Regarding the 4th, 5th, and 6th valves: every time a valve is pressed, length is added to the tubing of the horn. 2nd valve lowers the horn a half step, 1st valve a whole step (two half steps), and 3rd valve lowers it a minor 3rd (three half steps, same as 1 & 2 combined). The problem is that the valves are tuned relative to the pitch of the bugle (the non-valve part of the horn). This causes combinations of more valves to be slightly sharp. This is often compensated for by pulling out the valve slides to tweak the tuning. Tuba players often move slides while playing to fix intonation problems. The 4th valve is a substitute for 1 & 3, which lowers the tuba a perfect fourth (5 half steps). Because this lengthens the tuba considerably, the valve slides are not long enough in proportion to the changed pitch of the horn, and further valve combinations play sharp, sometimes WAY sharp. Adjusting fingerings for pitch works somewhat, but still can leave a big gap in really low pitches or really out of tune notes. Slide pulling is a major way to compensate for that, but it's inconvenient and sometimes slow. 5th and 6th valve slides are usually made longer than normal to help compensate for these problems. The 5th in the US is normally a flat whole step and the 6th is often a flat half step. Use of these in 4th valve combinations can help fix intonation problems and fill in for gap notes; F tubas, for example, have no pedal G-flat an a four-valve horn without some really long slide pulls because 1-2-3-4 gives a G. Use of the 5th and 6th valves can fix that and other low register problems.

Hmm. This is interesting, but I don't think I'm willing to give up useful alternate fingerings like 2-3-5, 2-3-6, 1-2-6, and 5-6, which use the 5th or 6th valves but not the 4th.

The 5th & 6th valve are the flattened version of the 1st & 2nd respectively as then you move into the lower register, the notes tend to get sharp

what Tuba Mouthpiece do you use?

Well the 3 are obviously for just basic notes, in a normal "above low E range" because except for pedal tones that's as low as you can go with only 3 valves. When a 4th is added it allows you to substitute the 1/3 valve combination for just 4. Also the fourth valve combine with the other opens up the note below low E in the low range and the pedal range. 5th and 6th valves have similar effects in the way that they are substitutes for other valve combinations, exactly what these are I don't know.

Does anyone know why he breathes through his nose? Is it harder to breathe normally while standing with a concert tuba?

Joshua Bugtai I think he breathes through both his mouth and nose just because I suppose you could get more in in a smaller amount of time.

+Joshua Bugtai Its curricular breathing and I do it as well (I'm also a tuba player) however all the nose is doing is supplying more air to his lungs if I were you I would take a quick breath from your diaphragm. Also for some tuba players standing up helps them project the sound better but you should prefer what ever playing makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. A Relaxed body and mind will help anyone play their best.

Why do the German tubas have two more valves on the left?
@Felix-nh5pw
@Felix-nh5pw 8 жыл бұрын
Thats because tuning (especial in low register). Fifth valve is usually higher third down and sixth valve is usually lower secund down.

I think all the problems this horn is trying to solve can be better solved by a 5 valve Eb tuba.

I'm not a tuba expert, so I didn't even know what those extra valves were for...but I have a solution. get a contrabass trombone and you can just self compensate with the slide.
