I have epilepsy and I love all the lights you all have on this special day, the only thing is that sometimes I’m afraid to look at all of the fireworks (lights) going off sometimes because I’m nervous that I’ll have a seizure and I’ll ruin everyone’s good time, I have faced the fact that epilepsy is horrifying especially if you haven’t seen someone have a grand-mal seizure before. I just wanted to say I love to stare in amazement at the amazing light you have but it’s very upsetting having to worry if something will happen to me while I’m enjoying myself just looking at beautiful lights because if something happens I usually just end up in a hospital or back in my bed not knowing what happened and I just get so depressed because all of the medical things going on. I hope you all have a good holiday I really like it😊

Diwali is certainly one of the biggest, brightest and most important festivals of India. While Diwali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most significant spiritual meaning behind it is the awareness of the inner light or the atman. The celebration of Diwali as the "victory of good over evil" refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance. While the story behind Diwali and the manner of celebration of the festival differ greatly depending on the region, the essence of the festival remains the same: the celebration of life, its enjoyment, and goodness. The word Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit term "Deepavali", which translates to "Rows of lamps". Based on the Hindu lunar calendar, Diwali falls between October and November on an Amavasya, or moonless night. Celebrated as the victory of good over evil, the festival is associated with the legend of the Hindu god, Lord Ram's return to his kingdom, Ayodhya, after 14 years in exile. The Demon king, Ravan of Lanka, had abducted Lord Ram's consort Sita, only to invite his own death as a result. Lord Ram, along with his brother Laxman, and an army of monkeys defeated and killed Ravan, and returned to his kingdom with Sita. According to mythology, the people of Ayodhya lit up clay lamps, known as diyas, to welcome him on his return from exile. The biggest festival of India also gives rise to an abundance of Diwali milas, or fairs and carnivals, to support the massive shopping sprees associated with the festival. Girls and women dress up during the festival. They wear colorful clothing, and new jewelry, and their hands are decorated with henna designs. Decorative items, garlands, diyas, and crackers are on the hot list of all the shoppers. This time of the year also marks the highest sale of traditional Indian sweets as sweets are exchanged when families and friends come together to celebrate. Markets are adorned with colorful Diwali decorations. Small time potters who sell clay diyas have their highest annual sales around this time. Local bazaars offer an array of designer clay diyas, urban lamps and colorful lanterns. Women have a great time shopping and decking up for the festivities along with gathering the items required for the rituals. Many tourists also visit markets to experience the festive rush during Diwali. Diwali also marks the end of the harvest season for farmers and the closing of the financial year for businessmen. Colorful idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh are seen everywhere in the markets. Hindus strongly believe Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, visits their houses if it is kept clean and lit with diyas on this day. Vijay is a manager at a farm house and belongs to a typical Hindu household. He and his wife, Rajvala, and their children: Visha, Vishalli and Vishal, celebrate Diwali the traditional way. Diwali is a five-day affair and kicks off with Dhanteras. 'Dhan' means wealth; hence this day is considered auspicious for buying items related to prosperity like utensils or gold. Vijay and his family also plan to buy something in keeping with the customs of Dhanteras. Increasing inflation in India has made it a little difficult for everyone to buy gold. Vijay’s family have decided to buy some utensils from one of the nearby shops. It is a good day for the shop keepers to make a lot of money. Vijay will have to bargain a lot to get the best deal.

Hinduism: Diwali is a festival of lights: Diwali literally means a row of lamps. 'Deepa' - means light or "lamp" 'Aavali' - means a "row" So a 'diya' is centralized in Diwali which has always been made up of recyclable material like clay. Religious aspect: celebration of victory of good over evil; light over darkness. Celebration of return of Lord Ram who had slain the evil. To celebrate his return and make it easier for him to find the road back, people lit diyas. People were happy to have their idealistic King return who never cared for power, possessions or self-interests. He lived for others and always put his kingdom first. The idea to spread the light of positivity in the world despite the darkness of negativity. Some worship Goddess of wealth and treat the day as beginning of new financial year. Clear off old debts and start afresh. This calls for prosperity and fortune by lighting their homes and keeping the doors open to welcome the Goddess. South India Hinduism: the day God Krishna overcame and destroyed the evil demon King Narakasura. In yet another symbolic victory of good over evil. Scientific reason: During this time of the year when the sun, earth and the moon are aligned in such a way that there is a change in the climate which leads to colder darker months ahead. There is also higher gravitational pull which can cause increase in tides. Multiplication of insects which destroy crops (as this is the season for some regions to harvest new crops) and also cause health problems. When you light lamps they are attracted to those lights and fall into the lamps. The oil traditionally used to light the diyas is called Iluppa Ennei which has some medicinal properties. The oil burned during diwali doesnt produce much pollution. We also clean houses thoroughly so that insects are reduced and to welcome guests into the home. Fireworks came much later into the tradition which represented also light but this is harmful for the environment and should be moderated. Jainism: Anniversay or liberation of Mahavira's (founder of modern Jainism) soul. It is celebrated same time as Hindu Diwali. For Jains, it mark's the end of the year and celebrates the achievement of moksha (nirvana/freedom) by Mahavir. Dipalikaya means light leaving the body thus people light lamps to mark the occasion. Sikhism: The foundation of The Golden Temple in 1577 was laid on Diwali. Second reason, Bandi Chhor Divas. "Day of liberation" (Prisoner release day). On the day of Diwali, the Guru Hargobind (Sixth Guru) released from jail by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir who also freed 52 other Hindu kings with the Guru. It is celebrated in a similar manner by lighting homes and Gurdwaras such as Golden Temple to welcome the Guru home. Celebration of a Guru who lived for others and risked his own life to save others. Wish you a Happy Diwali for whichever reason you choose to celebrate, whether that is end of evil; illuminating the darkness; harvesting crops; celebrating liberation; attaining moksha or the time for self-reflection. Let us light that inner 'diya' to find the purpose and live like Lord Ram or Guru Hargobind who lived in the service of others to give happiness, prosperity and peace. 🕯💡🔥🎇🎆

It is best experienced in a small town or village in Rajasthan or Uttar pradesh, but a large city can also be an interesting and intense experience, although it can get a little distasteful due to the noise and smoke. But come on over - India is always intense and entertaining. It gets under your skin... in a nice way!
