Wildcamping in the Lake District. Easedale tarn. What a mess!

Following the Cumbria Way, I needed a nice easy camp, so my friend Paul.and I headed up to Easedale Tarn for the night, we were joined by just one other person, probably the last chance we'll get for a honey spot with summer coming up. There was a time (which spanned many decades) when wild campers had a night out, and told only their friends and family about it. These days, wild camping is plastered all over KZbin, Instagram and Facebook for all to see. The tacit agreement between responsible campers and land owners is being put under great strain due to the publicising of what was once a discreet activity. Food for thought?

Whilst I do feel like you have a small point, it's not us youtubers that are the problem, I don't see any of us saying it's OK to leave a mess behind, we are all responsible and clearly show LNT it's not us putting the agreement under strain, it's the idiots with no morals that think it's OK to leave whatever they can't be bothered to carry back to the car.

I am an advocate for more access rather than less and as an outdoor professional I believe that wild camping should be a right if done responsibly. Unfortunately, via social media, the cat has been let out of the bag and it's not going back in. I don't know what the answer is but education must play a part. The difficulty with niche channels such as yours is that you're likely preaching to the converted. There has to be a way of getting the LNT message out to those that really need it.

Well done for clearing up the mess. I think wild camping is getting out of control. As I walk down from Bleaklow (Peak District) today it's throwing it down with rain and the moor is completely water logged. And yet the number of folks walking up late in the day camping in a fragile environment is just incredible. Many seemed to lack basic clothing, and clearly common sense. To end I found a bag of rubbish left in the carpark below the moor. It was clear it had been left by a wild camper. My disgust was equal to yours.

Am in total agreement, i'm always bringing down more than I take up on a walk - you always find something some scrote left behind On the subject of leave no trace I went on a day hike up around Angle tarn last weekend and found an abandoned wild camp - looks like a large group went up and got caught out in the winds last week - they left EVERYTHING!! Great big gazebo tent, sleeping bags, towels, food, litter, beer bottles, bags, some clothes, a football, just everything. I was absolutely fuming and also really sad. The place was a real mess. I only had my little day pack with me so had to put on all my extra clothing to make room for some of their kit - I also filled 3 big Aldi shopping bags (also left behind) and cleared up as much as I could carry. I ended up walking down with 1 bag and a load of wet towels etc strapped to my pack and carried the other 2 shopping bags rammed with all I could fit in - I got nearly 30Kg of their crap off the hill but was left annoyed that I couldn't get the tent down, I just couldn't physically carry it, I got most of their kit and all the rubbish but not the tent. I had to leave that and will be try to head back up with a knife and a big pack so I can remove it Utter @rseholes the lot of them - ruining it for everyone

I don’t wild camp, in fact I don’t even go camping that often but I do enjoy walking in the hills and moorland in such places as The Lakes, Yorkshire Dales, even Scotland with my dogs and I wouldn’t dream of leaving litter there. Like you I’ll always pick up discarded items I find as there’s absolutely no excuse for it other than a blatant disregard and lack of respect for the natural beauty of these locations. 👍

Just came across your channel Paul , stopped at Easedale Tarn last year on the way up to Helm Crag for a wild camp which was an absolutely stunning place, so to see dirty scummy rats leave it in that state was sickening. Great video Paul, you got a new sub👍

Indeed they do, I parked in the lay-by on the a591 just before the Grasmere turning, it does add a little to yhe walk, but not much, just walk around the bottom of helm crag, atb Paul 🙏🏕🏕🏕😁

I've taken 22 kilos of rubbish out of the hills this year . The way I look at is that for some reason something happens to them , either in their mind or they have had some serious incident that required them to leave in a hurry . Some people don't even notice stuff fly out of their bag as they leave , thinking it's still attached to Thier bag , or if it's a few people they all think each other took the rubbish bag home with good intentions . I don't bother trying to get mad about it. Even people leaving orange skins boils my piss . But where does it get us . Just lump it out , make days where you intend to clean it up and enjoy the resulting beauty you restore to the area . Laying down blame is too easy , it's just speculation without proof. That's what newspapers do.

How can people be so lazy, selfish, arrogant, disgusting… Grrr! What can we do?! I have to say you were very good to pick up someone else’s dirty secret… don’t know I could do that. Well done!
