You nailed it ... in hockey , you’re travelling at high speed and you’re looking down at the puck , so players don’t see the hit coming. It’s not necessarily “blind side” hits , but players are often looking down and vulnerable. “Keep your head up” is a phrase often used in the sport.

The skate blades are 1/8 inch wide and razor sharp. The jerseys are called sweaters, harkening back to the origins of the game. Hockey arenas aren't that cold. On the ice surface it's chilly because of the ice but the ice is kept frozen from below. In warmer cities sometimes the ice gets "slow" from outside humidity. I've seen games where there's a fog in the arena when the outside temp is extreme. The gloves are thick. Hard padding on the top but like leather work gloves on the palm. Padding is actually minimum except for goalies. Old school players didn't wear much padding at all. Not much more than like motor cross pads. Pants are really the most padded, along with knees, shins, elbows and shoulders. Some players wear shields on their skates for blocking shots. Half visors have become mandatory do to all the facial injuries as players got bigger and the game got faster. Some players lost careers do to eye injuries from sticks and pucks.

Think about this: they're hitting a half-pound disc of *hard* rubber, and it comes off their sticks at *high speed!* Over 100mph sometimes, faster than a Major League Baseball pitcher's fast-ball! So you have something that weighs twice as much as a baseball, going faster that an MLB fast-ball pitch! Dangerous! The only thing more dangerous is when somebody gets sliced by a skate-blade! Try watching Worst NHL Injuries ... *lots* of blood!

i like how you guys talk about how you'd take revenge and sorta imagine yourself in these situations. it'd be super interesting/entertaining to have you guys react to "The Code - The unwritten rules of fighting and retribution in ice hockey." some pretty wild shit how they decide who gets to punch on who, but it makes a lot of sense and is surprisingly respectful of the players.

It's a 3 inch by 1 inch solid frozen rubber puck. First rule of hockey is "keep your head up, son." The reason they don't fight after every hit is because they're men. Throw a dirty hit and you'll get taken care of, but generally clean hits are shrugged off as nothing but part of the game. Big, legal hits will sometimes get retaliation with a big hit or someone will step up and say "you don't do that to my teammate."

As long as they don’t use the head as first point of contact it’s legal. They will stop play if someone is injured. As far as fights: they’re technically not allowed but they fight anyway and take the time in the penalty box. And it’s AWESOME.

Pucks are made from hard vulcanized rubber. They are frozen solid before a game to cut down on bounce. In a slap shot a puck can travel more than 100mph. You don’t want to get hit by one.

The thing about hockey is if you hit somebody on the other team and the other team are like best friends with that guy that’s pretty much it you getting jumped by the whole other team even the people on who are benched. The benched guys will literally jump over the wall on the sidelines so your pretty much done if the whole other team jumps you.

4 months later but love the energy man😅 most this shit is legal hits.. coming from a lifelong hockey player its gotten a little softer so they watch injuries but anything below the head is mainly legal and most of the big hits on star player turn to teammates standing up for their teammate and making fights..huge reason why hockey is so great Edit: it ain't as cold as you think.. the concrete underneath the ice has cooling systems but the rink itself is colder
