In this 4K Wildlife Photography documentary photographer Morten Hilmer takes you behind the scenes when he travels to Norway to photograph the wildlife in the wild Nordic winter. Surprised by a blizzard it is hard just to find the Musk oxen, and nature photography becomes a challenge.
-------------------------------------------------
••• ABOUT THIS EPISODE •••
-------------------------------------------------
Wildlife Photography can be a challenge in itself, and it definitely doesn't help when the temperature drops to below minus 15 degrees Celsius and all the gear becomes very cold. On the pulk, I have my camera equipment and everything needed when i am hiking in the wild norwegian mountains to spend some days in these amazing surroundings. that gives me the freedom to stay close to the animals to observe their behaviour.
This short 4K nature documentary is about Wildlife photography, travel, hiking, outdoor, camping and how to photograph wildlife in the winter but most important, it is about freedom, adventure, respect for the animals and the great experiences nature gives.
Nothing is better than waking up in the morning, having a coffee while the sun is rising over the snow covered mountains - wow.

You hike through a snow storm, haul out your camera, check the front of the glass and give your gear a little love pat and carry on. Now that is love of nature, love of the environment and love of your gear! Amazing, Morten.

Thank you for replying and I can't wait to see what you will present next year. I am amazed that your camera's and batteries hold up in this weather. My main photography camera's are a Canon 1D MK111 and 5D Mk11 but have recently added a Panasonic GH4 to progress my video and editing skills. There is so much to learn from your work and I am very grateful.

Morten, I know that this was filmed over a year ago, but I am hooked on your channel. What I keep thinking of is how much dedication you put into making these videos. For instance, just watching a scene of you trekking across the frame, since you are by yourself, you have to go outside the frame so as to not disturb the snow and set up your video camera, make note of where the it is framed then go back and make your trek across the frame, then go fetch your video camera. The same goes for capturing different video angles in the same scene, where you have to stop and reposition the video camera and continue the dialogue, as well as sprinkling in the landscape to help us get that sense of place. It all seems so professional as if someone else is shooting it. I'm not sure everyone truly thinks about this and appreciates all the effort to make the film so engaging, like we are your friends. I get fully engaged in your adventure and learning. The pictures are the cherry on top. I haven't watched all your videos yet, but plan to. If you haven't already done so, how about a video about your process or thoughts on your video filming and production process. While I think that we all know that it is not just the technical skills of your videos but the content and passion you add, it would be nice to know from the filming side. Thanks again for sharing so much of yourself and your multitude of skills. I am a huge fan!

Part 2 did not disappoint! Superb again. I have no idea how you do it.. takes some balls to be out alone in such environments. I know I couldn’t do it. Hats off to you. I’m glad you’re going back in a month or so.. the images are great they all tell a story of the environment and struggles of the musk oxen.. but seeing the effort you put in to getting these shots makes each one 100x greater. Here’s to a great 2018! And many more adventures. Andy.

Hi Morten, I've just recently discovered your videos and I just love them . I'm just an amateur wildlife photographer, mostly birds. But last year I managed to chase one of my dreams... to get to the north and take photos of polar bears in the wild. A dream come true! So I totally understand your thinking and passion. I do have a question.... do you ever carry binoculars ? I realize it's extra weight is a deterrent... but sometimes it's just nice to see the animal up close and live. I will take in the scene and then I start taking frantically taking pictures! lol. Best wishes from Canada. Coral

These two vids have been mesmerizing to watch. The images at the end are surreal and feel like theyre out of another world. Thank you for investing the time to create this!

Thank you so much Nikonuser - that is what I call a compliment. It makes me so incredible happy that you got so much motivating and inspiration from this video. That is my jet fuel when it is getting a little hard out there and when it is a little too annoying to film myself;) Happy new year to you:)

Morten, you are a master story teller with your words, videos and images. I simply love the work you do and your emphasis on place and respect for your subjects. Having recently spent a day shooting landscapes in -37deg F (-38deg C) temperatures, I can only imagine the challenges you faced... working slow and carefully to prevent physical injury and equipment failure, prepping meals in a cold tent and hiking in white out conditions. Like many others, I really look forward to seeing where you take us in 2018! Happy New Year to you... bruce

Wow! I salute your strength and grit - it clearly could not have been easy given the extreme conditions! I feel a bit embarrassed for baby-ing my gear so much, there is something to learn about how you just use your tools as necessary... Thanks for the inspirational video, and greetings from Africa!
