Wiley was found in a hole after the mother was killed when he was approximately 2 -3 weeks old. We brought hijm home and bottle fed him. He is now a healthy adult male coyote that is a great pet!

People who are considering a pet coyote: You must be VERY careful, as they may be tame as pups, but around the time of their maturity they will naturally wander into a large (and very expansive) hardware store to take equipment ranging from rudimentary traps to explosives. Mostly on cliffsides, but due to their adaptability -- expect to see traps set across all environments.

I've also heard tell of fully grown coyotes stealing motorcycles and riding them around the neighborhoods late at night. It pisses the whole town off. Momma lock your daughters up, that bad coyote is back in town.

I used to have a coyote as well. My dad got her when she was about a year old, from someone who had gotten her from an indian reservation. She was always a little on the timid side, but she would climb onto your lap and roll onto her back to be held like a baby. After my dad passed away, when she was about 12, she came to live with me. I had her until she was 17, when she went on to rejoin my dad. She lived a full, happy life as an INSIDE pet.

There was a man I used to know who was a grizzled old sheep rancher. He shot a coyote trying to take one of his lambs. When he went near to the body he heard funny noises and found two pups that were just shy of having their eyes open. He took the pups and put them with his border collies pups and raised them as sheep dogs. He swore up and down to me that they were the best dang sheep dogs he ever had!

Wild dogs were sort of scavengers. So flocking around humans, we evolved together. The advantage of a dog/wolf is that they serve as protection and an alarm system. Domestic Dogs are a result of thousands of years of selective breeding.

This is excellent and Wiley is smart. He went to the windows and the door. He's wondering why his family is calling to the world when he can't see or smell or hear a threat from beyond. He's both loyal and skeptical and he knows his senses would have picked up an incursion before the humans. This guy is intelligent on three or four levels. His family is lucky. This is a unique experience.

The singing is how they communicate and find each other in the wild; that's why he is walking around and looking around. When a mile or two apart, one howls, and the pack a mile or two away will howl, and they meet someplace in the middle. When they all meet up, they often all sing a chores together. It's great to hear when you are out camping in the wild. This is true with most wild animals in the dog family.

Cool..o.o I thought pet coyotes was a weird thing no-one else did!. XD I grew up with a pet coyote. My Dad 'rescued' him off the street, apparently someone hit it and didn't give a shit - It was so young (no older than a month) he mistook it for a dog and we named him Lucky. Then as he grew and the coyote features came in we were like 'Oh shit..well... he's part of the family now!' BEST ANIMAL FRIEND EVER. I miss him so much (1991 - 2013 died at 22 years). Too this day I've yet to own a pet as amazingly loving and protective as Lucky. I figure he didn't have any issues socializing with other pets because we raised him around our old laboradore and cat and took him to the dog beach atleast once a month. They're a energetic handful, but thats about as difficult as they get. Great vid and coyote! :D

Chris Weyer not true. It can happen. I've known 2 different families both raised a coyote pup. Never been in wild. trained and treated like part of family. Many years pass and both the coyotes attacked their family just once. One coyote bit a lil girl, boy and owner. The other bit the owners ear and arm. And I'm not talking about small bites these were aggressive bites, deep wound. So, No matter what you will do, it can happen.

You can tell the coyote is distressed when he hears the howling, he looks for his pack that he used to be with, and cries to be reunited. It's too much for him so he goes back to the couch. Poor thing.

You're projecting your emotions onto the coyote. The (extremely uncomfortable) family is his pack; he's just confused as to why they are howling. Nobody is lost and there's no threat, so he doesn't understand why everyone is making such noise.

It´s amazing how you find this funny and not sad. More like the coyote wants to be anywhere but in that living room. Humans do a great job of destroying things, whether that be nature or a wild animal, eve when our intentions are good. These people think they saved this wild animal by taking it in and calling it a house pet. It´s a wild animal and no, just because someone saved it and raised it does not mean it has become a house pet. A wild animal needs interaction with other wild animals, it does not need to be locked up in a house or in a yard. That poor animal suffers. I don´t understand why people do not understand this; humans are supposed to be the most intelligent creatures on the planet, but obviously we have little competition and are actually really stupid. These peoples intentions may have been good with saving the baby coyote, but once they kept it as a pet they did the wrong thing. Of course they think the coyote is happy with them, because humans are selfish and do not have any experience in knowing how to determine whether a wild animal is happy or suffering. But common sense should tell anyoe with half a brain that a wild animal is not happy being away from its own kind and it is certainly not happy being treated like a dog, trapped inside.

My old neighbor had a half coyote/yellow lab "Rez" was his name. He did not trust anyone except his owner, he always kept his distance and would piss on the spot if he felt cornered. He came from the local indian reservation, I guess a coyote came in one night and got at one of the stray dogs that was in heat.. He was a cool farm dog, lightning fast, extreme prey drive, he NEVER barked and barley ever made a sound.

to Rosa k: While I agree that Coyotes are beautiful creatures I have taken a few furs. Not because I intentionally hunted them. But because I had to defend my herd of goats from them. I never feel right sighting at one. but after a warning shot or two. I have no choice but to take a hit. Out of respect the animal I do take does not go to waste. I will keep the pelts for use in various projects and cremate the bodies to spread on my land. As I said I feel bad about having to do it. But sometimes it must be done.

Howling makes the coyote look for the pack of coyotes, and is probably looking for his kind. You can tell by the way he tries to look beyond the walls inside the house; when the kids are making the howling sounds.

nitish kurup Howling in the wild is meant to be a means of telling other coyotes/wolves that this is your territory, so when they started howling his instinct is to sort of look around for intruders and howl with the rest of his pack to let them know(the intruders) that this is his territory... you can think of it as in its mind howling = territory defence/intruders.. thats why he looks abit anxious and he's kinda checking out around the room for intruders.

I've grown up around pet coyotes also. They are like Border collies on crack, always busy, always doing something. This one is much calmer than the ones I've known. I haven't met one yet that could resist untying my shoe laces or carting off one of my gloves to gleefully bury. They're very interesting little animals and interesting to study up close like that. But as with even a domestic dog, I'd never leave a child alone with one.

You really shouldn't be making howling sounds like that. It's obviously distressing him, as you can tell from the yelping and high-frequency whining he's using to try to demonstrate submission. Besides, coyote howls are unique and used to identify individuals at range; making random howling sounds is just confusing to him.
