Im very impressed Cam and Tiff you have really nailed your weights, and to be honest I dont think alot of people put as much thought into weights as you have, cheers Robb
@kadachiman723411 ай бұрын
Probably one thing that you left out of your presentation is that to get accurate weights at a public weighbridge you need to get 3 weights measured. 1. The towing vehicle on its own (fully loaded inc PAX as it would be when travelling) = GVM 2. Caravan / trailer on its own (inc. jockey wheel) (fully loaded as it would be when travelling) = ATM 3. Caravan connected to the tow vehicle but with just the towed vehicles axles on the scale = you can calculate Tow Ball Weight with those 3 measurements you can then calculate all the weights you need.

Correct, rear axle weight along with GVM is where most go over the limits. Had my MUX and 17' van weighed recently and adding 244kg tow ball weight to the rear of the car added 350kg to the cars rear axle and reduced front axle load by 108kg. Something to be aware of.

Cam, as you have a lift in your 300 check your steering stops that they line up on full lock. I found my 300 with a 50mm lift in the front put the steering stops out of alignment a bit causing a clunk on full lock when they fully seat/stop. I was an honest caravan salesman, would immediately advise I couldn't sell them a van without updating their vehicle. This highly enlightened customers, totally worked in my favour as they'd rtn to us for caravan purchase once new vehicle had been sourced. Great vid Cam, especially your explanation of the weights & distribution, rear axle loading & towball weights seem to catch people out. We are looking to move away from our Patriot camper to an off road van the next couple of years on prep for a big lap in 2027 and one thing I can’t find much on is payload. Some of the vans with the older style of construction (eg Kedron) seem to have nothing left by the time you fill the water tanks up. I guess this doesn’t matter much for most grey tow-mads as a couple of cardys & a fishing rod don’t weigh much, but families when you add 4 bikes, 4 peoples with of clothes, school books, toys, games etc even 500kg doesn’t go far😕 Great choice the GX there’s plenty of features as a 70 series owner it would be amazing just to have split zone AC, don’t need a sunroof or heated seats in a touring vehicle 😄

As a new caravaner, we bought a GXL LC 300 to pull a zone peregrine bunk van. 300 is almost stock with method wheels and Mickey T tyres + airbags. No “fruit”. We don’t have a read on front/rear axle weights. We found that the vehicle was a bit like travelling in a launch hence the addition of air bags. Travelling weights are: GCM 5.98, GTM (on tow) 3.02, off tow 3.26t, Ball wgt 240kg, van GVM 2.96t. Van is rated @ 4.5t so have a D045 hitch. We were brutal on weights and have been running in the high 17 to low 18l per 100k. 300 has power to burn for our setup. Apart from dying while under load pressure twice (steep, steep hills and byfiefd NP sand hills) my mistake as I didn’t think in needed low range! I expect my weights to slowly climb but we’ll address suspension as required to stay within laws. Only 9k travelled. Anyway keep producing fun, informative, entertaining warts and all content. Brian

Great presentation of the weights. Even though you are technically within the weight limits (and in no danger of getting a fine or a stop driving order by the Weights and Measure boys) I believe you are practically over the weight limits. IMO the ATM should not be more than 75% of the GVM (you are at 82-83%) otherwise you have the potential problem of the tail wagging the dog....and end up with the dreaded sway. Adding Long Range Tanks etc. (up to 300kgs) to the GVM will certainly help with the weight percentages. What your presentation does highlight is that most of the people out there with 3500kgs caravans are likely to be over the weight limit if the towing vehicle is a 4WD

Great content, with the Stone Stomper, they do a flap notched in exhaust exit location, we cooked ours on the Lc 200 no issues since fitting the replacement. The weights need constant work ,with long range tank ,bullbar etc it is surprising how quickly things change, especially on the rear axle max. I have had concerns if any problem were to occur with a rear axle failure. How would Toyota warranty claim be effected who pays up the suspension supplier or Toyota? Shock loading is an issue and can increase weights substantially if one hit a large pothole etc. Safe travels
@WildTouring11 ай бұрын
Cheers mate! Yeah valid concerns. I guess the options are to run with genuine Toyota products, stick within factory weight limitations and pray if you have a failure it happens within the short warranty period. That’s just not an option for us. Factory suspension would handle horrendously with the weight we’re lugging, we wouldn’t be legal/insured and we’d have arguably a much higher chance of gear failing. So we stick with what we know. 7 + years running Pedders GVM upgraded vehicles, many 10’s of thousand kms of rough tracks loaded to the limits and it’s always performed well. We chose a brand that’s been around for 70 years, has over 100 stores around the country, a long history of supplying kits to NGOs, emergency services and the mining sector, and works with Toyota to deliver vehicles upgraded pre registration.

Hi Cam, I was wondering about the roof rack noise. Is it just general wind noise or is it also vibration/humming? I bought a roof rack for one of our cars many years ago. The rack was a genuine product and as soon as I put it on and drove a few K's, I had to stop and take it off, as it was way too noisy. I googled it and the fix was wrapping a rope or wire around the front cross bar to break up the vortices coming off the back of the bar. The roof rack is now silent. I took the wire off the rack and put some vertical runs of silastic in its place as the wire kept coming undone. Same result. Maybe you could try it instead of replacing the rack. Cheap hack.

What a lot of people are unaware of is that any GVM upgrade may void your car manufacturers warranty. Toyota Towing Handbook, which is available online, acknowledges GVM upgrades but does not give any definitive information as to whether it voids your warranty or not......and we all know what often happens when areas are left grey and open to interruption. Pedders (and others) may warranty you suspension upgrade, but they do not warranty the cars drivetrain, transmission etc.....that would be your cars manufacturer who did not warranty the suspension upgrade.

Hey Scott, yes the GCM (Gross Combined Mass) is the total weight of car and van together. So it definitely includes the tow ball weight (TBM) , but if the van is hitched onto the the car it’s included on the cars GVM because that TBM has transferred from the van to the car, like this; GVM (Cars weight including TBM) + GTM (weight of caravan excluding TBM) = GCM (total weight of car and caravan combined)

Hey Cam, I recently went and took a 300 for a test drive and thought it would be quite a fun car offroad. Questions : how have you combated the throttle lag? I noticed when putting my foot to the floor I could've made a cuppa before it selected a gear and started moving. Also how does that affect it offroad and while towing on road? Looking at lapping Oz and tossing up between this and the ram 1500 limited.
@WildTouring8 ай бұрын
Hey mate, I put a throttle controller on it so that I can select the responsiveness for the type of driving I do- stop start commuting/ towing/ offroad etc. The factory drive modes also alter the throttle response. The manual suggests you tow in sports mode. Which I find was much nicer to drive in just about every situation. I love the car. Tows beautifully, it’s comfortable, has plenty of power and goes great offroad.
@EastofSomewhere11 ай бұрын
Hello Cam. Did you do the GVM upgrade pre delivery? It is my understanding that if you don't then the upgrade is only valid for the state you are in. I'm not sure if that means that you become automatically over the limit in the eyes of the law when you go across state borders or of it only matters of your were trying to register the vehicle in another state.
@ianweal308111 ай бұрын
Cam may answer this better, but I got a Federal (pre rego upgrade) GVM upgrade as I wanted to be compliant in any state & able to onsell our vehicle intestate if necessary (we have purchased interstate ourselves previously). Federal compliance gets a second VIN plate known as "second stage of manufacture" VIN plate. In our case it's mounted beside our Nissan VIN plate. VIN number remains the same, just details federally uploaded across Australia. Moving on, as I understand it, your vehicle just has to be compliant in the state it is registered in, hence "after initial rego upgrades" are state compliant only but once registered can be utilised interstate for practically any purpose, mainly touring though. Should you wish to sell it or register it interstate, the previous upgrade becomes invalid & requires to be re-engineered to compliance of the new state. It's certainly painful, not automatic. Mines an August 2023 build and I've got the same amount of kilometres on mine. I've just towed a 2.65T van 2000km and mine hasn't used any oil. I'm averaging 18-20L/100km at the speed limit (including 110km/h zones where legal such as Victoria and Queensland). I've got similar mods except for the roof rack and I've got standard size tyres but in an A/T. Happy Travels. P.S That's the worst looking parma I've ever seen. Hopefully it tasted better than it looked.

How did you get your Ball weight on a weigh bridge??, I can understand GCM and GVM, we also have a LC300 and strangely enough have the same GVM upgrade as you, our vans ATM is 3495, our GCM was fine, but don't you need an independent professional to get an accurate Ball weight??
@WildTouring11 ай бұрын
Measure the height of the draw bar while the vans hitched. Unhitch the van so that the jockey wheel is on a seperate plate to the van axles, lower jockey wheel to the height it was when hitched to the car and drive off the weigh bridge. You’ll get two weights, the TBM and the GTM. Add them both together and that’s the ATM. Or, unhitch the van so that jockey wheel AND axles are on the one plate (if your van will fit). That single weight will be your ATM. ATM - GTM = TBM. Or, buy a tow ball weight scale. These are not super accurate. But can be handy to use at home to see how moving things around in the van affects weight distribution.

Thanks for your video on the weighing. It was very interesting. I noticed, though you said that the towbar weight of 260 was included in the vehicle weight and then later on you said it was included in the caravan weight so it can’t be in both which is it or have I just picked this up wrong? Thanks for your advice.
@WildTouring11 ай бұрын
Hey Mark, the 3440 GVM included the 260kgs of ball weight because the van was on when it was weighed. So in this instance with the van on the back; GVM (3180+ 260 TBM) + GTM (2840) = GCM (6280). If the van WASNT on the back and I weighed both separately it would look like this; GVM (3180) + ATM (GTM 2840 + TBM 260) = GCM (6280)
@kadachiman723411 ай бұрын
When attached to the car it is part of the GVM (cars weight), when unattached it is part of the ATM (caravans' weight)...so you are correct it is not counted twice when it is looked at as a combination of car and caravan.

Given you are so far under GVM with the GVM upgrade, aren't you concerned about the suspension performance both when loaded and even unloaded? Pedders GVM upgrades are there to cover the additional weight at all times. They aren't progressive, so I imagine this will be firm and stiff and not flex as well as it could. Load it up! Boat, motor, more weight. get it in and i Imagine it will settle in really nice once you get another 400kgs in the car
@WildTouring11 ай бұрын
Cars over factory GVM with the van on, needed to have a GVM upgrade to be legal. Springs are the 200kg constant load option. It’s my daily driver and drives beautifully - fridge, draws, battery system are all built in and stay in the car all the time.

hey guys just on the weigh bridge, I've heard they are not accurate for cars & vans?
@WildTouring11 ай бұрын
They’re periodically calibrated to be accurate within a reasonable margin. Department of Transport use them for licensing, they’re the mob that enforce compliance. So if it’s good enough for them it’s good enough for me 👍🏼

That's a massive increase in GVM with the Pedders kit. I would be concerned about how the chassis and body mounts are going to cope with that over time. I can't imagine Toyota helping out if there is a problem so do Pedders offer any kind of warranty?
@WildTouring11 ай бұрын
5 year warranty from Toyota, 2 year warranty from Pedders 👍🏼
@donr6211 ай бұрын
@@WildTouringgood luck with that because if you have a problem with the Cruiser attributable to weights and loads e.g., engine or transmission issue, Toyota will wash their hands of it and Pedders won’t care.
@rob738511 ай бұрын
Let’s face it most aftermarket mods like this void almost all warranties and if they don’t technically they will run you round and tie up so much of your time and cash most people would run out of finances. Pedders might replace there broken/failed parts but they ain’t Ganna fix no further issues with the car- ie chassis/ body mounts! And Toyota will blame pedders and the cars owner! Seen things like this happen before with vehicles that live and work in harsh environments!

Hi cam if max Gcm is 6750, then Gvm 3440 + 3100 Atm = 6540 Gcm that would be 210 under would this be correct? Just had rear springs and air bags added to my new y62 by pedders cannington, great service from the team.

Hey Bill, the 3440 GVM included the 260kgs of ball weight because the van was on when it was weighed, so you’re adding that ball weight twice in your calc. So in this instance with the van on the back; GVM (3180+ 260 TBM) + GTM (2840) = GCM (6280). @jackturtle13111 ай бұрын
G'day guys maybe you can help me out with the weights as stated : Does a GVM upgrade increase GCM? As stated above, the GVM upgrade will not increase your GCM. This means that should you reach the new maximum weight, your towing capacity will drop as you have essentially shifted the weight from the potential caravan or trailer to the vehicle itself.4 Aug 2023 ----------- What is the answer I'm buggered to understand it
@WildTouring11 ай бұрын
Just means that the GCM value doesn’t change, so if you put more weight in the vehicle you’re reducing how much you can tow. Doesn’t mean that the upgrade itself reduces what you can tow. Hope that makes sense.
@allthegearnoideaoverland11 ай бұрын
Makes you wonder why they dont have an option from factory to upgrade everything.

@Sabumnim66611 ай бұрын
I find it interesting you mention being legal when referring to tow ball weight there is no legal tow ball weight apart from when you exceed the limit. the other point on this is that due to a tow vehicle over hang you need to calculate the real allowable weight. So even though you have 350kg allowed the overhang calculation reduces this to a value usually very close to 300Kg. Robert Pepper has a great explanation on this.
@WildTouring11 ай бұрын
350kg is the maximum ball weight for the vehicle. 8-12% TBM is the generally agreed upon recommendation.

Wrong!! the LC300 GVM is NOT 3440kg it is 3280kg. The GVM is NOT the sum of the two maximum axle weights, it IS instead what Toyota specifies. While the front max is 1500 and the rear 1930 (not 1940), you can't load both to the max at the same time.
