Will an automatic card shuffler work on magic cards? + tests with sleeves -MTG

Considering the amounts of cheating that happens on Protours and other big events, if WOTC managed to fetch a Card Shuffler designed for double/triple sleeving, provided the shuffling machine and enforced its use, then cheating would become way harder to be achieved. We just need the correct machine for the task

I have a custom built shuffler than can take tripple sleeved cards it wasn't cheap but there is a reason any cash event they either ask to borrow or I have to go to the event and use the machine for the finals you will never see someone cheap at that point .

To be fair , this particular machine is cheap and nasty, but you could definitely imagine one that was a little bigger and more robust(and quieter!) being a good addition to competitive magic, would stop a lot of cheating and disputes.

IMO, they need a card shuffler with variable speed control, different methods of loading, better hopper shape to better accommodate Magic cards - sleeved, double sleeved, THEN it could work. People see this and say "No, no, never a good idea," but miss that with some modifications, a version of a card shuffler that works on Magic cards without utterly destroying them/risking that would just take some engineering.

If you’re here in 2023: We have this exact shuffler, and modified it by cutting off the front barriers with a Dremel to accommodate sleeved cards. Do about half your deck at a time for Commander and it works better if you trigger the pedal in small bursts. This not only enables them to go through smoothly, but you can also correct jams long before they damage anything. I have noticed no damage thus far.

Thank you, I was curious about this very thing but didn't even know where you would get a card shuffler! For the experiment you should have had half your cards in one colour of sleeve and half in a different colour so we could see visually the dispersion pattern between the two halves of the deck.

Dragon shields are known to have slight differences in the height coming from the factory; that's why some fit and some don't. The sizing of their sleeves is inconsistent, if only by a small amount.

I use a card shuffler for some decks like from the Game Night boxes. These decks are only ever used for introducing new players to the game so I kind of expect the cards to get damaged, and I can't sleeve those decks because then they don't fit in the box. If I'm trying to shuffle cards I care about, they'll be in sleeves anyway and I can mash shuffle them.

I had one of those, the reason it was jamming mostly it's because you're exceeding the maximum height and also the sleeves have a slight curve more so towards the pointed Edge. as the cards we're falling into place to be shuffled in the overstacked top was getting more crooked to go in a crooked manner. Overall card shuffler will work with single sleeve decks in KMC and Ultra Pro. the real problems you did not experience and I will describe them to you in my next post so everyone knows before they think about buying one.

Honestly. This looks like a very good choice for casual kitchen table magic. To shuffle your unsleeved cheap decks. Decks that the sleeves would probably worth more than the actual cards. And everyone knows how hard it is to shuffle unsleeved cards. This might actually be a pretty damn good option.

I got one of these at target awhile back. Used it to randomize commons, uncommons and bulk rares. Shuffled them all up then basically did some repack drafts with cards none of us either cared to have damaged or cards that just weren't of value in general.

For all of you worried about the cards getting "damaged" all that's happening with the machine is that it's using wheels to slide cards into the middle compartment. It's very unlikely that the cards can be damaged, so long as they aren't double sleeved.

Quiet Nerd the card shuffler seems to work alright, granted it sounds like a blender trying to blend something it shouldn't, but it doesn't seem to damage the cards at all, at least from what I see in the video, the only gripes I have with it is the fact that it doesn't work with certain card sleeves, the noise it makes XD, and the fact that the top cards always stay on the top, but other then that I didn't see any thing that would harm the cards in anyways and it seems to shuffle them o k just very very noisily and of course the whole top cards always being on top

Yeah, I've always wondered this as well. It looks like that's a very low-end poorly made shuffler though, a better shuffler might actually work. If there is one that did work with Sleeved magic cards, I still don't think it would be allowed in MTG competitve tournaments. I really think WotC needs to design their own automatic shuffler and have them at tournaments. It would prevent cheating and it would randomize better.

The 4 or 5 in a row of the same land type is actually a good thing. If it was island-forest-island-forest the whole way through, then it would not be truly random, and would not be considered legal for tournament play. Truly random shuffles have weird sequences.

This was a funny video... but on a serious note, even if this did work well with sleeved cards and had no chance of damaging them, it'd still be impractical. Since it's just a way to automate a standard riffle shuffle, you would have to do it at least seven times to fully randomize the deck.

If these were implemented into tournaments then I'd think a new size limit would be added. If this thing shuffles for you then you could have like a billion cards in one deck. Maybe the rule would be how many cards fit into the machine rather than the how many you can shuffle unassisted rule

Hi! Which sleeves do you recommend, then? I think I understood KMC, but I'm not sure. I suffered a stroke and now I can't shuffle by myself. I bought this thing but with ultra-pro sleeves the height of the sleeve is enough to not to work. The friction of the card shuffler with both bottom and top of the card (sleeve) avoids the shuffle.
