Hi Sweetheart, I'm not understanding how to download - from the 'box" and print the guitar tabs. I'm so happy and grateful to you for doing this and I easily follow what your are doing. Help an Elderly Woman please & let me know how to download. Love this song in particular and its been my favorite since I heard it on my grandfather's radio in the 1950s. We lived on a northern Georgia small farm, with a mule, cow and chickens. We listened to the radio after church on Sundays. He only had one electric plug for the entire house for a light and the radio. I look back and remember those old days. Often, we had to ride into church in the mule pulling the farm wagon sitting on bales of hay while my grandparents rode on the wooden wagon seat. The road was red clay. At times we could catch a ride with the neighbors who owned a car. Geez am I old!

Hey Bluegrass Mojo , yeah, I noticed that too. Sometimes I catch myself treating the two eighth notes as just a quarter note, meaning, I just do one down stroke instead of a down up. It still has the same effect if you do either and often when I play I find myself doing both kinds when performing or teaching. But I often tab it out as two eighth notes and teach it like that as I feel it's important to establish that down/up strum. Thanks.

Hi Ryan like your style of teaching. what pick and strings do you use . when you strum what strings do you strikejohn
@mwr8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, John! I usually use Martin Medium strings. I use all kinds of different picks. Usually nicer picks and at least 1.25mm in thickness. I'll use bluechip, tortoise shell, and now I'm using a carbon fiber material. When I'm strumming I will most often hit the 3 highest sounding strings of that chord. For the most part in this lesson, that will be the g, b, and e string just as noted on the tab. Glad you enjoy!

Strictly speaking, the title is somewhat misleading when it purports to teach how to play this tune in the "Carter Style". Mother Maybelle never ever used a flatpick to play "Wildwood Flower" ...she used a thumbpick and her index finger (with a metal fingerpick) to achieve what became known as the "Carter scratch" (or sometimes the "chicken scratch"). Doesn't mean that a flatpicking arrangement can't be very effective ... it can.. but technically it can't be described as "Carter Style"
@xgraveboi18466 жыл бұрын
murrmac dude, shup up.
@chuckHart706 жыл бұрын
While technically you are right. I think he is doing it with those notes in her style... There are other styles where there is double notes etc...So more refering to the musical style than the technical one.

This is NOT Carter Picking as done by Mother Maybelle Carter. She used a thumb pick and a metal fingerpick and played the melody with her thumb and did a double scratch movement with the finger pick (double up and down strum . She never played with a pick. People bandy names around like Carter and Travis picking and teach people wrong terms and descriptions. Travis eg, used only 2 fingers ist finger and thumb also with thumb pick and people who do not do proper Travis picking insist on teaching people the wrong techniques and calling it Travis picking .Likewise you need to improve your knowledge before you teach.
@mwr8 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Klass , Yes, it's certainly true Mother Maybelle used a thumb pick and some finger picks when she played. And it's clear you have some great knowledge about the music. But I do kindly disagree with you. And I think it's due to our definition of the term 'Carter Style.' I define it as the ability to play the melody while accompanying yourself. That's what I've been taught by Russ Barenberg, whom I studied with for 3-4 years. I've heard other players such as tony rice, David Grier, and bryan sutton use the same language. So again, I think it's how you define it. I guess to say I'm Not doing carter style or I'm wrong it call to Russ barenberg wrong as well. And he has a well of knowledge about this genre of music. He taught me a ton about this style and how to use it in other tunes. So, please don't come around here and say I'm wrong and need to improve my knowledge about music before teaching it. I have done the homework like you. I didn't see any instructional videos on your youtube channel. Honestly, I think we're both right. When people use the term flatpicking, does that just mean bluegrass guitar? People of all genres use a flatpick. So are we mis-interpreting that? When we say fingerstlye, perhaps that's wrong too? People who play in that style use picks, or nails, or the flesh of the fingers. So, who's a true fingerstlyist? Anyway, i think if we're sitting here debating about these details, we're missing what's important, the music. I look forward to your reply.
@bobbybob58568 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Klass Anyone that knows anything about flatpicking guitar knows that this style is also commonly referred to as "Carter-Style." This doesn't mean that he's claiming this is how Mother Maybelle played the song. He';s showing you how to re-create her sound using a flatpick. I need to know...how many times have you spouted off this dumb argument in an attempt to show your superiority? It smells really old, like you've used it a bunch of times. I'm sure you tell people that play tunes similar to Django Reinhardt that they need to injure they left hand in a fire and only play with two fingers otherwise it's not really like he did it. Why not put up your own lesson then and show him how it's done? We're all waiting..... Keep up the good work Ryan.
@kennethjohnsonart8 жыл бұрын
He clearly said "Carter style" and NOT "Carter technique." Props to you Ryan.
@coltreas8 жыл бұрын
When Pete Seeger wrote the book and the accompanying record The 12-string guitar as played by Leadbelly, he did not teach techniques that Leadbelly never used like a flat pick instead of a thumb pick and steel fingeroick. He left alternate uses of the 12-strimg to additional chapters at the end. Also when Harry taussig did his book on instrumental techniques of American Folk Guitar he describes Mother Maybelle s guitar technique properly. Rather describe your style on the video as bluegrass flat picking which is what it is , Like it or not!
