Victory gardens is what my grandparents generation did. Never spent money on it. Stick seeds in the ground and enjoyed vegetables that was needed for their families

U can make garden beds without the wood .I got 6 beds 4ft. By 40 ft long and not 1 piece of wood or board was used it was hard work for me being I'm 72years old , but I got it done .I cann from my garden as well as freeze and eat from my garden . I work my garden rate after my last harvest and hand weed every day the soit isn't frozen about 20 minutes a day ,it gives my fresh air and helps me to keep in top of stuff good luck to all of us gardeners .

At my off grid cabin I have a propane fridge freezer but propane is expensive so I got an iceco vl60/65 portable fridge freezer it uses a/c or d/c with my 2000 watt solar generator and 2 100 watt solar panels I can run it indefinitely pretty much so no more ice you may want to check out the iceco brand it’s an awesome product

I didnt know the pallet info so thanks for sharing that. When your ready for other crops local hardware stores or Ace hardware usually carry seeds by the scoop. Much cheaper then packets. Someone mentioned deer and other animal pest garlic, onions and other select herbs can keep them away. I tried wood but got eat up by termites and woodboaring pest. Now I look for cedar wood logs. Just a suggestion if that becomes an issue for you or someone else reading. The mailbox....got me wondering if it could have been someones roadside produce or egg stand? In the country make friends of your neighbors you never know when you'll need each others help. ❤ happy adventures and homesteading.

Raised beds are nice, but remember you can plant a garden right in the ground -- the old fashioned way -- and top dress with compost each season to restore fertility. This is probably the cheapest way for most people. Also growing all your plants from seed is by far the least expensive route. And if you grow heirloom and open pollinated varieties, you can save some of your own seed too. You might want to add chicken wire or mesh to keep rodents out of your compost.

I have tried square foot gardening. My plants never grew as big or as healthy as they do with my big regular row garden. I have a 'no till' garden and my plants grow huge and do very well - even with minimal watering.

Free seeds and cuttings too from veg and fruit we buy. I threw out some guava seeds from a Thai guava we ate and a few germinated. I just kept 1 . It grew into a fairly big tree and gives us several fruits every week. Much sweeter than store bought though a bit smaller. I grow peppers and herbs too from what we buy. We have papaya trees from seeds of fruit we ate too.

Good morning from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan! Your property and surrounding area is beautiful. I can see why you choose it! We just moved to the UP in order to get away somewhere quiet and affordable. We have been here for 8 months now. We bought a livable fixer upper for cash without seeing it in person. I am liking what you did with the raised beds and the compost bins and potato boxes. We have a lot of down tree branches and wood etc. that was left on the property. One of our biggest problems is keeping the wildlife from eating it!

Kayti and Asher, I am so excited for you both. Your property is beautiful and those views! I'm guessing you bought somewhere in S/W Virginia. Have you ever heard of Joe Salatin? He has written many books and has a very big farm right outside of Staunton, VA. Look him up, he is a wealth of information. Also, my other favorite KZbin channel (besides you) is called The Hollar Homestead. It is about Ben and Meg Hollar and their family of soon to be six kids. They sold everything they had in California and drove all over the USA for about a year until they finally found their homestead in NC. Ben can do everything it seems like and Meg is amazing too. Their homestead had electricity and a derilict trailer on it when they first moved there. Little by little they have built up their homestead. The video they put out just yesterday was them building garden beds out of logs just like you two did. I'm sure their channel could be a wealth of knowledge for you. I made my raised beds from fallen trees has well but I did it stockade style pounding them into the ground instead of log cabin style

Having a dog helps us with the deer. They seem to mostly avoid the yard as long as we have one. We've been with and without and we sure noticed a difference.

Great and your kids will so love the property , especially the young one . Watch your back lifting heavy things. Look into lifting techniques. Don't forget to put water on the cardboard before putting the soil on it. And when you still have leaves put the leaves already on them

Beautiful area. I've driven through Virginia on I-77 and noticed the scenery. What area of Virginia? Few things I'd suggest---pallets can be treated---the chemicals can leach into the soil. Also that wood will decay fast--you might have to redo it every couple years it'll deteriorate so fast. I would recommend getting some hemlock from a local sawmill. It's not that expensive but will last many more years so I think you'd likely recoup the cost. Sawmills are usually much less expensive than lumber yards. I'd check marketplace. In regard to soil--I've built beds using old cow/horse manure. If it's been sitting awhile, it should be fine. Just get some top soil on top. Again, I'd look on marketplace for old manure--usually free. Then you can supplement with some compost for buy a few bags of top soil/compost for the top layer. If the manure is old, it won't burn the roots.

That is what I would do dig up soil out of your forest. You can't plant in straight compost anyway. That being said pepper's do love straight compost.Lol well at least at my house. Then see if any of your local municipalities make compost. Down here in Charleston, South Carolina they collect yard waste and make compost at one of the dump stations. Making boxes out of wood is excellen Also look at making/growing on hugelkultur mounds

I realize after hearing from other states that we do have a low real-estate tax here in VA. Their $400 now is bc it's raw land. Goes up once you put a dwelling on it. Even so, we are on almost 11 acres with apprx 2,000 sq ft house and it's around $2,700/year. Still not a nice thing to pay when you own your house debt free.... but we have to pretend the money is being used to help our local county do good things.

The grass looks really rich which must mean the soil underneath will be pretty bloody good as well. Why did you not just dig a veg plot and start the compost by chucking the turfs upside down on the bottom of the compost bin?? 🤔😄

The grass is pasture grass and extremely thick and lush. It’s nearly impossible to cut through by hand. It needs to be tilled. And then probably tilled again 😆 But the soil underneath is pretty amazing! If I can ever get to it 😅

We plant about 1/8 of an acre garden and grow strawberries, peas, beans, tomatoes, peppers, corn, lettuce, cabbage, cucumbers, watermelon, etc. Have some plum trees and grapevines. Never used a raised bed. Curious what the advantage is besides not having to till.

We honestly just haven’t had the chance to prep the ground at all. I am not sure how good the soil is here yet. I plan on doing a ground garden too (and much more in the coming years), but raised beds are easier right now. It also cuts down on weeding, helps with drainage, and will make harvesting potatoes easier.

It’s really not an area where someone would steal from us. But the property is also fenced and gated (the previous owner had cows🐮😂 ). If someone did steal our food, I guess they must be really hungry so 🤷‍♀️ We have a lot of tentative plans for the property and that spot just worked the best, plus it was sunny and not too sloped. For water, we have a few ideas, one being water catchment … but we need to build a roof(s) first. It’s all going to be a process 😂

My husband buried some metal barrels in the ground up to a few inches above ground level by the house he layered straw potatoes more straw more potatoes til the barrel was full then a block on the lid to keep critters out. Make sure the potatoes are dry before putting in barrel.

Not really. Black bears tend to stay away from humans. They aren’t aggressive … unless it’s a mother bear with her cubs, but then I don’t blame her and you just give them the space they need. I would honestly be a little excited if a saw one lol

@@raisingwildflowers they have been known to kill humans like Kelly Ann Walz who was killed by her pet black bear. I would be terrified if I saw one approaching. They sometimes come looking for food. In fact many wild animals can turn aggressive when hungry and in search of food . One house I lived in was near a nature reserve. Monkeys were constant nuisance visitors. They raided my garden and even ate the eggs of birds that were nesting on my trees. They got aggressive when we tried to chase them away.

If you expect to be off grid for the rest of this year I recommend a cooler similar to this. You can run it off solar panels. Obviously an upfront cost, but way worth it over time. Especially for future road trips.
