Always take a bag AND a blanket. As Claire says, a bag can cover you and keeps your hands free. Add in the blanket and you can make a very basic shetler and it is perfect to signal with. In the Lake District, always pack for the heaviest of weather as it can hit you in minutes!

@@wildgingerruns yes, definitely! I have a few friends doing the 100, and I think I'll sign up through the lottery for one of them for next year. And that's great about the windslayer! I still think it's the best audio set-up for these things, let me know how you get on 😊🙏

I've never used it but I know someone who used a space blanket under their clothes and it worked great for them! They walked to an extraction point after the race was called off due to extreme weather.

I use a Fenix head torch and an UltraAspire waist torch. I use one on low and the other on medium so the batteries run out at different times.

I would not use pure sugar without electrolytes as a source of energy. What I can recommend from long-term experience is Styrkr and Hammer nutrition. Yes, it has fewer calories, but they last longer than pure sugar. The only downside is that you have to drink a lot.
@wildgingerruns Жыл бұрын
Sounds great, I will eat some savoury food too for electrolytes, like crisps etc, but that does remind me to get some electrolytes to pop in one of my bottles, thanks!

Spare torch for me, rather than spare batteries! Snickers (or similar) bars are a good shout for the emergency food as tasty after the race... Good luck with the 50 - you might overtake me on the 100(5).

Good luck in your race Claire! I've never seen a race here in the US that has a mandatory kit list - what a bother. Seems like they should trust you to know what you might need. Is your race expected to be really cold? It's been so hot lately, you might consider some hot-weather gear (like an ice bandanna) too. And spray some Permethrin on your clothes and buff to keep those annoying mosquitoes and ticks away. You might consider Injinji toe socks for your blisters. They have some thin liner-socks that you wear under regular socks. I never get blisters anymore (knock on wood). Have a great time!

May have to do with liability insurance to cover organisers plus awareness due to 2021 Chinese ultramarathon that rescued 87 runners and lost 21 runners due to freak weather after a relatively warm day. Those who had emergency blankets said they were torn to shreds. Others were saved by a shepherd who took them to a cave he knew near by and lit a fire for them.
@wildgingerruns Жыл бұрын
Thanks Arleen! Yes in the UK there is usually a mandatory kit list for any long or remote races, I think we might have higher health and safety standards for insurance than other countries. Thanks for all the tips that's great! Defo aiming for zero blisters with my new shoe, insole and sock combo... let's see how it goes! Claire

What do you think about getting jackets big enough to go over your pack? I have an inov8 jacket bought when I didn’t think I’d ever be filling my pack up so much.. so now struggles to go over a full pack.. and IF UTS had actually rained I’d have had to put it under my pack.. but thinking of the hole faf of taking your bag off n on.. Thanks for the vid.. not doing this one yet.. but your kit vids are always interesting and helpful 👍🏼

Yes, this is very much a thing I do, I forgot though when ordering this Montane Minimus Lite and it's quite a snug fit... the bag is bulging so it defo won't go over it plus zip up, I do usually go for a size larger to facilitate this and think it's an excellent idea. Montane back pack over the harrier 10L one? I've got salomon adv 5 but need a bigger one
@wildgingerruns Жыл бұрын
Hmmm, the Harrier 10L one out atm in my opinion has side pocket zips too small to get your hands in, they are working on the next one right now and hopefully that will be sorted. So atm I'd go for Salomon Adv Skin 12L or Montane Gecko 12+. Those are what I currently use. Hope that helps! Claire

You will need a stronger whistle. The ones on running packs aren't loud enough.

Your smart phone. Will it last the time you are out on the course? There are plenty of places on the route where there is no signal which will use battery whilst searching for networks. Do you need to take a battery pack to charge whilst out? I have a non smart phone Nokia always switched on for ultras where the battery lasts more than the length of any event I run. Just saying
