In 1972 in Victoria, Canada, a rookie policeman wrote a poem for his girlfriend while driving home in his police car. Dave "the Cop" Richardson gave the poem to his friend David Foster, a young aspiring young musician looking for material for his new band, SKYLARK. Foster passed it along to Skylark guitarist Doug Edwards who set it to music. It was the first song Edwards had ever composed.
WILDFLOWER is one of the most performed songs in the history of Canadian popular music. Over 30 years it has sold multiple million copies in more than sixty versions. It's been honored with a BMI Millionaire's Award and SOCAN Classic and Crystal Awards. It is the song that launched David Foster's career.

Dave Richardson was a Canadian police officer at the time he wrote the lyrics for this song. The words were originally a poem written for his girl friend, which he passed on to his close friend David Foster. Richardson explained his lyrical inspiration in an interview: "In 1970 I was dating a nurse, whom I would eventually marry in 1971 (it only lasted four years, though - we were both not ready for such a commitment). One night I went to pick her up at her apartment, as we had planned on going out. When she opened the door I saw that she was upset to the point of tears. She still had a housecoat on and had her hair wrapped in a towel after a shower. She told me that two elderly ladies she had been caring for in the hospital had died that day at work, and she felt terribly sad about it, as she had come to know them fairly well over a period of time. Anyway, she more or less vented her feelings and I just listened. After she was finished, she thanked me for listening, and said she would get ready for our date. She went into the bedroom and closed the door, and I sat and watched TV waiting for her to come out. When she didn't return, I knocked on the door but she didn't answer, so I went in to find her fast asleep on the bed, still in her housecoat and with the towel still wrapped around her head. I guess she was just exhausted after her emotional day. So, I put a blanket over her, being careful not to wake her, and went home and wrote the song in about fifteen minutes or so. It was absolutely inspired. I have always felt that all I did was hold the pen in my hand, and that God did the writing. The 'Be careful how you touch her, for she'll awaken' part, refers to when I put the blanket over her. 'The way she's always paying, for a debt she never owes…' - It wasn't her fault that the two ladies had died, and yet she felt so badly for them that she was crying.

I brought my wife’s urn home today. She loved this song, but it also said so much about her. She lived in constant pain and endured many periods struggling to breath. I cared for her for several years and watch her deteriorate till she could no longer cope. Yet she always had a smile for all she encountered. She truly paid for a debt she never owed. I don't know how other people interpret this song, however when I was a young girl this song used to make me cry because it reminded of the abuse my mother went through at the hands of my father. I used to feel helpless and wanted desperately to be there for her. Unfortunately due to her own brokenness she pushed me away until I could no longer endure the pain and never saw her again. She has since passed years ago, but I still love her very much, miss her and cry especially when I hear this song.

Being born in 1960 this is one of the songs that were the soundtrack of our lives. LIFE and LOVE is so fragile like a "wildflower". So easily run over and crushed by the inhumanity of NO LOVE or RESPECT for others. So many are cut down for NO reason. I have HOPE for UNDERSTANDING. Each one knows the answer, but NO one wants to "see" the "wildflower".😁

Just read your text. That song is musically genius. I totally agree and it came out when I was very young and I was adopted into a home that I probably shouldn't been adopted into and then that song came out and it was like they hacked my brain to put every emotion and circumstance I went through after I was grown enough to leave and then I read your post and it will always be "our song" from this day forward. That's the same line that helped me through. I always payed for a debt I didn't owe too so I know how that hit you too. Cancer has taken every family member in my house so far and I've lost way too many people to suicide which to me is worse than cancer because there's never preparation or closure in that instance. You're never the same losing anyone to suicide. You can't rationalize it and you can't ask for a reason or any kind of explanation at all. I'm now sharing "my" song with you. I'll never listen to this song the same again. God Bless your daughter and the rest of your family.❤❤❤❤❤

I hope I don't burst any bubbles here, but although my [then young] friend David Foster was the leader of "Skylark" in those days, he didn't write the song. I was the "rookie cop" who wrote the lyrics, and Doug Edwards - who plays the song's beautifully haunting guitar - wrote the music. I know I speak for Doug Edwards, David Foster, and the other Skylark members when I say "Thank you" to everyone who wrote such warm comments about the song and how it has affected so many lives so positively. Blessings to all of you. Gratefully yours, Dave R.

Back when Black folk were making beautiful music. Before it was hijacked by the hate, violence, and racism provoking whatever they call rapp. 90%.hateful. NOT ART. But its changing back. I hope I live long enough to see it. Tevares, Stylistic, Temtations, Gladys Knight, Ohio Players, Earth,Wind & fire, Skylark, Jackson 5, Diana Ross, Soul Train, Dick Clark, Casey Casim, & SO SO many other. Thankful to have lived through those beautiful times. Best music ever. Even the really good stuff today resembles the music of those times.

I've just read the sad news of Dave's passing. Wildflower has touched so many people deeply. It's such an enduring classic that I've had the opportunity to grow with the song. As a young teen I enjoyed the purely musical elements and arrangements, but over time as I matured, I came to not only appreciate the lyrics, but experience them at a deeper, visceral level. RIP Dave, and thank you leaving us with such a wonderful legacy.

I was a tiny boy when released and remember this on the radio so vividly as one of the most beautiful songs to this day! Then in my early adulthood I learned this was one of David Foster, the master pop musician's first projects and why I always loved his music. I got to meet him a few years ago backstage at his concert David Foster & Friends II in Fort Lauderdale, my hometown, and was able to tell him how much this simple song meant to me! Its simply a classic-when you hear music like this and similarly heard today "Goodbye yellow Brick Road" by Elton from the early 70's same time frame it was made as WILDFLOWER and we realize nothing like these are made today! It was a magical time for Rock, Pop & Soul! One of the Best Songs Ever!

hookman777, what an amazing & simply awesome story, what a memory to cherish for you!! i love goodbye yellow brick road, as well. i bought the "45" of it from an 'oldies' record store when i was 17 in 1988...as a 46 year old woman, looking back i can see my love for ballads started pretty much by 14 for me, when i was old enough to feel anguish & heartache over friends and BOYS, of course, but how sad is it, i never could have imagined back then, 30+ years ago now, that my whole life i would continue to go back to these very same songs STILL because absolutely NOTHING better ever came along!! it was a truly magical time in music & i get very defensive when people sometimes refer to 70s music as "sappy" or say how awful the music was then - these comments usually come from "really cool, super masculine, hip kinda DUDES, so consider the source - hands down these are some of the best treasures we have & i don't think anything will ever compare to them or replace them, certainly nothing i have heard beyond the 1980s, AT BEST!
