As a kid, my family had a summer holiday in Jämtland and we ended up visiting the Wilhelm P-B museum and my father bought the recordas a memento. 7 yo me could not get enough of this music. It was one of the things that made me learn to play the violin a couple of years later.

An ode to summer, by one of our greatest national romantics :) To me, each of the four parts represent a month. The first one is May, the second is June, and so on. Summer has just gone, but I can't help but long for those balmy, bright, Nordic nights of early June again.

Two years on since I commented and it's still a favourite, definitely my favourite piece of mid Summer music, even better (more 'summery') than the better known Midsommarvaka of Hugo Alfvén. Summer is winding to a close in Ireland as I sit with the lights on in my kitchen looking out at dark trees against a slightly less dark lawn and lighter sky at 9pm. The loneliness of Autumn is on me and I long for the bright all night magic of June and early July.

I don't know - it sounds very English to me. Could easily have been written by Sullivan, Parry, Quilter or German. That does not in any way devalue the music for me, which is written in the best possible taste.

June 22nd, 2022. Here again to celebrate Midsummer, man but this guy really nailed it. Still my favourite piece of 'Midsummer music' and it still, just, shades out Alfven's "Midsomarvaka". Maybe 'The Ballad of St. John's Eve' next in honour of the day itself tomorrow.
