Animals of massive proportions are not hard to eat for a heron because they use a specially adapted eating technique that helps them swallow large prey whole. The grey heron is a species of meat-eating predatory wading birds that live on and around water; they are waterbirds that don't swim but wade through the water. The heron is a hunting bird that uses its long, sharp beak to catch animals while silently and patiently stalking its intended prey; they are water waders with long legs traversing their aquatic dom The heron attacks and feeds on other animals because they are carnivorous predators; they are a top avian predator and are exceptional hunters of all kinds of prey animals that live and breed worldwide. Herons have an incredible instinct to attack and eat other animals. This type of feeding behaviour has evolved over millions of years to enable them to have an extensive menu of wild protein-rich animal meat food. The herons are flying birds with a very diverse diet of meat from hunting and eating other animals. They especially like dining on water-based waterbirds, waterfowl baby birds, rats, rodents, other small mammals and birds and insects, and a wide variety of marine and aquatic creatures living in and around saltwater and freshwater. Food eaten without chewing is how the heron and all birds eat their food because they have no teeth for crushing, and dining on big or small portions by swallowing in gulps is how they feed. The heron can be seen actively hunting and eating animal babies throughout the breeding seasons, especially when they live and breed in the herons' natural habitats. Herons will hunt and eat smaller birds and bird babies, hatchlings, nestlings, and bird eggs by regularly raiding throughout the bird breeding seasons when the heron dines and eats The herons are avians living and breeding in almost every habitat close to water throughout the world's coastal and inland waterways.

I think all that dipping serves multiple reasons: 1) the heron use the duck's buoyancy in the water to allow it to gradually position the duck's head into its mouth, 2) drown the ducklings. 3) to make the duck wet enough to slide down its throat. 4) drinks in the water to drown the duckling that it swallowed live. 5) because its a habitual thing they do with or without a prey.

There is nothing "brutal" - as one commentator puts it - about this. This is life. Difficult to watch, yes, but an interesting aspect of avian behaviour and it shows just how versatile the grey heron is. And for all those who condemn the heron for doing what comes naturally in order to survive... I recommend you pay a visit to a poultry processing plant. That's where the true horror and brutality lies.

Was that a ferruginous duck for the first? They are quite a rarity here in the U.K.. Nature doesn’t respect whether a bird is rare or common, and did the heron kill the second bird? It looked a bit bloated like it had been dead a while. I’ve seen one make very short work of a stoat or weasel, my wife who can’t watch raw nature on the TV etc was fascinated when she saw it in real life. I saw one coming off second to a marsh harrier on Sunday, I thought it was two harriers dancing at first but when I looked out of my scope one was a heron upside down but too far away for an image though. Great footage, very well done indeed I just hope the heron doesn’t have young because there’s no way they’ll manage that lot when he coughs it back up.

DarkLizerdGuy Its not up for debate, birds are most certainly dinosaurs. Thats like not believing bats are mammals because they fly and look a bit different. Next time you’re close to a bird, look at their legs, they’re covered in scales. Also most dinosaurs had feathers along with scales, just like modern birds do. Birds are more closely related to crocodiles than any other reptiles, since dinosaurs and Crocodilians both evolved from the same group.

DarkLizerdGuy Okay first of all, taxonomy is based on genetic relationships not physical characteristics, we haven’t based animal on physical characteristics since the 1800s. Second of all, i used bats as an example against grouping animals due to physical characteristics since its a great example of why thats a flawed way of viewing taxonomy. I understand that taxonomy is a difficult concept thats taught poorly in high school, so i get why you’re confused. Dinosaurs aren’t just Trex and Sauropods, they’re an incredibly vast group of animals that encompassed Hundreds of thousands different species. From tiny dinosaurs the size of mice, to the largest land animals we are aware ever exist. They’re just as diverse as mammals are today. We know birds are dinosaurs for a number of reasons, most importantly due to their genes. But thats too complicated of a subject to try to explain in a KZbin comment. The easiest way for you to understand is the homology of their bone structure and also the fossil record, the hip bone structure of birds is shared by no other group of animals except for a certain group of dinosaurs. Also there is a clear fossil record of the evolution of birds from bipedal dinosaurs, they’re beyond enough fossils showing the progression of bird evolution through the species.

@@Bolt99K fossil record is not an evidence for anything , also when it comes to genetic relationships you need a living breathing creature to prove it , like you said, Dinosaurs are more then just tyrannos or sarubods , they are a vast and diverse species of animals , but I can't simply look at a Triceratops and think it looks like a golden eagle , especially knowing it eat plants , the whole idea of birds = dinosaurs is a huge stretch, even if it was the case, you can't simply go to a pet store and ask them to add lions to the number of animals you could adapt caz they are elated to house cats , that just stupid , again dinosaurs are dinosaurs and birds are birds

Go to an aquarium supply store that has the plastic statues of herons. Put it out by the fish pond but move it every few days so the real heron doesn't get wise to the fact that it's not real. Herons are extremely territorial and once it sees the statue it will stay away. I had to get one of the statues to put out by my ponds and it works wonders.
