You guys wouldn't be the first to misidentified the Red Bass for another member of the Lutjanid family and visa versa, a mate of mine threw back a nice Golden Snapper thinking it was a Red Bass. Life it's a learning curve which we are all on and mistakes will be made, so what did Fisheries do ?. I ask because I had a mate elderly fellow who mistakenly kept a Grunter thinking it was a Bream, which meant it was undersize and he copped a nice little fine for his effort, he said he only kept it only because it was near dead anywhere and the hook was so far down it's throat he thought he'd kept it for crab pot bait. Here's some other distinguishing features of note - www.fishingworld.com.au/news/fish-facts-red-bass Red Bass are a fine looking fish with a typical Lutjanid body shape. Their daytime colouration consists of a distinctive dark brown colour to the top of the body grading to deep red flanks, while at night these colours fade to a paler yellow/red. Red bass closely resemble several other lutjanids including mangrove jacks, but can be distinguished from these by the dark upper colouration of the pectoral fins, the yellow colour of the red bass’s eye and the presence of a deep groove or nasal pit running from the nostrils towards the eye. Young red bass and some adults have two silvery-white spots on their back, one below the middle of the dorsal fin and one below the base of the last soft dorsal rays. These spots lead to some people using the alternative name of “two spot red snapper” to describe the species.
@WildReaches3 жыл бұрын
Hey Captain Bax, thanks for the info mate. You’re spot on mate, definitely a learning curve, everyday in every aspect! Fisheries had more of an implemented educational response and we’re still in contact discussing things. I think because they’re not exactly a fish under pressure but a no take fish due to having harmful levels of ciguatera.👍🏼
@CaptainBax3 жыл бұрын
@@WildReaches Well I don't want to bad mouth Fisheries because they do a fantastic job but I think in the case of my old mate, he'd been having a hard time of things so me a few mates got together and fixed his boat up for him to get it back on the water after years of sitting neglected. I think that was his first or second trip out in it and I just reckon fisheries are a bit heavy handed in handing out fines and just like the police can be. The fact that they have to meet quotas is appalling because I believe none of us are perfect and we all make mistakes from time to time. A simple warning and education would of sufficed, their job should be more focused on educating the public when it comes to a trivial matter rather then handing out enforcement notices. Yes if you're a repeat offender, then fair enough but my old mate didn't even realise that Grunter were this far south as he had never caught one in all his years fishing he said. Lucky we sorted his safety gear out for him as well, I guess he was not up to date with all the new rules having not fished for many years and I doubt that he even owns a mobile phone let alone fishing apps... sad thing I think it turned him off going out as much he'd like.
