I thoroughly enjoy your very helpful content. Thank you. I'm just starting to be interested in animal art. Six years of playing with watercolor I have begun soft pastel. I'm not sure if realism is going to be my style but I know there's much to be learned from it. I'm glad to see that you tranfer the same way I do.

I like your honesty about transferring photos like this. My problem is that I've worked very hard to be able to free hand my work to a decent standard while other "artists" trace and deceive buyers by not telling them this method was used. I now have to declare that I free hand all my work in the hope of a little extra credit.
@wildlifeartjm8 ай бұрын
I have lessons teaching drawing freehand too - for me it comes down to time. But in my opinion everyone should be free to do what they want and if they want to use a tool like the old masters even did thats up to them.
@stevenhopkins29258 ай бұрын
@wildlifeartjm I agree, but like I say, it's an honesty thing to me. I already said how I feel cheated if someone has traced but also, if you can draw to a high standard then the only time, I can see, where time would be a factor, is in a commission and then the person who selected you might not be as happy with the result if they knew it was transferred like this. Free hand should be encouraged, I think. Just use transferring for painting practice. Each to his own though eh.
@stevenhopkins29258 ай бұрын
@@wildlifeartjm I would happily transfer or project one of my own smaller sketches if I was having trouble with a likeness or to speed up the process of enlarging a sketch to a big canvas.

Great information, Jason. Recently I discovered another way, I have an old Lightbox from the 80's that still works. I was amazed to find out I can see the outline drawing when placed underneath the Pastelmat Card. Also I have been a member of Patreon since 2016 after a recommendation by Lisa Clough (Lachri).

some of my lessons ONLY use pastel pencils, many use panpastels too just because they are quicker on the underlayer and save pencils wearing out quickly - but you can absolutely just use pencils like this free lesson - Giraffe - www.patreon.com/collection/196136?view=expanded

I am having to figure out a way to get a large enough reference photo in order to do a large format drawing, like 16 x 20.... I find when I print out a photo on 4 different sheets from my printer, once I tape it all together, it seems distorted. Ive tried and tried... no luck yet! Suggestions?

I go to my local printer with the photo on my phone. He prints it out in the size you want. In black and white on normal paper it’s not too expensive. I also have a projector where I can trace the photo by taping my paper to the wall

I just put the photo of my subject to a spreadsheet, get it to the size I want ( usually to fit a A2 canvas) and print on several pages. It can be fiddly if the printer overlap a bit of the photo, but works ok. I then put the photo together with sellotape. Then I use a wide kitchen proof paper ( the cheap variety) to transfer. Et voilà. Yes a bit fiddly if the image is bigger than what the printer can print in one page, but fast enough.

If you're printing the image off the computer via printer why don't you just import the image to an image manipulation app like Photoshop, then desaturate the image and play about with the edge enhancer and levels to produce the lineart for you. That way, you avoid the unnecessary printer ink cost for printing the full image and the rig marole of doing what you do?

If this is SOMEONE ELSES PHOTO , THIS IS PLAGIARISM They could be SUED. so So many Photographers do WORK HARD.. NO WONDER ART GALLERIS CONSIDER this JUST being a good COPIEST, and will sue. and if that Person can NOT produce in a court room to PAINT DRAW without a PHOTO how to do a Realist Squirrel , dog , deer. cat, bird. PEOPLE need to know the ANATOMY, and if they do not know the Anatomy with out a Photo, it will show in COURT OF LAW. CAN YOU ? you say you have been doing it for years, May this will show in a COURT OF LAW. to see if you can do it without a photo.

ha.... why do you assume all that? This is my OWN reference photo, one I took with my OWN camera, that I allow my patreon members to use in their artwork. I dont know why some people jump to conclusions before actually learning the facts of anything. I guess the lesson here is to learn the facts BEFORE you rant.
@rogerredford40109 ай бұрын
I agree that nobody should copy someone else's photo into a drawing or painting without their permission. I often use reference photos shot by the client themselves and with permission that's fine. Although I will say that I prefer a less photorealistic style (in my mind, I may as well display a photo if that's the case), but everyone has their preference and if photorealism is your thing, that's fine too.
@heidid23469 ай бұрын
@@wildlifeartjmI agree. People should not jump to conclusions. I am not a good photographer so I don’t take my own photos but I always ask for written permission to use someone else’s photo, or I buy it from them or from a website that supplies photos.
