uh oh, Hippos do eat meat. However, a 2015 study by the Mammal Review shows hippos “occasionally” feed on animal carcasses, a more omnivorous behavior. Hippos are known to attack and eat animals like wildebeests, zebras and kudus, as well as other hippos in cases of cannibalism, according to AZ Animals.Sep 27, 2022

One of the animals Steve feared the most were hippos. If the dude who was comfortable wrestling full grown Crocs and gators feared hippos, then you can bet I'm not nearing one either
@darthplagueis136 ай бұрын
Well, crocs and gators, whilst large and dangerous, are very predictable animals. Their master plan for survival hasn't changed much in the last few hundreds of million years, so once you learn how they roll, they're unlikely to surprise you. Hippos by comparison are a lot more active and intelligent, not to mention a lot faster and stronger, which makes them a lot more dangerous to interact with.
@KathyPrendergast-cu5ci6 ай бұрын
Crocodiles because of the way nature designed them are easier to subdue than a hippo. Can't see even the strongest human "wrestling" a full-grown hippo. 😂

@@darthplagueis13also its important to note that a crocodile bite, while painful and surely not pretty, is something most people survive. A hippo on the other hand will literally just oneshot you without any possible counterplay. If it snaps, your chance of survival is extremely close to zero.

I feel like it bears mentioning that hippos, like many other herbivores, aren't exactly picky eaters and won't shun a bite of free protein when it comes their way. Some people like to think that being a herbivore means the animal is basically acting like a vegan, but in truth, these things are more about how an animal mostly acts and what it is adapted for, not absolute describtions of their behavior and diet. And hippos especially do sometimes just prey on things, to the point where there's some discussion about if they shouldn't be considered omnivores instead.

I would love a video of you trying to find these lost birds. It's truly horrible that species can be forced to the brink of extinction because of us humans. Rhys Buckingham is one man I have watched trying extremely hard to hear or see a South Island Kokako, and I'm sure many others are trying to rediscover lost birds in New Zealand that could help you and your team. I love that you're trying to rediscover these lost animals, as it brings back hope that these species may still exist. Great video as well, you know your stuff. Cheers from Aus!

This is great & I hope you do a lot more of these. The confidence & attitude in those little turtles is hilarious. The honey badgers of turtles lol Shoebill storks are some of the most badass birds. It's beyond impressive how capable & agile hippos are in water. They literally run underwater in a way. Then add in their crazy territorial/defensive behavior & you got yourself a recipe for one insane creature. *I've always joked around saying how I would love to see us one day somehow make a machine that allows us to see thru different animals eyes. It wouldn't be complete until we can get a sense of what and how these creatures brains and bodies sense their surroundings tho. It's obviously a completely sci-fi idea but it's just coming from a place of pure curiosity.

I’ve seen videos and experts talk about hippos actually being omnivorous. There’s video of one chasing a croc off a gazelle that it was trying to eat only to then consume the gazelle itself. And not just hippos but other animals labeled as herbivores are omnivores as well. Deer for one example, what it comes down to is opportunity.
@rhondeau91756 ай бұрын
the term you're looking for is "facultative", if herbivore is 0. and carnivore is 100, with omnivore being 50, facultatives are the in betweens. A facultative herbivore is willing to eat meat, but doesn't hunt. Things like deer, giraffes, horses and cows, goats. These are Facultative herbivores. Hippos, like i commented elsewhere, are Facultative Herbivores with an argument to be made that they're just omnivores. Also, damn well know you watched that Casual Geographic video, didn't you?

I've never seen an Orca in captivity because my family never went to places like Sea World (we went to a local aquarium every summer when I was a kid, but it didn't have large animals like the larger sharks, Orcas, other dolphins, etc.). This summer, I finally got to see Orcas. In the wild. We were in Juneau on a whale watching tour. We saw a humpback whale, and that was cool. The guide kept talking about humpbacks because she said only 1 in 10 trips of whale watching there would see Orcas. Suddenly, a male Orca and a baby Orca appeared. She thought that was awesome because one of the other guides had bragged that they saw one Orca that day. Well, we ended up seeing more Orcas, then more, then more. We got stuck in a pod of 12 wild Orcas including seeing the matriarch and that one baby. The baby was having a blast. He or she would do rolls and all that. US law had it to where we couldn't really move since we had to have the motor off because we were so close. There were 4 other whale watching boats that got stuck because the Orcas were going at a leisurely pace and kept approaching the boats, especially the biggest one (ours was smaller so we were closer to the water). The boat driver said Orcas love the boats, especially the rudders. They find them amusing. They finally swam away, and we didn't get to see any more humpbacks (we did see Dall's porpoises too though). That's okay because the Orcas were really cool.
