This was not what I had in mind 😬
It’s 3 weeks later, I’m weightbearing fine now and I’ve tried a few short walks wearing a brace on the damaged ankle with splints in the sides. So far so good! But I won’t be walking any long distance for a bit. Physio starts soon and hopefully I’ll find out that it’ll be possible to strengthen the ankle 🤞

EDIT/UPDATE late October.. It's now nearly 6 weeks later (injury was mid Sept) and I've only just found out that the ankle actually dislocated (as in, it snapped out of the joint and back in real fast) damaging ligaments on one side and breaking a tiny bit of bone off the other. I have to do a lot of work on strengthening the muscles in the ankle to try and compensate for the weakness caused by repeatedly injuring it. I'm starting on this now and although I will always have to be very careful with it, I'm determined that it's not gonna stop me doing what I love. But I might have to make some adjustments. We'll see how it goes -- Thanks so much for all the well wishes guys 🤗I'm starting physio next week, see if I can get some stability back in it 🤞Much Love and have a lovely weekend xx

Sorry to see you’ve injured yourself doing something you love. I can relate having recently developed swimmers’s shoulder from too much swimming with flawed technique. I’m also taking physio to hopefully recover and get back to what I love. Best of luck and hope you can too!

Ouch! I've just recovered from a similar injury. The swelling took a few days to come out, the bruising too. Took me about 6 weeks to get back to running. The AirCast ankle braces are the best.

My sis, Janet, stubbed and fractured her little toe in a motel shower stall. She had responded to Idalia Hurricane in Cedar Key, Flowida. Then i stubbed my toe soon after chasing Raccoon buddy out of living room after feeding him or her. While climbing down a sailboat project ladder, a loud airplane noise scared this writer, twisting ankle. Dr. said slow and rest ( Inversion Sprain below the bone exterior of foot ). I favored the injury a long time. Crutches, Walking Stick, and reading paid off. Please relax and don’t let other’s hurried lifestyle affect !

Careful Claire. I turned my ankle hiking. I didn’t think much about it, but within 24 hours I just couldn’t walk. The damned quack dismissed it as a sprain, but it turned out to be septic - and that despite there being no wound. A year on crutches, two surgeries, a couple of months on IV antibiotics and two of the most expensive joint screws in Christendom later, I can walk again. I never risk not having ankle support now. Stay safe.

Don't ever walk on a sprained ankle, it'll get worse and take even longer to heal. Keep your foot raised over some pillows and apply ice to the area 20 minutes or so at a time (20 min on, 1 hour off). It helps to slow down blood circulating the area, thus a quicker healing process. If direct contact with a bag of ice or an instant cold pack to your ankle is too cold, just wrap it in a towel. Sorry you had to experience that while trying to enjoy the outdoors, get well soon.

I was coming downhill once and slipped on a rock and twisted my ankle. I could hear it cracking as I went down. Two strangers helped me to the bottom of the hill. The next problem was I had ridden my bike several miles to get there. One of the strangers rode my bike back to my car while his wife drove me in their car -- they were a godsend. I had torn 3 ligaments in my ankle and was in an orthotic boot for 6 months. It was more months after that before I could hike again. I started racewalking about a year after, which seemed to help the healing -- low impact combined with a cardiovascular workout. Your injury doesn't seem as bad as mine was, so hopefully it won't take you as long to heal. Best wishes on your recuperation.

Out dog walking on news years day I broke my ankle in 2 places on a tiny wet patch of grass. I had a mile and a half hop back to car. No one else around at 9am!! Waited 3 wks for an op, now have pins and screws in ankle. Long road to recovery, the docs said a year till more normal. 🤷‍♀️ Just finished physio last week, so don’t rush things, you need your ankle for everything. It’s still swollen and red and can’t do 3 days of dog walks on the trot. ( haha, no trotting here!!) So go carefully. Good luck. 🇬🇧🐶

Hi Claire, Very sorry to read about your sprained ankle, I’m a past master of the torn ankle ligaments so you have my full sympathy😢. Well done for carrying on, I bet a fair percentage would have whimped out, but you kept going and once again turned the whole thing into a positive experience, good on ya. You even got your thunderstorm⛈🌩!! Get well soon Cheers Graham

That linen bandage is doing nothing. Your med kit MUST include at least one crepe bandage, they do provide support. Just a comment from an ex-paramedic. My med kit is half of my carry equipment, and always has been. Perhaps you should buy an inflatable ankle brace, one that can be adjusted for tightness. Great to see you had the right mind to make the decision about going back. Who knows which MRT would turn out? On a lighter note:- you spoiled their fun trip out hunting for you.

I feel your pain. I have a tendency for my ankles to turn as well, and hobbled around for two months once after a bad twist. Hope your healing goes well, and everyone out there, watch your footing!

I know how you feel with weak joints. Especially in my ankles and knees. I have twisted them, sprained them, fractured and broken them doing so many different accidents. There are so many things out there that can help you in adapting in what you want to do. I wish I could spend that time with you in the wilderness enjoying that refreshing swim, looking under the stars whilst doing a nice dinner. I’ve only recently come across your videos and I’m fascinated by them on how you make me feel like I’m in the journey with you. I hope one day after my back surgery I could do small walks and get back to camping. Xx

I actually cried at the end of this video 😭I've been watching your channel for several years now and I found your videos in the darkest time when I was really unwell and absolutely gutted because I felt like everything had been taken from me and I would never properly be able to enjoy the outdoors again. I related so much to your videos as another mud loving female who always did a ton of hiking and camping and swimming etc. I love watching you nerd out about gear because im exactly the same, i actually have the same floofy rab sleeping bag and yellow thermarest 🤣Seeing your adventures always gives me goosebumps because I feel like I was able to live vicariously and it made me so happy and kept me sane to see you doing all the exact kind of stuff I loved doing. I know you have mentioned hypermobility before but I didn't realise you had HSD! I have EDS! Your shout out at the end of the video as well as learning that my favourite outdoorsy person is also a wonky connective tissue person made me cry so much 😭I've always felt so alone struggling with EDS whilst still trying to be outdoorsy, and I felt like the odds were stacked against me. Funnily enough I also have chronic instability in my right ankle from injuring it too many times! I fractured it getting out of my car a couple years ago and then wild camping on dartmoor i tore a ligament doing a silly dance in front of my tent on sheepstor 🤦‍♀ And then had to walk back to the car with it the next day 😂😅 I'm so sorry you're injured, and I hope with the brace and the physio you recover well, i know what a pain in the butt hypermobility related injuries are! i can also heavily relate to injuring yourself doing silly things like getting out the car, and then walking up a mountain 😂 I've wanted to comment on your videos for ages but never had the confidence to, but seeing this today I knew i just had to. Since being really unwell (I am also lucky enough to have eds' lovely companions pots and mcas) I'm slowly able to do a little more now, I did two wild camps last year which is definitely an improvement on zero! This year I've started doing regular cold water immersion again in the sea and various quarries and lakes around cornwall (another thing I was so excited to see that you did too!). Honestly, over the years you've given me so much inspiration and hope and now to find out that you have HSD too... felt like such a crazy mad parallel and just made me feel like it IS possible and im not alone 🥲if you ever want to talk to a fellow wonky connective tissue adventure-y outdoorsy person, i have a tiny little baby instagram @adventures_of_a_zebra where i try to show my perspective of being outdoorsy with eds. ps I also enjoyed the mordor reference, huge lotr fan as you might be able to tell from my profile picture! 😂❤

I might be strange, but I want to see the full video. The struggle to get back home after an injury, those are the things ppl only ever talk about but we rarely experience. If you filmed it, I would honestly love to see and be part of that grimacing journey back home. These literally are the things that make us stronger :)

I may have said this previously. With all my various boots, from very early in the piece, I change the laces to something purchased from the big box hardware store; venetian blind cord or starter cord (the kind used to start lawn-mowers). It's really hardy stuff, wont fray/break and lasts forever. After being caught very early on in my outdoor career, I have been doing it for years and haven't been let down once since.

Fantastic video as always. Love the shot of the gopro by the feet looking at the reflection of the mountains on the lake! Nothing worse than standing up letting the blood rush into a swollen ankle after a sleep. Hope it gets better soon! Take care.

Claire, I feel your pain. I also experienced ankle injury when I was hiking. I didn’t have anything to wrap the ankle but I made a temporary splint and took ibuprofen for the pain. It worked until I managed to get back and got proper medical assistance. I hope you are ok and try to stay off of it until it heals. Take care of yourself

Every sympathy, when working in South America driving a Overland Truck, I broke my ankle and opposite knee falling down hotel steps when carrying people's bags from the hotel. Strapped my boot on and carried on. Tried to get an x-ray in Puno with equipment from the 1940's and it wasn't clear. Could hobble with crutches but carried on driving for a month and eventually got back to the UK 3 months later. Ended up having an operation on my ankle and knee but they've never been the same. Hope you recover fully 😢

Hi I hope you are well and the ankle is gaining strength and recovering to allow you to have mobility again. Reviewing a couple of your short films has rekindled my love for being alone with natural beauty. One thing I have observed and it may ring true with you. As a child I loved making dens and feeling safe within them, camping in my dads allotment under a plastic green house. 😂. I feel that yourr moments wrapped up in a warm tent may bring to the surface similar warm loving feelings you had with your family, the do for me. See you on your next adventure.😎👍
