About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

You added some jimping to the chain and did a hollow grind. Lol Love the fix and I always enjoy your content.

You made it half way to my place! The bottle jack does work horizontally but the pump has to be on the bottom. I've used them like that many times at work. Could have used wedges too.

We had a machine called a jungle buster very similar looking to your mower. It had 3 heavy duty chains fitted from the factory. The Jungle Buster could rip through anything, coarse heavy jungle growth, wood hit the odd stone and the stones didn't affect it. The only issue was if some wire had been thrown down by someone or an old fence was hiding in jungle it would wrap around the chains, that only happened to me once doing some real jungle work on contract. I really enjoyed your skill, coming up with answers to problems. Determination is a top skill I use, even if I'm sometimes having to be using a huge hammer plus lots of welder heat.

Dave DeGan the chain is an extension to the blade helps with heavier weeds or small brush.

In Europe we use Chains as standard. Annoying when the end link shears off though.

In Europe we use 13 mm thick chain links. I think your tractor has the power to work with it.

Try using old leaf springs for your mower
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 5 жыл бұрын
That would be a great option. I’ll have to see how long the chain hold up but if they don’t that will probably be my next move. Thanks for the tip 👍

@@Simplelittlelife Any update on using a chain as the blade?
@evaderknives
@evaderknives 5 жыл бұрын
I know nothing about farming equipment, so this is just a off the top of my head idea, but couldn't you get some leaf springs from a junkyard or old truck and forge out a blade for the mower??? Hope all is well, take it easy...
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that would probably work well. Cheers buddy 👍

@@Simplelittlelife I used to work on this kind of stuff for a living, chain is a great fix, if it breaks or wears out it is cheap and easy to replace. Also people make the mistake of using a high tensile bolt to hold the chain, better to use normal grade bolts so they will be a relatively weak point and will shear if the chain hits a serious obstacle. Nice truck!
@ArbitraryLifestyle
@ArbitraryLifestyle 3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisosh9574 I'd rather my shear pin/bolt, made for shearing under a too-heavy-load, break instead of bolts under the mower.

just remove 1 link from either side..your done and up and working again in 3min.
@Simplelittlelife

Hahaha, that would have been easier for sure. 😆 But it would drive me nuts that I didn’t actually make a proper repair.
@joecoastie99

Some interesting stuff. Why not just have clipped one link off the chain instead of all that trouble? Oh, and goats, you need goats. 😁
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Hahaha! That would not be the proper fix though would it 😆👍. The side was bent, the right solution though not the easiest was straighten it out. We had goats for a year and a half and they sure did a good job on the grass

Blades are relatively cheap. Why go to the trouble of cobbling together this death trap?
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t get that this is a death trap. Also, the cost for me was $0.00. Pretty clear why I went this route.

@@Simplelittlelifesorry I don't usually make negative comments. I'm usually pro saving some money, but this is not a place to save money. A set of blades is under $100 and will last a decade or longer for most people.

A chain is good to have if you run into a stone. This method is used when working on the road side.
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 5 жыл бұрын
I understand. I think it’s great to leave comments that aren’t necessarily all fluffy to start a conversation. I appreciate your comment so no issues there at all. The thing is you can buy commercially made blades that are chain. Another part, and this is something you couldn’t have known, is that I constantly hit rocks when mowing. That’s what broke my original blade in the first place. For applications like that, chain are preferred. I trusty believe this is a better solution than solid blades, even if solid blades were the cheapest option. Does that kind of make sense? Either way, I do appreciate your comment. Cheers👍

@@aklman Agreed. I've been wanting to do this on my brushhog. We live in an area that can have some very rough, rocky areas, large rocks sticking out of the ground, hidden by the grass. I've broken many shear pins before moving to a clutch drive shaft, but it still beats up the blades. Ideally I'd love to have a chain flail mower.

I become so "triggered" when I see empty 12 packs thrown on the ground. That infuriates me to no end. I picture in my head, what the person that did that looks like, and it's ALWAYS a garbage human being on multiple levels... Sry, I don't mean to rant in the comment section of your videos. I do appreciate the non-knife videos just as much as the knife stuff BTW. 👍
