Well there's fighters that are happy with holding a guy down for 3 rounds to get the win at all cost (like Khabib). And then there's guys that would rather stand and bang while putting on a show (like Justin Gaethje) rather than just winning. Justin has 5 fights with 6 performances bonuses Khabib has 11 fights with 1 bonus. Its pretty obvious which one is more entertaining to the masses. Casual fans are not going to be entertained watching one man hump the other for 3 rounds. But they will go crazy watching a guy walk forward ignoring his own safety while looking to knock the other guys head off in a slug fest. That's just the truth of the matter.

Several reasons. 1: He's dominant. You can't argue with an 18-0 record. 2:He brings in a whole new audience. He was/is the undefeated welterweight champion of ONE just months ago. 3: It's the first trade of his this magnitude. DJ is arguably the greatest pound for pound fighter of all time. Probably top 5. 4: Joe Rogan.
@casus47815 жыл бұрын
1 You can argue with a 18-0 record if it did not include any top talent. 2 I don't think those who watch ONE but didn't watch UFC and will start watching it just because Askren is there is such a huge crowd for UFC numbers. 3 Who cares 4 Makes sense
@EsveePaulFedSlayer5 жыл бұрын
@@casus4781 Alec B In arguing against his unbeaten record, you mention it. Fact is, nobody has beaten him. Throw khabib in one, and would you expect any different? You could be right, but I think a significant portion might want to watch and see their champion face off against "superior" talent. I think it's unquestionable that the ufc has the most elite pro fighters, I don't dispute that, but I think it's unreasonable to think they have all of them. It's the first mma trade everbas far as I know. We can agree to disagree but I think it's a big deal. Depending on how it goes, it could change the employee/employer dynamic as well as how the organizations as a whole interact. Why did Ben Askren get a big cheer at his first live UFC attendance? here you go Chael: 1. Hardcore MMA fans who watch a lot of KZbin came across one of the greatest and unappreciated fighters early. It was impressive how far he got with such focus in a single area. Flawlessly implementing his plan. 2. JRE actually spoke about him a few years ago in multiple different podcasts wondering why his skill/unfortunate story isn't more recognised. 3. JRE spoke about him around a year ago, asking why people don't care about him again. 4. Hardcore fans that didn't run into him on their own but love JRE started to watch his KZbin highlights. 5. Word spread throughout hardcore MMA community. 6. JRE spoke to Ben Askren on JRE and went through his story of dominating opponents, teaching kids to wrestle, getting run around by Dana White and failing to secure a contract, and genuinely being positive and reasonable despite all his hardship. Less hardcore fans began to gain appreciation for Ben, eventually realising he was great. 7. Ben started to gain traction and his KZbin highlights got watched by more casual fans. He started being spoken about in more MMA circles. He began being a regular in UFC/MMA media and recognised for his Khabib like record, finding opponents "too easy" and being a "boring" fighter 8. The Ben Askren Band wagon started watching KZbin to verify that he was great, but less dynamic than other great fighters, and to the uninitiated, boring. All the previous aspects of the story (1-6) started to get covered by MMA media. 9. Ben is now a regular to MMA media, and all MMA fans began showing open enthusiasm for his good moral character demonstrated throughout his career. 10. He started showing up on TV and being displayed on more mainstream MMA media. Getting good timely exposure before being spotted in the UFC event on the night. He finally into the big league to compete where the hardcore fans always wanted to see him. 11. Fact: Hardcore fans attend live UFC events. These are the representatives that entered the picture from steps earlier than 1 to step 4. They cheered when they saw him on the screen, wanting to see a big test for Ben. All the other fans that jumped on the wagon also cheered because of his moral character, skill and composure. There is also a lack of reason to dislike Ben (preventing any booing or controversy). The MMA historians will look back at this answer and be happy to know a really detailed answer to Chaels question :)

I personally dont see what's boring about a guy taking another professionally trained fighter to the ground against his will, and beating him senseless, with the guy on the bottom unable to retaliate? Being able to impose that kind of dominance on another grown man (a trained, world class fighter at that) is absolutely fascinating. And to anyone who finds Askrens style "boring", why dont you go watch kick boxing instead? There's no wrestling in that (excluding small amounts of clinch work) that would be much more entertaining for you. Wrestling is a HUGE part of MMA, if you dont like that, there are many other forms of combat you can watch, with ONLY striking.

Brazilian Jujitsu and Striking is important, but it’s finally been confirmed by fighters like Khabib that wrestling is just as important. Uncle Chael is right on this one ☝️There are similarities between Maia and Askren , that’s definitely the fight they should have done. It would have been a much more interesting fight for the fans but no, what a terrible match making setting Ben vs Robbie it will be a one dimensional fight just as Maia vs anyone else out there..... So why not feed Maia with someone, who’s gonna grapple and give the show for the fans? Yeah , right ? but no! They keep giving him strikers or guys trying to keep their distance at all costs to avoid grapple with him. It’s gonna keep like that until him retires, then everybody will miss him and regret the fact we just didn’t had the chance to see him face another highlevel grappler such as Ben Askren just bc of this bs. Seems like the UFC match makers just wanna see Ben get knocked out or lose his debut, I mean there were better matchups we could have had , eg Covington, Usman, Nelson, even RDA would be nice Despite the fact Lawler is still a well ranked contender even with this long layoff he’s had, there’s nothing other than that, which makes sense for this matchup to be happening . Now the UFC under promoting some of their fighters is something relatively normal cuz that’s kinda their standard working operation and I understand due to the large amount of fighters they have. However throw their potential top contenders into burnouts is something even worse than this standard lol . I think they are really making the entertainment wrong, if they think about the fans for a sec they would do a much better job overall not only in terms of match making and stuff.
@edwrd19905 жыл бұрын
Yes, Joe Rogan gave Askren some good publicity but people actually went to look at his background and noticed how dominant he was. First and foremost is the fact that he gives Dana fits which makes him a fan favorite like the Diaz brothers.Second is his demeanor.

Khabib is a star with the same style. Its your character outside the ring that makes u a star!
@d.walltenaciousairguns72405 жыл бұрын
He's a star. He speaks well and is bold. He needs to step up now. Improve, get stronger and/or drop weight to 155 if at all possible. I know he cuts weight but he look soft to me. His mashing you pressing style may not be what he needs against this competition. He needs explosiveness as well.

as long as he wins i dont rly think it matters if his style is boring. he will sell tickets by just talking. now if he loses that will lose some of its shine, but if he keeps on winning ppl are gonna want to watch

I know one thing, Askren’s style would expose Khabib’s.

HORSE FUCKER stop it. Khabib is a way better wrestler and grappler and he’s a better hitter
@gunsnwheels92145 жыл бұрын
HORSE FUCKER you can't expose someone who is just legitimately good at what they do. Askren didn't look good cutting to 170, he has fought at middleweight my dude, he's huge. He would be Khabib because Khabib is too small for someone like that anyway. So you're right that Askren would win, but not for the reason you're thinking. Khabib would be at a severe disadvantage.
@tacotacotington36385 жыл бұрын
Guns n Wheels lol? Khabib is the same height as Tyron Woodley and walks around at the same weight. Khabib has missed weight 4 times at LW while neither Ben nor Tyron have ever missed weight. They fight in their real weight classes. Not like khabib who has to either go into organ failure or the beginning stages of it just to make the weight and have an insane advantage on fight night. Khabib has blatantly said he will never fight at 170, he knows Tyron could literally pick him up and throw him out of the octagon or knock him out in one punch.
@ismas26335 жыл бұрын
@@tacotacotington3638 NO ONE fights in their real weight class. Tyron is wider bigger and have more muscle than khabib. Maybe they walk at the same weight but its because khabib have a higher body fat percentage than woodley

When i heard of ben askren, i thought "thank god this guy is out of ufc", because i presume that would be a boring fight like demian maya, khabib when he started, etc. Buuut, in the end, it all goes around the personality, not the style. Today, i love khabib, his respectfull way, his relationship with his father and teammates. Its the same with ben askren, you cannot avoid to like the guy. The way he talked about that kamaru usman bullshit, that was gold.

Ben got big... he got popular... soon as he went to UFC. He’s a likable guy, he talks shit, and backs it up. The average fight fan knows UFC, they buy the PPVs ... but they’re not typically deeply involved to follow fighters of other organizations... they have their few couple fav popular UFC guys/gals... and that’s it. So now that these type of people are seeing Ben... he’s gained tens of thousands of fans overnight !

Ben Askren has the “It” , he’s the average joe with some freakin personality and some IQ. That’s rejuvenating In the ufc. I will be there tomorrow to watch him fight over the likes of Jon Jones and t-woodley.... you can’t quantify that, and I am a die hart fan of ufc !!!!!
