I have answers for you. The piece of tin you found was likely covering a prospect, or an explosives stow box. The cable you found was likely a part of a headframe for pulling cars from a decline or lowering men into a shaft. Follow the cable, and you'll likely find remains of a headframe and a shaft/decline. You may also find the remains of a tram. The banana-split pipe you found looked like a water line to supply drilling tools to the face or a survey bore-hole for prospecting at depth. The PVC frame with screen material on it is a fairly modern (albeit 1970's and newer for standard, but sometimes as old as late 1880's) screen from a hand-made sluice box. Likely prospector level, not operational. The attached wire was likely there to act as an electrode to attract calcium or some other material to attempt to refine the placer material somewhat. It could also have been routed through the PVC as a means of connecting power to a water pump on one end of the sluice to a power source on the other. The lone piece of PVC you found was likely a makeshift claim stake or a sleeve for a prospectors bore-hole. The area you walked to was secondary growth, which means it was completely cleared out for operation. The concrete you found looked like foundations to an assay house, a kiln, and/or an onsite reduction mill for concentrating ores. There's a 90% chance that you've just found yourself an old mining camp.

You should do some research and see what you can find out about that underground structure. Maybe do a 2 day camp there and another video to explore that more. We would all love to see it. AMAZING find. Would love to see more of that structure and whats under that metal. It looked like another bunker. There was something under it. All the green moss reminds me of the pacific northwest Oregon and Washington are like that everywhere. Even in the big cities. Another great video. Thank you for sharing

I had an experience in a forest camp ground. It had rained, it was October/November the rain stopped and it was overcast. night fell. We turned out the lights and couldn't see our hands in front of our faces. No sound at all but our breathing. Really spooky. we finally decided that it was so dark, nothing else could see either so wouldn't be bothering us. :)

My guess is, 60 years ago that wasn’t “the middle of nowhere”, concrete is usually all that’s left when houses that old are abandoned, and digging down provided natural air conditioning and refrigeration. Probably an old farmhouse or even a garage/barn/workshop. That would explain the tractor tire as well as why there’s a clearing there in the first place. I find random debris out in the woods all the time, storms blow crap for miles before it finally comes back down, especially here in tornado country.

Very nice video, oh yes reminded me of when I did a lone fighter and survival training with the paratroopers over 40 tens of years ago. 4 weeks alone across Siberia. Against this vermin, we had dissolved tobacco in alcohol and rubbed ourselves with it from time to time. Was also good against all other insects. Mosquitoes would have eaten you otherwise. To today, our equipment was already completely different. You had to find your own food on the way, which was not always so nice. Greetings from Frankfurt and stay healthy

I was in the Dutch army. Space is rather limited in the Netherlands so we went on live fire exercises in Germany. Once we visited Bergen Belsen, a huge ww2 concentration camp turned into a memorial. Very impressive and what i noticed was the complete silence. No birds, not a sound from the forest around it. Just silence. Like even the birds knew terrible things happened there. When there's silence in a forest, there's something wrong.

Old growth forests typically have huge trees that subdue smaller trees. When a fire or man clears the area, the smaller trees (under growth) grow thick now that the older trees are gone. We should all respect the land: if your intent is righteous, any sound you make becomes part of the areas story... in fact you SHOULD make some noise to let brother bear know you are in the area; but you are the true expert here so I defer to you. When I was a child, I went camping with my elders. I was skipping some stones across the sea, when one of my uncle asked me what I was doing. I said, "Skipping stones". My uncle said, "Don’t do that". Later, after dinner, I asked my Aunty, "why did Uncle tell me not throw stones?" She said, "you should not disturb the Aina (land) without Pono (righteous intent).”

This is your best ever. Thank you. Regarding not disturbing the spirits of the mountain. Its logical. It means that if you are on a hunt, you wont get the dear becaurse you disturb it. Or that you will attrack attention from things you didnt want attention from.. Other ppl or bears. Its like the saying about not placing shoes on the table. it will bring you bad luck. Thats logical too: Things you step in, you dont want on your hans or in you mouth.. You will get sick from it. For me its logic. Regarding the satellits. I Do the same. It wet the curriosity to look at arears and finding stuff that dont fitt in naturally. Also. the best hikes i have been on is the ones off road off tracks. - You get more experiences with animals. In the 70's I learned a little lesson about just going for a stroll in the woods. Where I lived in Missouri it was 4 miles into town by the road but only about a mile if you cut across. One day I decided to go into town by cutting across. Went down into a valley and there was a small creek I didn't know existed and I crossed it and up on the other side, I came across a still. Luckily there was nobody there and if they had any traps set I didn't get into any of them. After that, I decided to take off into the woods was not such a great idea.

Ever since you showed that thumbnail photo, I've been anxiously awaiting this incredible adventure! It was not a disappointment. Great adventure, Luke. While living in AZ a good friend of mine was an American native, an Apache of the Chiracao (sp?) tribe. He taught me a lot about exploring the desert canyons and while hiking he hardly spoke, always using hand signals. Having military training I understood his signals. He spoke of his ancestors and that their spirits still roamed in those canyons. To be loud and obnoxious was to offend those spirits. Anyway, I love to bushwhack...you never know what you'll encounter. For me it's an incredible way to find new camping sites, mostly stealth ones. All of your gear from your backpack to the "Big Bird" tarp and groundsheet :), to the cool bug net and that awesome stove, the appropriate attire and layering made this a cool video, belying the experience and skills you possess. Every time I see you extract one of the "Real Turmat" meals from your backpack it reminds me that I am seriously tiring of Mountain House and the Pantry meals. I've been taking leftover chili, spaghetti, and meatloaf on my trips. I wonder if a distributor is located here in the U.S. for Real Turmat. Time to research.

An old homestead. I have found lots of these out hiking in MO and here in KY. No telling how old it is. I have even found an old truck that was rusted out and had trees growing up through it. I bet if you would have spent a day there running around, you would have found an old dump too. Lots of the old homesteads would use either a sinkhole or a ravine/draw to dump their trash into. Good video. Thanks for sharing!

Gotta be careful when you look under things in the forest, could be 'home' to things with teeth and maybe poisonous ones too. Don't do like Luke did- use a long stick to lift it or leave it be. Lighter odd stuff in the deep woods could have been carried there by a tornado from miles away.

Master Luke, Randy from NOLA. This is one of your best videos as of yet. I’m so relaxed right now just watching your video of possibly some of my old stomping grounds when I was young .But then, it could be the Makers Mark that I’m drinking. I’m loving it. I remember, my nephew and I, use to run in woods exactly like this, about 55 years ago. Oops, showing some age here, but we loved doing it also. When you get a chance, please go back and check out the structure, and keep the videos coming. Oh well, little Cajun girl made me a gumbo, sorry, time to go eat. Later my friend.

When I think about how many times a cellphone has let me down, i just couldn't do what you did. I just have confidence in my Garmin 64st with 100k topo map's built in and if I pick out spot on the map and walk to it my GPS will tell me down to feet of how close I'm getting to the spot and what's in the way between me and my destination

I can say that I haven’t had a cell phone stop working in at least 7 or 8 years, maybe longer. The software and tech on dedicated GPS devices is literally 20 years behind cell phone apps like GAIA GPS. If I did a ton of off-trail backpacking in extremely remote parts of the country, I’d get one as a backup to my cell phone, but other than that I wouldn’t touch one.

+1 for cellphones. I run a 26,000mAh battery backup and the OnX Hunt app. I download 5, 10, and 100 square mile maps of the area I'll be in ahead of time, and run in airplane mode to maximize battery life. On a 4 day paddleboard trip in a chain of islands in northern Wisconsin this past summer, I think I recharged my phone once? That included taking a ton of photos and video. I got back and I hadn't even come close to using 25% of my battery bank. It still showed full available power. Never failed me once, despite being completely submerged (phone was in my pocket, battery bank was high & dry in a bag strapped to my board) when I fell off in the middle of a lake. Modern phones are awesome!

Hello, this is Randy from Virginia! I really enjoy your channel. When I can go hiking, I always get to do some bushwhacking.8 out of 10 times, I always find some really cool places and or artifacts, from a bygone era. Once I'd stumbled across a 1960's Winnebago that a massive oak tree, that had fallen on it and had crushed it rite down to the rear axle. O.M.G. That was just off an old login road. The weirdest thing I've come across was a U.S.millitary do not enter sine shot to h***! I continued for about half a mile where I'd stumbled across a bunker that looked a lot like the one in your vid. Later, I spoke to the N.P.S. ranger and she told me, that it was a listening post during W.W.11. It was taken over by the National Park Service in the late '50s. I think that pipe was maybe a wellhead or possibly a signpost? The wires look like, a N.O.R.A.D. sensor, that a bushcraft-er had tried rip out of the ground. Once I'd come across an old copper still that had appeared to have been blown up by revenuers in the '20s.L.O.L. I'm curious, what is the strangest thing that you have ever had happen or seen in your trek's? I use Google maps, and have located quite a few new spots that I really want to explore! I'll need about 5 or 6 days to really find out what's up with the target spot!! There are so many places to explore! I really need a hiking buddy, but unfortunately, no-one wants to go hiking or is afraid to go out into the woods. In July it will have been, 8 years since I'd lost my wife to cancer. We were married for 33 years and she was everything! She was my hiking buddy and my very best friend in the world! I know she is with me all ways! 2 years ago, I'd started getting back into hiking, with new gear and a better attitude. Can't wait to get back on the trail!! It's really too bad, that in this day and time, and with the internet, I can't seem to find anyone that is game to go on a short trek with me! Are there any takers? If so, please contact me by Gmail, (t.c.mouser@gmail.com) to make contact. P.S. I hope it's ok to post this on your channel? If not please R.S.V.P. me. Love, Live, Repeat!

I would argue there’s benefits to both. In a place you’re not familiar with if something were to happen and you would need emergency assistance, it would be good to have a color that stands out so you could possibly be found more easily, rather than becoming another statistic David paulides would put in one of his books. If you’re wanting to avoid being seen, then it might not be a bad idea to have camouflage
