Random story, I’m from down the street from where mcdavid grew up, he practiced with our junior hockey team while he was in the OHL and they had a break in their season. He was 15 years old at the time and guys on my team were up to 21 years old. A 15 year old mcdavid destroyed every 21 year old defenseman in practice and made them look like they were standing still. Bunch of guys going D1 for hockey and this kid 5-6 years younger just made them look silly. Kid is next level

Mcdavids speed comes from a very strong stride, strong legs and perfect skating stance on top of having almost zero wasted motion.
@pyRoy6
@pyRoy6 4 ай бұрын
That last part of "zero wasted motion" might be what puts him over the top. Fast skating is a really complicated physics equation, especially through traffic when you can't really stride. Good skaters can continue to accelerate (and decelerate and turn) without lifting either skate or taking a stride. McDavid has taken that to the elite of the elite level.

To answer the HighStick question @4:30....a player can't redirect a puck with a stick over the Cross Bar of the net. Its what makes that goal special, he waits until the puck drops below the crossbar so his stick doesn't go over it when he tips it in. Brilliant patience and awareness.

The key to McDavid blowing by everyone is ACCELERATION. He can get to his top speed in 2 or 3 quick strides while it takes everyone else 4-6 full strides. That's how he's able to make guys look like they're standing still. He'll come in at a normalish speed and then turn on the jets when he needs to and blows by guys.

He's mastered what's caller the crossover, if you watch his legs, he crosses them over while using his upper body to push as far away from his legs leveraging his entire body weight to pull him forward and put more pressure in a downwards motion. He combines this with incredible conditioning, having no real life outside of hockey (extreme dedication) as well as the fastest and most opportunistic mind. His ability to see an opening and pounce on it before anybody sees it is best in the world. His mind and hands are both as quick as his feet too, which is super impressive.

It's not his leg strength that makes him the fastest, it's his near flawless mechanics. I can't go into the specific mechanics because it would take forever to describe, but he takes advantage of the edges on his skates, skate rocker, the passive stretch of his muscle chains and gravity. An easier way to describe is is that proper skating is actually falling forward. Much like walking, you don't push with your back foot when walking, you move your center of gravity forward and "fall" onto the front foot/leg. Adjusting this concept for skating involves a lot of knowledge, proper mechanics and coordination and Mcdavid is one of the best at it. Also you asked about leg movement, you're correct, you don't go quicker just because you move your legs quicker. When you saw Mcdavid not taking strides but still moving, what he's doing is shifting his weight back and forth from skate to skate with heel pressure on the inside edge of his skates (mirroring his stick handling). The way a skate works, if you put your weight and lean on the inside edge of your right skate, you will cut to the left automatically. He doesn't have to "push". That's what he's doing when you see him cut so quick (he also does other things if he wants the cut to be harder/sharper) . It's edgework.

To clarify the ruling on high stick (4:05) because i feel like ive heard it pretty often from people moderately familiar with the rules just unsure how they are enforced. Long story short for anyone not bothered to read the rest no its not high stick. Theres 3 types of high sticking rules that you need to know but all of them follow 1 easy to remember part, that its called on contact. The first one is pretty easy and thats the penalty of high sticking, when you make contact with your opponent above their shoulder and would get penalized based on the severity, those being being a minor double minor or major/game misconduct with some exceptions like shot follow through and some cases during a face-off. The second and third go kinda hand in hand but have their own distinctions one is a stoppage in play and thats when the puck is knocked down from a height above normal shoulder height (normal player standing height of their shoulders) and is than under control of the same team including the player that made contact. The last rule and thats the one important to your question and thats the goal ruling on high sticking, essentially the contact point of the stick cant be higher than the crossbar at point of contact regardless of following additional redirections, its not normal shoulder height that defines it and the only exception to the ruling is on an own goal, if you knock the puck down with your stick way in the air and score on yourself it will count. Hope that in some way helped

as for his speed isint like running because it is two different movement but its a combination of strong legs, long and fast strides and next time you watch him just watch the number of crossovers he does while skating usually crossovers are used to turn and obtain speed but he uses his while going straight so he gets faster and faster until he's at max speed wich i think the fastest he skated was 25.5 mph im not sure tho

It's not just the high speed, it's the ability to protect and handle the puck at high speed that makes McJesus so effective. With that, a player can take a bit less accurate or powerful shots. But he doesn't. You made a note of moving one's legs faster to go faster. And like you said that isn't the case. What the player has to do is make use of most of his skate blade, from the toe to the heel. An excellent example of this is Nathan MacKinnon, who can accelerate even when making a wide turn across the ice. Watch his outside leg making full days work on each kick, he looks like a galloping horse!

Skating fast is an art, it’s a combination of technique, strength, impulsiveness and also how fast your feet can be
@daletwin1
@daletwin1 2 ай бұрын
being a fast skater involves many factors: One factor is good leg and ankle strength. Bobby Orr was fast and his ankles were very strong. He wore his skates loosely (UNTIED NEAR THE TOP) around the ankles so he could make great cuts and dekes. If he didn't have strong ankles he would not have been able to wear his skates like that. You get your power from your hips, thighs, calves and ankles. Then you need to be a good skater with great balance and skating technique. Tight skating technique that wastes no motion. You also need to be able to move your legs quickly like a great sprinter. A fast skater has lots of fast twitch muscles. You also need to be a good puck handler as well so you don't get slowed down by struggling to hold onto the puck while skating.

There are other players who in a straight line are as fast as McDavid, but nobody else can puckhandle at top speed like him, or maneuver at top speed the way he can.

Skating fast is combination of foot speed, leg strength but also balance and "edge work". He cuts the blades of skates into the ice with force and efficiency to constantly propel him forward or change direction on a dime. He maintains his speed so well even while gliding cause of his edge work. (Balance/agility/dynamic change of direction/acceleration)

A lot of hockey players take power skating lessons and some even take figure skating lessons, they will teach you how to use your entire body to elevate your speed and agility.

Wrist shot = puck on stick for a longer period of time with a bigger follow through Snap shot= looks like your flicking the puck from infront of your body Slap shot = stick in the air and a hard “slap” at the puck (longer range and one timers)

Love to see more people getting into hockey! Skating speed comes a lot from technique. If you watch McDavid in the fastest skater competition you’ll see how he pushes in a diagonal from his body and keeps his body lower to the ground Of course leg strength is a huge aspect as well

Hes not even a goal scorer hes a playmaker who can score. He honestly should shoot the puck more than he does. Hes on pace to get 1000 points before he's played 700 games which is unreal by today's standards. Hes definitely the greatest player of this generation.

The craziest thing about Mcdavid is how fast he can do these moves... Those defensive players look like midget league player but man let me tell you its crazy you skate full speed and pulling out these moves.... thats crazy

He skates that fast because he has great technique, balance and leg strength. He’s able to turn by putting more weight on his skates edges. Skates aren’t perfectly round on the bottom, they have edges on the blade that allow players to grip the ice. McDavid is a master of digging into the ice with his edges to change direction quickly and to accelerate just as fast. In essence while everyone slides just a little more, he can manipulate the ice and get better traction than those around him because of his amazing technique. He isn’t actually the fastest player by a big amount if at all, but he can skate faster than anyone with the puck, so he looks a full gear faster than everyone else because he can not only skate that fast but he can handle a puck just as quickly

If you can sprint really fast with both your toes out-turned you can accelerate on skates too. Think about running, but with your toes out because you need the sharp edge of the skate blade to be creating fricton backwards. If you try a standard running technique the skates just slide and dont gain traction. Another difference is you really need that blade to contact the ice for as long as possible before you lift it for the next stride, so your ideal skating form has more bend to the knees at all times letting that skate contact for just a little longer. Finally your legs go out as they go back matching your skate blade angle so that it scrapes/digs into the ice, whereas when running your legs stay in inside your shoulder width. Try walking by bending your knees, turning out your toes, leaning forward a bit and pushing the groud back and away from you while keeping the other knee bent until it comes down and only lifting the first foot after the second starts its push. Its like that except your stationary foot doesnt come off the ground it just glides and balances while the other is pushing

“How do guys develop so much speed?” You’re right, it’s a lot about leg and core strength. Lots of flexibility too with the hips/lower body to help keep the blades on the ice as long as possible and get as much power on each stride as possible. Guys like mcdavid is some genetics too because every guy in the league is “fast” in their own right. He’s just somehow a freak of nature, no amount of training can make others faster than him
