The ultimate in solar food processing includes applying solar energy to the beginning of the life cycle of our staple farm products--the egg, and then the chick. Wilfred Okonkwo doesn't stop with solar brooding but has also devised a solar manure dryer and a means to mass produce sturdy parabolic dishes for solar cooking. From Nsukka Nigeria, another Sun Spots story!
Following the edit of this video I received this update from Wilfred:
"Our research work here in Nigeria is still going on and we are doing our best to see how we can get them across to the end users. What we lack is encouragement either from the government or from organizations or individuals. I am very keen to reach out to the right users of our technology. The solar brooding system work is to me perfected for end users use.
"Different versions have been developed ranging from small, medium to large scale Trombe wall systems. The results of their evaluation have been wonderful. In Nigeria, only a few poultry farm holders are using it. We have 12 farmers who have used it. At the Department of Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka we recently constructed what we called 'Standalone solar powered system for sustainable poultry production'. This project comprised both egg incubator, day-old chicks brooding system, rearing house and poultry manure dryer.
"The project was a sponsored project TETFUND, Nigeria. The results are amazing as we produce eggs now for the public to buy, we lay off old layers and dry poultry manure for plant breeders and others to use for soil conditioning."
