My Grandparents always had German Shepherds and my earliest memories was how every single one would instantly gravitate towards me and my siblings on the floor naturally, almost assuming a kind of guarding role. They are drawn towards children and are so intelligent and sweet natured. Wonderful breed. Great video!

I work on a Sar team in Florida we are very busy, probably the busiest in the state of Florida. Most of our calls are in the city and we usually get called within an hour of law enforcement arriving on scene. In addition to missing person calls we also do many medical standbys throughout the year on various events throughout our county. And we train once a week and a full Saturday of every month at a minimum we have specialty teams that also train additionally throughout the month in addition to the regular training
@Hal-Robinson

And I think it's pretty cool that you actually did a video on a search and rescue team it's one of the things that I was hoping that you would do eventually. Whenever we get our new station we've completely outgrown our current station and in the next couple years we will have to get a new station because we have so many vehicles and apparatus and equipment right now we have completely overgrown it would be awesome to have you come down and do a station cribs.

The GSD looks exactly like mine. She’s 1. I haven’t trained her for this yet but she is so strongly scent driven that I think I’d be doing the world a disservice by not at least speaking to a trainer on how to go about getting her up to speed to be a SAR doggo. I’m in PA too so thank you so much for posting this!

@@HeroesNextDoor That is odd. Maybe a lot of the viewers just want to see firehouse and fire trucks? I think this is great though. Search like this is highly specialized and it mostly outside of the realm of local FDs. The faster a team such as this is called the better the odds are of locating the lost person.

Great video. Great representation of a SAR K9 team. As for the Air Scent K9 like the one in the video, a bell is nice, but an Astro GPS collar works great because you can see exactly where they are on your GPS. My Belgain Malinois ranges out of view and it's nice to see where he is and see his tracks especially if he stops and shows interest in something.

The only maddening thing is that these wonderful people (and dogs) have to buy/pay for their own equipment. That's just ridiculous. The least society could do would be to compensate these folks for any equipment they require to SAVE FREAKING LIVES. These are true heroes!

I was very interested in doing this with my current dog but after talking to the local group as well as others on various FB groups, I was given very good info on why i would not do well physically at this time even though my dog has the ability. Instead I use her for fun in finding people I know in different places and utilize camping trips and hikes for personal searches and leave the life or death ones up to the professionals

There is a difference between search and rescue and a manhunt. In the first instance you want to be found In the second, not so much
@michaelborrello9944
@michaelborrello9944 2 жыл бұрын
The dogs used for a manhunt would be different. That's because once the subject is found security and safety becomes the issue. The way the dogs' search would be similar but again once the person is found is the real difference.

Hey, Member and K9 handler for PaWSAR here. Basically, some handlers can "push" their dogs towards something they want if they really want to do a specific thing, but most including myself don't, and allow the dog to show us what they are naturally best at.

How does a civilian help with Search & Rescue? Is there some recognized certification that is needed? I tried to sign up to be alerted if there is a local Amber or Silver alert, such as for urban or forest searching, and every police/fire either tells me they do not offer anything, or I get no responses.
@CharlesKarino
@CharlesKarino Күн бұрын
I am not really sure, you can probably volunteer for the job with your local S&R. Search and rescue don’t need to be in the Police or Fire Departments, rather it can be in like a civilian made organization.

Just so everyone that isn’t familiar knows. Those may be gps collars. But e collars aren’t shock collars. An e collar is like a tins unit. Very low level electricity stimulating muscles. Not high electricity shocks like a taser. So at a low level the e collar is like putting your hand on them and pulling a little. Or a little pull on the leash. Hey stop being distracted and get in task. You know better. It’s not for teaching. It’s literally an E leash more than an E collar when used correctly. When they’re a little distracted. That’s all. Please learn don’t just go with the stigmas and common rhetoric. Go learn. For the dogs. We need these tools. It’s idiots miss using them that make them looking so awful. But big bold dogs need more than treats and yes to learn. They need more direction and structure. They’re not a little froofroo toy dog. For their sake. Please look to learn the most you can before forming an opinion on training tools. They’re is a ton of BAD info and worse practices.
@Bearded_SARTECH
@Bearded_SARTECH Жыл бұрын
Very true. Our team has GPS collars for downloading the tracks for later analysis and mapping of the search area. Well trained K9s will not need constant correction, therefore will not need shock collars. Thanks for the comment and clarification.
@jessicagislason4855
@jessicagislason4855 Жыл бұрын
Very true plus a lot of people knocking E collars are people who will only spend 30$ max on a quick fix and are shocked when a cheap product is cheap, as far as I'm concerned only high grade hunting and gps collars should be produced and sold in the first place, if someone can't put in the money and time to learn to use it then the dog is better off not having it at all rather than some 15$ Petco 'corrector' collar. My coonhound has been saved twice by her E-collar once with a feral boar on a hike and once when a giant wasp nest was disturbed
