What a find. I'm a fellow Iowan, live about a half hour north of ya. About 20 years ago I had a neighbor give me a 1970 Amc Hornet that had been in their machine shed since the 80s. I messed around with it off and on over a few weeks and got it running and driving, it's been a fair weather cruiser for me ever since. it's almost the same green exterior color with red and green plaid interior. It has the smaller 232 inline 6 and a 4 speed. It's not a fast car, it's not a "cool" car, but pretty much everytime I drive it anywhere a random old timer will wonder over and tell me about how they haven't seen an Amc in decades and ask me all about it, people still seem to have a sweet spot in their hearts for them.

Wow. This is the first time I saw this channel. I was attracted because a coworker of mine waaaay back in high school drove a gremlin. His was a ‘semi automatic’ but the color green no matter what! I don’t know ANYTHING about cars, and I am still astonished that it would even start let alone run. I am inspired to learn more about vehicles. Especially those from our past. If this old Gremlin could work after decades of neglect, then it proves that anything is possible with a little know how ✌️❤️🔥

semi automatic or automatic? semi auto means that it is automatic but has a function to allow it to switch to manual mode, like what some newer cars have. for example a 2010 Bentley Continental Supersports is a automatic, but I can move the stick into manual mode and then I can use the shifter levers on the steering wheel and shift manually. but a automatic just has one lever that has a P for park, N for natural, D for drive, a D1 and D2, and sometimes a D3, and an R for reverse. I don't think we had automatic/manual (semi automatic) cars back then.

I worked at a Pontiac/AMC dealership back in the 70's. Those engines were pretty good. The only thing I saw was hi-oil consumption due to bad valve stem seals. I replaced a TON of them. This one hurts my heart. My grandpa had an old AMC Gremlin, and he loved that thing. After he passed, my grandma sold it and the family talks about it often. It was nothing special, far from perfect. He used sheet metal and pop rivets to patch all the rust holes, so it was all faded yellow and aluminum paneling. Lots of memories growing up riding in that car. Thanks for the memories.

I bought a new '72 and a '74 Gremlin and they were great cars, both with the 258 motor, Chrysler Torqueflite auto trans, A/C, P/S and P/B. Think I paid 1900 for the new 72 and 2200 for the '74. Excellent, dependable and inexpensive cars for my young family. You see these "worst car" lists and they will usually have a Gremlin. A buddy of mine had a Pacer in HS. One time, he, another friend, and I were riding around doing nothing but causing trouble. Back in the day, they sold these soda bottles that were around 12 oz. and were glass with this plastic thin foam type stuff on it that went around the bottom. You could carefully pull the foam down below the bottle, creating a 2-3" air pocket. Then, if you hit it right, it would make a loud popping noise. So my buddy in the front seat had done a bottle just right and we drove right by these two dudes walking on the sidewalk. My friend "pops" that bottle and it was perfect -- sounded just like a gunshot blast and those two guys hit the ground! We kept driving. I don't know if they ever figured out it was us, but if so, I'm sure they were pissed! Just a small sample of the trouble we got into in that car.

Tip for cooling down an overheated engine: don’t open the radiator cap, keep the engine running, then take a coke bottle filled with water and drizzle over the top of the radiator. It will cool down in no time and be a lot less dangerous.
@DizzLexic Жыл бұрын
also turn the heat up on full blast to pull it from the engine

I bought one of those when they first came out. It was not a bad car. It rode nice, got very good gas mileage, it was pretty quick. If I remember correctly it had a 20-gallon tank gas tank.

I'd love to have an Eagle with the 4wd , your videos on those 2 were some of my favorites. Looking forward to the Gremlin resurrection!

You should also add some 2 cycle oil or Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel when you are trying to start up a very old engine ,the cylinders need the oil on the top to help seal the rings and keep the cylinders from getting damaged ..It helps out the carburetor also
@JustinCombs-jk1kh Жыл бұрын
About how much?
@VIDSTORAGE Жыл бұрын
@@JustinCombs-jk1kh MMO ,2 to 3 ounces per gallon of gas/fuel would be fine since it is not as heavy as a 2cycle oil ..2 cycle oil, no more than 1 ounce per gallon in a 4 cycle engine but a 50 to 1 ratio is safe but don't go over that ratio and use 87 octane fuel because it will ignite faster ... ..

I always pull each sparkplug and pump into each cylinder about an ounce of diesel fuel. let it set for several minutes, turn the engine over a few rotations by hand, and then hit the starter with the plugs still removed. After spinning the engine using the starter, I then re-install the plugs and hit it with a little ether. Works quite well to insure against a frozen ring damaging a dry cylinder wall. On engines that have been setting for as long as long as this one, I will also drain the oil and the replace it with two to three gallons of diesel. Then I let is set several hours - preferably overnight. Then I spin the motor over, manually at first and then using the starter. Sometimes I will even pull the distributor. Using an old distributor shaft, less the cam gear, I will circulate the diesel throughout the oiling system using that shaft and a drill to engage the oil pump. Then I let it set for an hour or so. Then the diesel is drained and I replace it with the cheapest motor oil and filter I can find. "As long as it has an ASI rating it is 'good 'nuff'. It ain't going to be in there long, anyway. Can you say '"Super-Tech and FRAM? Then I start 'er up, let it come to full operating temp, shut it off, and immediately drain the oil, and pull the filter. It is amazing how much filth is removed from the engine. Then I put in better motor oil and install the best oil filter I can find. Ah, no thank you FRAM. .

@@charliecharles-xw4ub It sounds like a really good thing to do with and old engine that has been sitting up for a very long time .. The oil on the cylinder walls have drained off after many years . ...The current gasoline with ethanol is very dry with no lubricant quality .The older leaded fuel was very oily smelling and had upper cylinder lubrication ...
@charliecharles-xw4ub Жыл бұрын
@@VIDSTORAGEL The lubrication provided diesel fuel is sufficient that it will actually support a running engine - at least for a while. I've actually done this with an old engine I intended to rebuild - or not. When I did this I purposefully ran the engine to the point of seizure, and did so at high RPM's. My attitude was that if it literally grenaded I didn't care. Amazingly, the engine ran fine for about 15 minutes and ever-so-slowly dragged to a grinding stop. Also amazing was there was very little knocking until right before it seized. that it didn't really break anything was most surprising. It did, however, result in the destruction the crank and rod bearings main and rod caps, plus scaring of the crank journals. I believed it would suddenly experience a catastrophic end, and it didn't. That's how well regular old diesel will protect the internals of an engine. The other aspect of introducing diesel into the engine and flushing the entire oiling system is diesel breaks down a lot of crap that builds up within an engine. In many respects it is a lot like the solvents used in parts cleaners. ( Hmm... Another experiment I simply have to give a go.. Cleaning solvent in the crankcase. Interesting. I've put numerous old engines back into service using this technique and have never once had a bad outcome due to having done so. Will it save every engine? I'm sure it won't, but I suspect such engines aren't worth saving in the first place.

Kevin....I appreciate you so much for this Video...I have been an AMC Gremlin owner since i was 13years old...My 1st one was a 1973 AMC Gremlin that was given to my by my late grandfather (fully loaded 258 auto car) he bought it off the father of my best friend (he still is my best friend to this day) car had been sitting for a very long time so we pulled the engine/transmission out bought a 93 Dodge 9 passenger van for the drivetrain to go in it...but unfortunately other projects always came before it so she never got finished...& The 2nd one i bought for $900 after saving up my pay checks from my job as a paintball ref...Drove almost 2hrs 1 way to get it...Its a 1970 Base model with a 199 & 3 speed manual... Unfortunately the previous owner had put water in it instead of Antifreeze & the block full of water froze & cracked the head & block....So im currently in the process of starting both projects back up...The 73 is going to be getting the 5.9 with the auto just like pop wanted...BUT...the 70 is going to be getting a K series Honda Engine mated to a world class T5 & used as a daily driver....So with all of that being said....I would absolutely LOVE to add yours to my collection...if you're interested in selling it please let have the honor of looking after such a beautiful gem of American Motors history!!!!

I bought a Gremlin Levi edition in 2013 from a gentleman that took care of an old movie theater in downtown Odessa Texas. As a matter of fact the Gremlin was stored in that old movie theater . It is a 6 cylinder 258 , automatic transmission. I have redone the interior , rebuilt the engine and transmission. The outside is okay but old, no rust. I haven’t painted it but yet lots of people want to buy it. Most everyone that talks to me at the gas station had one at sometime or knowns someone that had one. Did y’all know that the second George Bush had a Levi edition Gremlin while his father was president of the United States. While in Washington he went to pickup a girl on a date in the Gremlin . She was NOT impressed.

This episode brought back memories. Way back when I owned a used Gremlin that ran great after a little work. On the way back from Montreal to Long Island, I heard the distinctive sound of a belt being thrown. Since my steering was fine, I knew it was the fanbelt. I pulled over to make sure the belt was clear and wouldn't take out anything else. The water pump was seized. I had a good 10 miles to the next exit, so I started driving. I quickly realized the temp stayed normal if I maintained 60 mph. Since it was late at night with little traffic, I just kept going. No problem doing the last 200 miles.
