My husband saw kids throwing stones at a black bird that wouldn’t fly away. Afraid he rescued him, he realized it was a young raven that couldn’t fly. He brought him home, made him a cage and we named him Edgar. When running around the back yard flapping his arms didn’t teach Edgar to fly, he put Edgar on the bottom drawer and his food on the floor. Edgar learned to glide down to his food by starting at the lowest drawer and moving higher. Once he learned to fly, we would let him out of his cage. He would eat with the horses. Watermelon rind was his favorite. He would also fly up to the overhead wires and sit there with his crow friends. He was the big bird in the middle with the crows around him. One day there was a terrible storm like you can only have in Southern CA. We were both at work and couldn’t get home to get him. He disappeared. We missed him a lot. One day the Santa Ana winds started to blow. And there was Edgar sitting back in the wire surrounded by his crow friends.

On the northern U.S. border, I watched a handful of Common Ravens playing in the stiff wind of one winter day. Temps were hovering around -25°f. Dives, hovering, swooping around each other, touching feet, barrel rolls... it went on for quite a while. I finally had to get back to work but they were still playing. Then one summer day while crossing a big, empty parking lot I heard a Raven talking to itself. It was just walking around by itself there, muttering the most remarkable sounds - vocalizations, clicks, whistling, cackling, and croaks and gurgles. Fantastic birds. Ravens In Winter is a great book, published back in 1989, for anyone really interested. It's got a lot of interesting info on biology and behavior.

Many years ago, when we were stationed in Germany, we lived out in the neighborhood around the military base, and an old German farmer used to plow the field in front of our apartment using a team of draft horses. My hubby had the car, and I needed to get some groceries, so I loaded the children up in the pram, and proceeded down the path through the field to reach the commissary, a frequently used shortcut. Leaving my apartment, I noted that the farmer's field was absolutely coated solid with ravens, evidently eating whatever he'd planted there. As we stepped onto the walking path, every raven stopped what it was doing, and turned to stare at me and the children. They followed me with their eyes, and stayed silent, until I finally stepped off the path onto the paved road next to the commissary. I don't mind telling you, the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds" flashed through my head as I struggled to remain calm, LOL, it was quite unnerving.

Once our sheep pushed their way under the fence and they came to my window squawking to get my attention. Sure enough the sheep had almost made it out to the road. They're my friends but still afraid of me. They let me look at them through my window but not get too close. When I was in the garden working they sat on the power line and they called me mom exactly in the same singsong voice as my children. I looked up at him and he flew away. Which gives Edgar Allen Poe's raven an additional way to knock at the chamber door. I grew up in a very small town in the eastern Oregon desert. When I was about ten years old my older brother came home with a young Raven. My mother loved animals and we had plenty of them and the Raven was welcomed into the family. We named him Edgar and kept him in a cage and fed him raw liver for a few days and then we let him lose. He was free flying after that and flew all over town but came back to our backyard to tell my mother he wanted more liver and she always obliged. He was full of personality. He loved being in our backyard when if was full of kids playing and having fun. He loved that vibe. I'll never forget the time when the kids were all playing and I looked up and saw him sitting on a tree branch, looking down at the festivities and laughing. There is nothing like a Raven laughing. He was obviously loving what he was seeing. I've thought about that moment my whole life. I was just a kid and didn't realize it at the time but as an adult I later realized that I was the one that he bonded with. I remember a game that we played. I would be sitting down and he would be standing on my knee and he would swallow one of my fingers and gobble it down his bill as far as he could and then he would sit there with my finger in his mouth and look into my eyes while I just sat there staring into his. I was trusting him to not hurt me and he was doing the same because if I had reacted and violently pulled my finger out of his mouth I could have easily harmed him. So we just sat there staring into each others eyes trusting each other and bonding. I saw a video on youtube a while back of a man who had a Raven and this raven also gobbled the mans finger and he held it while the man put his arm down to his side and walked with the Raven hanging from his finger. Apparently this is a little known 'thing' that Ravens do.
@PendeltonWhiskey2 ай бұрын
From the backyard, Edgar knew the moment my mother turned towards the refrigerator to get some raw liver for him. He would be outside getting excited and making lots of noise and jumping around several minutes before the back door opened and my mother appeared with his liver. I'm convinced that Ravens are connected to the supernatural world and he knew exactly what was going on in our kitchen. Ravens are prone to mischief. This is because they are very intelligent and need mental stimulus to avoid boredom. He was all over town and I'll never know everything he was up to but over time we heard about some of his activities. He loved to swoop down and take hats off of people's heads and he did that all over town. Unfortunately our little blonde frizzy haired neighbor girl became a favorite target because apparently her hair looked like a hat to Edgar. I saw her running down the alley towards her house screaming and waving her hands in the air fending him off quite a few times. He loved to pull lose shingles off of roofs and drop them into the flower bed. He did this to our next door neighbors old house and I suspect he did the same thing all over town. He loved to go to the truckstop a couple of blocks from our home and he would strut back and forth on the outside ledge watching customers eat their pie. He was very popular there. But he wasn't popular at the nursing home. Ravens have an instinct for death, and Edgar knew which patient was on the verge of death and would perch on their windowsill and stare at them. Not good.

It's totally true that some crows are actually shape-shifted witches. There's a witch that lives in my neighborhood and comes by my house every day. I feed her roasted peanuts in-the-shell, and in exchange she once brought me a big ol' mushroom but usually she just yells spells at me. I think she's still new to witching, though, because nothing unusual has happened yet.

No mention of Ravens flying inverted I don’t know if Crows do that or not. One summer when I was driving a big Truck daily, there was one particular Raven that would fly along for a stretch going around Kaweah (Kaweah is a Yokut word meaning Raven) Lake and would invert a couple times while doing it. Did it pretty much every day for much of the summer. No idea why, but appeared to be having fun. We live just outside Sequoia National Park and have a pair of ravens that visits every day. I’ve never seen a Crow that I’m aware of East of Terminus Dam/Kaweah Lake. But there are large numbers of them west of the foothills.

I've seen videos where they were clearly goofing off flying. They were reenacting their favorite scene in Top Gun. Crows will lead 2 cats to one another to instigate a cat fight. What makes the video even funnier is how one of the crows is trying to watch the fight from really close. He stays around 12-18 inch away even though they a moving around a large area. He was loving it.

Our Ravens are either solitary or out and about with their mate. The only places I've seen Ravens congregate in large numbers is Yellowstone and other large parks. They are big enough and soar well enough from a distance they can look like raptors until you get close and see they are all black.

In Arizona and New Mexico, lots of ravens. I love the ravens ... and the crows. The ravens love to come out and play on the wind as a storm is blowing in. The ravens and hawks hunt the same areas and fly in a similar way, but of course the ravens are black and the hawks are brown, which is the quickest way to tell them apart from a distance. We have crows, too, but I think a lot more ravens. Once I was working outside, and a crow was flying around the area. Suddenly he swooped a little lower and pooped on my head as he went by. I don't think that was an accident! Once I was driving on a residential road and saw a crow sitting in the middle of the road, not flying away as my truck approached. I stopped and got out, picked him up and took him home. He was very calm. After awhile of perching on my shoulder, he flew off. Maybe it was somebody's pet ... or maybe just because they're so smart.

Sad that this never mentioned that Crows and Ravens can mimic speech and sounds. There's an island in Canada, Prince Albert Island or something close like that, where all the Crows on the island can say "Hello!"! Scientists believe that one bird had befriended a male hooman and he always said "Hello" to the Crow and would give it food, especially once it learned to mimic back to the hooman. That Crow then went around "teaching" the other Crows a new way to get snacks. Very intelligent birds! Whispers behind me hand: I still love Ravens more though, js. 🐦⬛🖤

Im probably one of a very few that loves the crow call I don't find it annoying at all but relaxing. When I went camping they would always wake me up very early hover above pine trees waiting for scraps when cooking on a campfire. So the next time I went camping I went to the local feed store or hardware store that sold bags of corn and sunflower seeds and a bag of bird feed. I waited till they would wake me up and before I started my breakfast I threw some of those that I bought and they didn't waste time swooping down to get what they could. After everything was gone they made that call and it was as if they were saying thank you and flew off. I started my breakfast and threw scraps down but I guess they were full. I started to miss them and the calls after they flew, but the next time I look forward to seeing them again. Hope they are doing well.
