I'm 45 years old and considering doing camping for the first time (for some reason unknown to me) - picking up some valuable tips from these videos

Practice pooping on the floor. Make sure to take a trowel too so you can bury it. I take a lot of food and all the walking with the weight on makes me poop. I'm still not great at pooping outdoors but my friend keeps a look out for me and sings me soothing songs. He keeps a logbook and is coaching me on it. He's a very experienced pooper but I'm getting there, I'm getting there.

Not sure where to start with the comments…first off, omg your rapid evolution to one of the top KZbin channels, you should have a million subscribers. The gear choices show an obvious series of choices based on USE, not some armchair BS. I’ve never even seen a Hilleberg tent but from what I can tell they are the Gold Standard of bomber tents. You post some of the absolute best videos on KZbin, I hope you continue! I’m still not sure how your partner can leave you to do these solo adventures, be safe!

You've got quite a comprehensive set of gear there, just 1 change I would recommend is to exchange the opinel for a multi tool, small swiss army knife or similar, couple of extra tools there, incase you need to tighten a screw up on your tripod or similar. It’s good to see you have a routine packing and unpacking it helps to make sure you don’t forget something. A tip I learned from my grandma, she put scented soap in drawers at home, when you open a drawer it had an amazing smell so I pack my stuff with a bar of my favourite soap it’s so nice.
@WildBeare2 жыл бұрын
Ahh that's nice, I totally get that ☺️ I don't wear perfume but one of my photography clients gave me a tiny vial of lovely fragrance. So I spray it on a sweet elephant I keep on my bed, I also spray it on my camping pillow so it makes my tent smell like my bed at home. It's a simple comfort that can make all the difference in a stormy or unfamiliar territory 🤍

There are other tents out there, and if you go used, you can get a deal. If you have a local outdoor club, you may also be able to split costs with other members. REI in the states rents winter gear; not sure if there's a UK equivalent, but it's a good way to get into it if you only do it once or twice a season. Still gotta have the clothes, though.

If it isn't obvious from Claire's video, always pack the bag in the reverse order you need the stuff. Tent first, in case it,s raining or snowing. Then the floor/mats, and the sleep system to unroll onto it. Unless you plan to cook enroute, cooker and food come next, followed by other gear you'll want in the tent.

Great video. I like your use of the bottom compartment for cook kit etc. I’ll try that on mine. A suggestion for you regarding the tent…,don’t put it into the nyloflume bag since the tent, even thought it’s in its own stuff sack, can be damp. Close the pack liner first without the tent inside it and this will give you more of the pack liner bag to twist closed. Then toss the tent in on top.

Good point about keeping your first aid kit accessible. Last week I accidently cut off part of the tip of my finger with my knife. Carelessness on my part. Digging around one handed for the first aid kit was pretty difficult, and also discovered how difficult it is to open a wound dressing with one hand! I think I might look at getting a mini first aid pouch to keep clipped to my belt.

A great guide to people thinking of doing this sort of stuff. I would suggest putting the ice axe through the loop at the bottom of the rucksack and then tip it up and secure with the rucksack bungee so the tip points upwards. It keeps it further out of harms way on the back of the rucksack, should you fall your pack will protect you.

Ha got the same mat and bag . Use it here in Sierra navada Spain. Used it in kyrgyzstan last year and was sleeping in underwear and t shirt and was warm . Most of the other people on the trip were having to sleep in layers of clothes . Gas can be an issue, you need to remember cold weather gas and if there is no water and you are melting snow you will use 4 x what you would use if water was available. Have used 390g for an evening and breakfast + melting drinks. Very dangerous here at the moment as the snow has consolidated into ice and there have been 4 fatalities due to falls and hypothermia. A tip with your ice axe is if you are approaching risky ground tuck it down between your body and rucksack so you can deploy it without tacking your rucksack off which can unbalanced you. Lesson learned the hard way while snowshoeing. Great video as per usual.

She loves her gear. So young and so strong. I like to try the Seal Skin gloves. The ones in the past trapped too much sweat. A light disposable plastic bag liner. Good idea. I like my gear but I learned over the years I like being pain free even more. I have ditched the floor liner. Let the tent get damaged. A small sewing kit and sealant. Or just duct tape. Thermarests tend to be very sensitive to puncture, even when its stored away, I use a different brand now. Only one bag, for the wet tent. Everything else gets tossed in the backpack. No walking stick, just a real stick and I toss it when not needed. No ice pick. Never ended up using it. It's for climbing. And the HIGHEST fill down. It's warmer per pound. 650 is terrible. I use it now as a home blanket. 800+ for trips. And one that is snug, it's warmer and lighter. And wait for it ..... Want a hot tent to dry the gear but don't want to pack a stove? Install a large window with transparent material in the door of the tent. Make a big campfire outside. A reflective on the inside to reflect the radiation back in. A good 30F warmer inside.

That's a drawback of winter camping, you have to carry a lot more weight. I am happy to see you are using a proper tent for winter. You should trade one of your empty water bottles for a metal thermos. You can fill it up with hot water before bed, cover it with a thick sock, and you can use it instead of heat pads to stay warm in your sleeping bag. Plus you will have water to cook breakfast with!
