Question about the day hatch: Can I only use it during the day, or can it also be used during night ??

Two questions please; does the day hatch just open into the rear dry compartment or ids it isolated meaning is there another bulkhead for it? How much room does the skeg box take up? Looking for max storage capacity - do either of those significantly effect on that? Thanks.

Good questions! The day hatch is separated from the stern hatch by a bulkhead unlike Wilderness Systems Tsunami series which does not include the third bulkhead. The skeg box does take up a bit of space in the back hatch, but you are able to pack around it. I typically put longer items around the skeg box such as a tent page or a rolled up sleeping pad / bag. In terms of overall capacity, if you view the boat on our website, you'll see that we indicate capacity of each hatch as well as a total capacity for all hatches - this information is listed in U.S. Gallons as well as Liters. I hope this helps, but please don't hesitate to send us an email with any other questions you may have. frontenacoutfitters@gmail.com Cheers,

I have the chance of picking one of these boats up, not had the chance to try it, I'm between 14 & 15 st would this boat be suitable fitting for that type of weight range?

Good evening Spinrek, I assume you are talking stones of weight, which works out to roughly 200 lbs? If so, I think you shouldnt have to much trouble, your height may be a variable, as well as how you carry your weight, but for the average male 5'8" - 6' around 200 lbs, the Tempest 170 is a great boat. Good luck with your purchase and see you on the water!

Can anyone comment on how this boat steers? One review stated that it is a bit hard to turn, even in flat calm water.

As a 17' sea kayak with a little bit of rocker, the Tempest 170 is a boat that tracks very well. The sacrifice when it comes to this type of design is maneuverability (to a degree). However, with a little skill and technique, it can also be fairly responsive and nimble. Those characteristics don't fully come to light until the kayak is edged and more advanced course correction strokes are utilized. That said, I'm not sure the review of it being "hard to turn..." is fully accurate - it just may mean a little more time spent on developing skills in order to make it easier to maneuver!
