@@chuckblackart I much appreciate this. All kinds of seeds planted. Right now, I'm just planning to post some photos to my Facebook page to show friends and family. At some point, I'm going to want to look to having my stuff shown, and will need clearer images. I am also thinking of limited edition prints. Just curious whether this can be done at home, or whether this would take a professional setup to do right.

Finally, all in one place! I learned lots of details I never knew. I have been photo/photoshopping a long time but never in one place did I learn the whole set of individual parameters/settings/values needed to photo my work. I had some parts right. Now, I not only know the answer to some puzzles (how to get the best stitched images, tape measuring distance, and histograms) you confirmed that I had some stuff right already. Nikon D3400 is my current rig. (My dad had a 35mm Kodak film camera from college [1930-40s] so I’ve always documented my life and work and the “goodness” of having someone, again, tutor me now in my 70s is priceless a gift from you, Chuck. When we get older we have to hunt long and hard for teachers as dedicated as you and as conscientious and warm-hearted! You’re a great role model for the young, and patient as Job for us oldies! Really helpful! Practical! -Glenn

Hi Chuck. I'm sure you have made it easier for an artist to get a handle on the process. One thing though that artists always seem to get wrong in photoshop is how to correct for blue. You simply increase yellow. In Photoshop you need to think of the primary colours as Red, Green, and Blue. Their compliments are Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. To reduce a primary you increase its complementary colour. one slider not two unless it is not a pure primary colour that needs fixing.. That said people often mistake a Cyam shift for a Blue shift. Catches me out sometimes. All the best from Australia.

great tutorial but a few things to note. make sure the bulbs are rated for the same colour temperature (ie. 5000K) and set your camera to photograph at that setting. this will make the colour shifts less noticeable in the photograph. also there is colour correcting tools like x-rite colorchecker passport which will ensure colour accuracy if used properly.

@global001
@global001 5 жыл бұрын
Good beginners guide however the Shutter Speed isn't dependant on the painting, its dependant on the amount of light available. The more light you have, the higher the shutter speed you can use. The correct exposure is a balance of ISO, f-stop & SS. Explanation of the Histogram isn't totally right, the histogram you showed is for an image with evenly covered light, mid colours and dark areas (ie a virtual bell curve). However having most of that data around the dark area would be the correct exposure for images that have mainly dark colours in it and little light colours. It wouldn't actually be underexposed. Having the histogram past the light area means is correctly exposed for an image that is mainly all whites and not over exposed. It's better to get a linear polarising filter for both camera & lights to reduce reflection rather than a circular. Always take a photo of white card under the light so if you don't white balance in the camera, you can do later in post production. I shoot art for world renowned auction houses. I never shoot above 100 ISO because noise will deteriorate the image quality even on high end cameras.
@chuckblackart
@chuckblackart 5 жыл бұрын
Yep that's correct, and of course there's always better equipment. I've honestly though never been able to tell the difference between my images at 400iso and the professional's who use hasselblads and crazy $20k camera scanners. They also charge a lot. When stitched together properly, multiple photos of a painting with good equipment can produce an amazing high res image.. with some practice of course. White balance and lighting are the biggest things I left out for this video. Good high CRI bulbs at 5000k and understanding white balance in your camera is really important for me. Thanks for the comments!
