Its interesting hearing the zookeepers talk about how ferocious the Polar Bears would be to even staff, even in their well fed docile environment. For one, you just dont often hear animal handlers talk about the inherent dangers of the animals, mostly with crocs and venomous snakes you hear that, but Grizzly Bear handlers are all over YT sticking their heads in their mouths. Secondly, for me, my GF is from AK and her father has been taken out with Natives to harvest Balene from whales and the Natives can be on one side of the whale harvesting blubber and Balene with Polar Bears on the opposite side just enjoying the free meal.

I've ridden a Bactrian camel once as a kid. It was so high up; I felt like I was on an elephant! And although I've always known bears are omnivores, but polar bears are definitely carnivores in the wild, it's interesting that they feed them fruit and vegetables and so basically omnivores too, and looks like they really like lettuce! And wow, the keepers saying they would not ever want to get in a situation where they could be in the polar bear's pen despite working with them every day, because they are so confident that she wouldn't hesitate to eat them, that's quite the reality check! Cute ≠ friendly! Good to know!

@Dustin-r8p2 ай бұрын
They are! Hyper carnivorous just means that more than 70% of their diet is meat; however, that doesn't mean all of it is! :)
@joeskeeboo13652 ай бұрын
@Dustin-r8p oh! 🤣 alright, bet, lmao! Does that mean that when they do find vegetation in the wild they like, they'll graze a bit? P.s. thanks for the comment! It's awesome to have a genuine convo on the platform 😁
@theflyingdutchguy98702 ай бұрын
wild polar bears only eat meat because thats all thats available to them. but they are basically brown bears with some adaptations for extreme cold. i am guessing that they dont have the money to only feed them seals.
@dustinslav9832 ай бұрын
More than happy to chat about pretty well any animal haha! So, in the colder months when sea ice is available, the bears will eat primarily meat. When that ice melts and they become landlocked, they lose access to seals and forage on a variety of things, including berries! Edit: apparently I have different KZbin accounts on my desktop and phone but I am the same dustin. 😅
@Demion839 күн бұрын
They're often hyper carnivorous in the wild out of necessity, but it needs to be remembered they are fundamentally brown bears and are not far removed at all (even readily interbreed in the wild).
