I ran a side dump on a few projects and I do like the way they pull. Feels safer in most conditions than a end dump but it does have its limits. They don't pile as good as end dumps. My favorite feature was dumping on the fly by. No need to stop equals less likely hood of getting stuck. So basically if you are dumping on the driver side you steer right, away from the pile, as you dump and it helps keep the material from going under the wheels. Less getting stuck and less chance of flats in your tires. Another good feature of the side dump is less training. End dumps can be dangerous and tend to need more training.

Man what an awesome company and trailer! I could totally see you using this for keyways on ponds and driving around the top side instead of backing down with bubba dump. I could also see this being used to haul stumps and trees since its long and you don't have to worry about it coming out the back.

In the Pacific Northwest you see side dumps pretty regularly. I worked for a general contractor building concrete tilt up warehouses on river bottom soils. Before the foundations could be started, a pre-load of the site was required, in which the site was forced to be compacted. A pile of dirt was hauled in, sometimes 10-12' tall for the entire building footprint and then the site was monitored by surveyors to verify the settlement of the footing sub grade. This could entail hundreds of truckloads of material. The side dump was perfect for a long, wide dump needed for the pre-load. The dumps were windrowed out so the lifts were controlled for spreading by the dozer and better compaction of the pre-load. After the pre-load was completed, all the material was trucked out, except what was needed to get to dock high slab elevation for the warehouses. In this area, the brand you see quite a lot is Sidedumpr. They seemed to work great from my perspective as the GC's superintendent.

Here in Idaho, side dumps are everywhere, probably 40-50% of the dumps are side dumps. They are fabulous for road widening/shoulder work. They can dump a load with minimal traffic disruption. The trip cycle time is much faster. The DEMCO sales team is fortunate to have Mike as a demonstrator. Mike rocked this demo. With the volume this trailer can haul, I'm surprised it does not have an air scale in the rear axles.

I'm also in Idaho and run side dumps, SmithCo is mostly preferred in our area, they hold up and dump (clean out) a lot better than any of the others those squared corners in the bottom is a sticking point, everyone that's had a Demco for a while calls the flex corners flex and crack.

I’m impressed all the dirt came out and didn’t get stuck by pile building up. They definitely have their place, but only when you can get a semi with a trailer to the loading and dumping spot. Not to mention it’s gotta be level ground.
@charliehill6914
@charliehill6914 Жыл бұрын
ANY dump trailer has to be on level ground. That side dump is probably way more forgiving than an end dump so long as the load doesn't stick.

24:29 As a safety turn your tractor a bit when your dumping. If your dumping to the left side, nose your tractor to left.not a lot. You can dump straight. But if you are dumping rock or trash you can back away from it easier if crap gets in under your tires. If you want to stockpile . Cheat your trailer up to you pile and jackknife as you back away. I've run a sidedump a minute or two. It's more fun pulling two at a time.

I pulled a dump trailer a lot of miles in southern indiana over some sketchy roads and dump in places that were far from level. I never turned on over, but came very close a few times. So, as far as pulling goes I really like it, loading looks pretty easy for the operator, it may be limited on placing material exactly where you want it sometimes, 39:37 but the safety of dumping will allow you to dump in places an end dump could not. From what I see for an excavating operation, thumbs up! Can't wait to see you take it to the job site.

@dirtperfect we run sidedumps daily in the Midwest, love them. Only tips I’d recommend are we always turn the truck to 10-25 degree angle from being straight with end dump. So we turn slightly in the direction of the side we dump the load on. That pivot angle makes truck feel stable and prevents the trailer from wanting to feel tippy where it wants to when truck and trailer are straight with each other. Especially with sticky loads, having the truck slightly pivoted from straight helps because sticky loads can be scary when the dump hits that mid dump point(I did too ours once but it sits much higher and had concrete pieces sticking out the top making the trailer too heavy) . Plus offsetting the truck from straight allows you to back up straight into the angle and avoids pulling the rim and tires along/on the pile of material you dumped if that makes sense.

Interesting to see that trailer function. I had the unfortunate pleasure of going rock surfing in a full size pickup when a tail dumper hauling 3x5 rock took a turn too fast and became a side dumper. Lower center of gravity seems like a good idea.

Hey Mike! My in-laws have ran a side dump on their farm in Iowa for 15 years. Their first one was a tandem axle in the rear and they turned it over several times. No big deal, just flip it back over and go again. When they replaced it with a new one, they got a tri-axle in the back and it is way more stable. They leave the 3rd axle down and lift it back up once the load is out. They almost always dump with the truck at a 30-45 degree angle and then back out of the pile before going forwards (prevents getting stuck a lot of the time, as well as creates even more stability). They haul manure, rock, dirt, busted up concrete! Works really well! Hope it is successful for you!

Loaded alot of side dumps, we use them alot in Montana. Just be a little careful dumping really really sticky mud off an embankment. It tends to stick in the tubs some times past where dryer dirt would have normally already started to fall out. The muddy load tends to stick in there causing the wait to be unbalanced to the side your dumping off and I've seen my far share of them on there sides. Usually dosen't hurt anything just have to tip trailer back up onto tires. It kinda tips over on its pile so it dosen't usually take the whole truck over unless your dumping off an embankment where the pile dosen't catch the trailer then the truck sometimes goes over the embankment upside down. Not a good day. Other than that they can be really handy for hauling riprap, and other debris/trees, logs. Can haul larger loads of dirt/gravel like a belly dump but dont need so much space to dump a winderow out like a belly dump requires.

Great Demo. all went well that is till you pulled away from the dump. Notice the tires on the trailer crossing the dump pile. If that were construction debris with sharp objects your investing in new tires or you now hung up on a few stumps or logs that have rolled up under your trailer. Having the right tool for the right job comes to mind.

I lived down south of you guys in Clarksville, TN for much of my life and, yep, the side dumps are odd creatures back east and in the South. After moving up to North Dakota (Watford City, 2014, Williston now), side-dumps were part of the water-hauling/rentals operation I worked for. We used them to haul drill-cuttings to our landfill. We also used them for hauling scoria (similar in color and weight to a clay pot that's been ground up, kinda the same color of the chirt you were hauling but a lot lighter) which is used up here for oilfield pads and a lot of the "dirt" roads. Drill cuttings would stick in the tub frequently (we had long-handled scrapers to clean the tub out) and due to the soft nature of going up on the pile at the landfill, we always had one of our dozers holding that push-block. The push-block was handy for heavy equipment to push us through mud that was often axle deep. At the place where I now drive winch trucks most of the time, we used a couple of side dumps for hauling off demo debris (an old wooden grain elevator over in Montana). As long as the material isn't sticky or frozen in the bottom (if anyone is going to get a load that sticks, it'll be me lol), they work great. If something DOES get stuck, it's a lot easier to get to it with a scraper or the bucket of a wheel-loader or excavator. I've only pulled the tri-axle versions and they are far more stable than they first appear. I've a healthy respect for center of gravity but after pulling them for a while, curves and turns didn't bother me much at all. I'd much rather dump one of these than an end-dump, too. They're easy to switch for dumping to the other side. Windrowing material on the fly is not a problem with some common-sense, of course. Plus, you mentioned dumping over a wall, which is what I used to do at the landfill on occasion in a mixing pit where the wetter cuttings were mixed with scoria to thicken things up. I'll be curious to see how you guys like it after a project or two.

Don't let them fool you you can tip them over especially if you forget to un tarp your load, my buddy just tipped his over 2 weeks ago and it ended up totaling his truck and now has to use his spare truck to pull it. The farm has a bunch that hauls manure and ends up tipping 3 or 4 over every year but I will say most is operator error. You're also going to want full locking gears in your axles when you are spreading.

As a driver that has grown up in the dirt world, construction, paving, demolition, earth moving, and what nots. Mostly on the west coast, but long before side dumps were a thing. I have been aware of their presence and have always wondered about the stability while dumping. So there were a couple things that caught my attention from the start, the first were the drain holes to prevent standing water. Not sure how large those holes are, but being in the bottom of the floor as they are, there would be a fair amount of concern hauling something like washed 1/4 minus (pea gravel) or sand, especially beach sand, not crushed sand, like used in playgrounds and golf course sand traps. The other thing that stood out were the shiny aluminum wheels, my aren't those pretty! But upon dumping, the material spilled into those pretty rims. Two problems there, damage to the pretty finish, and upon completing the dump one would need to pull away from the dump site and take a minute to clean that material from the rims to prevent carrying it out to the road for a potential windshield claim. Much like you should brush the apron from a traditional dump truck. Another disadvantage could be dump site space. Often a contractor will require that the piles (especially stock piles) be kept high and tight, whereas here your piles are 34+/- feet long and stacked side by side. I can see some big advantages, say in a quarry application or in any sort of operation that say a bottom dump might be suited for.

For the side dumps I've operated, we had air scales on the truck and trailer to see if we are within the legal weight limits. So we don't have to get a scale ticket every time I got a load. In my experience the only disadvantage of a side dump is space to dump. If you have a tight location to dump material and need to keep the pile foot print as small as possible, then end dump. Otherwise I'd take a side dump any day. Or a (trout river) live bottom trailer

We do a lot of demolition work (buildings and roads) and have 4 of them. They’ve proven invaluable, and maneuverable. You can also put more material in a smaller area. We run steel rims because hauling concrete destroys aluminums.

Didn't know side dumps weren't popular in the eastern United States, here in the East half of North Dakota everyone and their farmer brother has a side dump kicking around. I think you'll grow to like it.

If you're ever dumping in a sketchy spot, turn towards the pile a little bit then dump. Can help the trailer from getting out of control. Then back away so you don't drive over the pile like your video.

Impressed to see an Iowa homegrown product on your channel. Grew up just down the road from where these are manufactured in NW Iowa. DEMCO is very well known in the central US and west of the Mississippi and it is great to see you giving it an honest look. I'm 55 and can't remember a time where I didn't see a DEMCO trailer on the road when I was growing up. I am certain you will get some great use out of it. Enjoy!

Now that is one neat piece of equipment, Mike. I loved that you could drive away slowly while tipped and the trailer eases back to its original position without having to get out of the truck and not having to fasten the back tailgate. You're gonna love this side dump trailer and I think you're gonna want one to add to your heavy metal fleet. Thanks for sharing this vid. It was exciting to see in action. I've never seen anything like it and this was a treat. Have a fine week. 👍🏽🤠 9/19/23

Absolutely! With the side dump, the box doesn't have to extend over the wheels so you don't have to leave some room in the rear to get weight on the tractor. I've seen one with steerable axles that could turn slightly to move away from the pile when dumping.

I can see a instant advantage for when you are doing a bank on a pond you are always doing is the load you dump is already spread out along the pond bank without the huge pile you have to spread with a dozer a saving on time of at least 1/2 an hour a load over a working day that’s a lot of time saved

I drove a set of 1948 Ace side dump doubles from 70 - 74. Rumored to have over a million miles on them carrying gypsum with the original owner. The damn things just work!
