The Blizzard Survival Jacket is a compact, warm, weatherproof, and relatively lightweight emergency survival product that has caught our attention. Is it worth the expense and extra weight vs. a heavy-duty garbage bag? Dr. Donner and Charles from PerSys Medical demonstrate.

MedWild provides wilderness medicine, wilderness survival, and search and rescue instructional videos on a variety of topics: high altitude illness, traveler’s diarrhea, shoulder dislocation and reduction, shelter building, bushcraft, space blankets, hypothermia, medical kits, survival kits, frostbite, snake bites, fire craft, ropes and knots, orthopedic injuries and sam splints, cold water immersion and more.

Useful video, thanks. I’ve used the 3 layer bag version and found it to warm all night. The inner layer is perforated to reduce condensation. This jacket could be paired with a knee length bag to protect the legs when laying down, but as with any emergency bag a good insulating mat is essential as heat is conducted away rapidly by the cold ground. On the subject of mats, thinner foam mats can be worn around the torso as additional insulation or as a ‘kilt’ to protect the thighs from cold and rain while walking. Two thin mats fold to pack easier than one thick mat and can be shared.

A food vacuum food saver does a very good job getting these back to a small package, not as small as the original but close

How much does this weigh? This looks way better than my flimsy space blanket type bivy and reach my ankles since I’m short.

You mean a thermal blanket? But .... you said those don't work and are too noisy to want to be rescued with. Hmmmm... LOL
