy, have a great night of photography!

Great video mate made me want to go out and try it myself my problem will be light pollution where i live in Milton Keynes i have a Nikon 7200 with a Nikon 1.4 lens and i hope that might be good enough to get some pics
@WildAstro4 жыл бұрын
Anything you have is good enough to get started mate, as long as you get manual control of the camera. Light pollution in Telford where I am is pretty poor too mate so don’t let that stop you. If you enjoy it then driving to a darker spot could be your goal once lockdown is over 👍🏼

That was a great tutorial mate, I've always been interested in night shots of the sky. I have a sony a5000 mirrorless camera, do you think it's possible with the right lense to use that camera? Thanks for sharing your current knowledge, all the best Steve 👍
@WildAstro4 жыл бұрын
Yes mate absolutely! Mirrorless cameras are fast becoming the go-to camera for Astrophotography at the moment so if it’s of a decent quality then of course you can use that! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment mate. Stay safe! 👍🏼

Everything was spot on, other than Venus the star (it's a planet ;)). For sanity, I would stick to the 300/400 rule, the 500 rule was intended for video motion blur years ago, and is useless when getting closer to the equatorial plane.

Did you considered the Pentax K1 or K3 for a light astrophotography setup, as it can track without extra hardware.
@WildAstro3 жыл бұрын
No. Because I already had my camera before I got into Astrophotography I had to adapt what I had to work. Can’t afford a different camera body at the moment so will be sticking with what I have for now. Thanks for the suggestion though, I will definitely consider those models when the time comes 👍🏼
@andreaspe99353 жыл бұрын
@@WildAstro yes, switching brands could cost extra money. At least it could save a tracker for wide astro shots. It should also work with 300mm lenses but I did not had luck with that.

So what happens of you expose for 2min with iso 100?

You would get little lines instead of stars mate, because the stars would move while the shutter is open and create lines instead of points.

I guess I’ll count myself lucky that my spam filter caught his original comment. Something about it being “unwatchable due to my shitty music”. Fortunately the rest of the 3,000 folk who have watched it have managed to discern between the music and words. 🤷🏻♂️
