I wanted to try out a sanded pastel paper but they are so expensive. So I went to the hardware store and bought some very fine 1000grit sand paper. It's less than 1/2 the price of pastelmat or uart. Now I can see why sanded paper works so well with pastels and I have some cheap paper to practice on before moving to the more expensive stuff.

Did it give the same result as with sanded pastel paper ?

@@yassineelmahdaoui7596Sand paper gives a good result, however it sands down your pastel sticks very quickly.

I'd heard of this and I'm going to try mixing pumice powder with acrylic gesso to make up tinted pastel media to use on mdf boards. This is a must for large projects.

Get GOLDEN FINE PUMICE GEL. It’s already toned a medium grey and you can use it on any substrate. Works great for pastels and coloured pencils and pastel pencils.

I am very new to using pastels (and art in general). I recently did a piece and tried using fixative between layers. Darkened the work and eventually made piece unworkable. I was using Canson pastel paper and Krylon workable fixatant, Carbothello pastel papers. After some research, found several problems with my approach. Cason paper left quite bit of dust and did not seem to hold soft pastel well but fixative led to problem of unworkable, dark result. I have seen that pastelmat paper without fixatant being well recommended (but expensive). Does anybody know of a video that compares goldens pastel ground on a good mixed media paper to some of the well know pastel papers (including pastelmat) to see where it would fit in the mix.

Nice demo Jason. Have you tried Art Spectrum Colourfix Pastel Primer. It comes in a rough or smooth texture and can be painted onto almost any surface. It's made here in Australia so I'm not sure if it's available in the UK. I prefer the smooth myself but you might find the rough texture to your liking.

I find Ingres paper difficult...it doesn’t hold pastel like the sanded ones do

Thanks for this, Jason. I've been thinking of trying it. Do you think it would work of a wooden substrate?
@wildlifeartjm7 жыл бұрын
I think so - but you may need to gesso 1st possibly?

Hi Jason. I am going over to Patreon to check out the full video. Have you tried the Art Spectrums Colour Fix Pastel Primer. I do like that, and it comes in a large variety of colors. Less expensive than buying their colourfix papers.HOWEVER, I want to find or make a recipe of my own, that I can tint or leave clear, which gives me a fine sanded texture. It is easy to make a gesso. I am reviewing ingredients for making a pastel/color pencil FINE sanded surface medium to apply to paper, canvas or boards. I want to test the differences between the pre-made products and my own and UART sanded papers ( which I love) - Curious to know if you have made or tried and DIY sanded mediums??Regards, LoriAnn and Takoda the awesome sevice dog.

LoriAnn ,even ive tried colourfix primer its available in UK as well as USA.Here in USA Golden pastel ground is far cheaper 50% than colourfix primer.32 oz(alsmost 1 litre) costs only 26$US.However colourfix clear primer 1 lire costs 48USD

"Making pastel paper CHEAPLY" sounded like a title you'd put on a video where you show making pastel paper CHEAPLY. But you were only drawing a tiger on paper you already made.
