Painting foreground details such as leaves and foliage can be time consuming. However with a little extra work to shade in the areas first, prior to the detail, it can be done a lot easier.
In this video I show you how to paint this country road through the autumn forest. I detail how to paint the leaves on the ground, the highlights and shadows, as well as the gravel on the road.

Glad to find the "other half" of this painting as I was a bit scared I wouldn't. May not be a reason for that, but, I'm glad, anyway ... watched the two videos of this "back-to-back" because it's such a beautiful painting!!! Thank you again for sharing it and your techniques with us all. Still LOVE this painting. 😁

Chuck, you nailed it! Nice job. I particularly like the gravel road, and the strong sense of light and shadow drawing your eye up into the center of the painting. Great effect of a sun dappled road. Can't wait for part 3, the final touches.

This scene reminds me of a beautiful place I take my dog for walks in the fall. All you need is a frisky little Westie frolicking in the leaves and I’m there.

Wow, I absolutely love this painting. I feel like I want to go there, just walk right into the painting, lol. I was wondering why you use oil paint to finish off your paintings? Does the oil protect the painting? Your magic with a canvas! Thank you so much Chuck.

Hey, Chuck. I just finished my version of this painting. Just wanted to say thanks for your detailed explanation of your techniques. I learned a lot. Also, the video production (from showing pallet, to canvas, etc.) is excellent. Very helpful for someone trying new techniques. Keep making videos. Great work! Thanks again.

These colors are so beautiful, and you get them right on, so many painters I have noticed seen to dull them down way to much, you are the best in painting and mixing of colors....I HAVE TO SAY i get so confused with highlights, not how to, or where but over doing it, I see with many artists there painting is so nice until they highlight, and it goes from a summer painting to looking like snow, and they totally wreck there painting, thank god I can watch you, and you are right on, in my eyes..When is it just to much highlights, seems to be a real problems with many artists...

I jumped right back into painting after seeing this video. It took me 7 or more hours to complete, however thanks to your guidance I currently have, what i feel, is my best piece of art yet. It helped me go out and get the right paints from a local store where now i may join in the local art club and over all it's really improved a lot of things rather quickly in my life to find a drive for art again. I haven't watched any of your other how to or what to use videos yet, I was too excited to start painting. I'd love to be able to send you a picture of the painting for some advice. I know my shadows / light didn't quite line up and how you made everything look so... organic and whimsical is still beyond me. Maybe I missed something. Would you like to see and if so, how may I go about it? Thank you so very much for your hard work and dedication, i'll be trying more of your how to's soon.

I have a puzzle app on my phone. I am taking a painting class at the local community college. My puzzle I picked to paint is so close to being identical that it is unreal. My biggest problem is I hate my road. I have 38 years of different medium's of painting and I can't get the stinking road right. I found you and I love the way you do yours. Thank you for sharing and in turn helping me!!

Amazing as usual...makes me homesick for my home in SW Virginia. Blue Ridge Mountains. The road looks like the road to my sisters farm. There is often the fallen, colorful leaves on the dirt road. There is little traffic on this "back road", so the leaves would not all have been blown to the roadsides, from vehicles. Gorgeous!

Hey Chuck :) You probably don't remember me, but i started painting along with you on your video. I still have to figure out the details and i am not as skilled and experienced as you are, but actually, it's looking good :) my painting is a lot more rough than yours, but i think since it is my first time painting a landscape with acrylics, that's normal. A tip to self-doubting painters like me: take a break, make some tea and do something else. Then go back and look at it from a few meters apart; we spend so much time close to a painting, it looks horrible to us, but when you take a step back, you realize, it isn't that bad.

I still have so much to learn, but you are helping me along that road!! One of the things I'm learning right off it the kind of are that appeals to others! Sometimes I'll do a painting and get a bunch of Likes and I thought it was super duper!!!! Other times I'll paint something that I think is good, but eh! And I'll get all kinds of super comments! So it's a good lesson to me to be diverse in what I paint, and of course l earn something from every painting!
