I'm sure most people know but in case you don't these birds will also peck until they cause a bleeding wound upon which they will feed. So they are not wholly symbiotic.
@malaysianman59414 жыл бұрын
I think its pretty clear tht the bird is not picking away ticks, if u notice, its picking at the same spot over and over, its picking away at a wound in the ear.

Yeah, Oxpeckers are actually assholes. Though to be fair, I do not know if this applies to all species.
@maisie27304 жыл бұрын
A lot of cleaner species, whether is be birds or fish will obviously clean ticks and parasites, but they will also create wounds to drink blood. There's a really interesting research paper on cleaner fish (blinies I believe) and the frequency of this behaviour when with fish that would and wouldn't allow it.
@TarsonTalon4 жыл бұрын
If there are no ticks, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. The deer probably lets it because it can't tell whether or not there is a tick.
@WC3fanatic9974 жыл бұрын
HisSpeedBullet posted this: "Oxpeckers will sit on certain mammals and target the ticks and other small parasites found on the skin and in the coats of these animals. Oxpeckers’ bills are especially adapted to their lifestyle. The bills are pointed as well as laterally compressed which helps the birds work their way through the coats of the mammals in a comb-like fashion and to pry out well embedded parasites. The birds are also known to help clean-up open wounds. What they are after around the open sore is the rotting wound tissue. Oxpeckers are quite efficient at cleaning these lesions." Not sure how accurate but I dont see why not, the birds wouldn't want to intentionally hurt the animals since they'd be getting free, easily acquired food from them on a regular basis anyway.

It is actualy more closer parasitism unfortunately. What ever the Oxpecker does, it is not to the benefit of the Impala. Most likely it is in fact damaging. If it does peck away some ticks, it is more a happy coincidence, but they are mostly after animal blood (wich they do get over the ticks, if they are bloated already, but they often create their own source by pecking open a wound)
